Quite surprising how 'low' the UK total is and how high the French one.

Truly horrifying seeing that.
I've been reading a lot about the Cold War and whilst I had heard about many of the code names given to these weapons but the most worrying was one built by the UK called 'Violet Sun'. It would have destroyed or irradiated 10km! A true city destroyer!
The weapon was designed to be to most destructive weapon created by the UK but were wisely dismantled before they were tested. If the US or Soviets had discovered the existence of the weapon perhaps the Cold War would have much nastier!
Thankfully we never had to live through the results of a nuclear war.

Nevada is the area where a lot of the testing took place, just outside Las Vegas. I went to see the area where they viewed the test and saw some of the craters, this was at Mount Charleston I was told that a lot of the fall out landed in Utah. Apparently this state has the highest cancer figures in the entire USA, the viewing area was chosen because the wind was always off the mountains so the fallout never got near the visiters

Scary stuff to say the least ! What a way to treat our planet.
More scary I suppose are the current bunch of nutters who want a nuclear bomb and a party ticket to Mayhem

Trinity and beyond is a documentry of many of the nuclear bomb tests of the past.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114728/

One can only hope that it remains part of the past despite many nations efforts to become "nuclear powers".

And the engines that were to power the delivery rockets were tested within viewing distance of the main Newcastle - Carlisle road (the Roman "Military Road) at Spadeadam. I remember the noise produced by the "Blue Streak" missile engine....deafening from 2 miles away. BY.

Bryan, I was at primary school in Brampton in the 60s, and classes stopped to hear the noise when engines were being tested.

It's about eight miles away.

Exocet
V1
V2
Sidewinder
Bloodhound
Rapier
Stinger
Trident
(Sea)Cat
(Sea)Dart
... they all have a fast, sharp, scary, missily feel to them.

(Sea)Slug
... none of the above.
What were they thinking?

Woomera....just don't go there as the Giga counter dial still goes bananas <*< ....& that's after some 50 years.....although I think the Brits made a scientific experiment of it
1/2 of the bystanders were told to watch the flash.........they suffered premature blindness followed by premature death  :o
1/2 of the bystanders were told to face 180 degrees from the flash.......they suffered premature baldness followed by premature death  O0
.......and then in 1972 when some of GAZOU's mates tried to alter the geographic foot print of a small island in the Pacific >>:-( .....
So a few questions for Brian56
1. who won the packet of peanuts?
2. what flavour were they?............Derek  {-)

O0  you are 100% correct vnk.........but its like me stating in my profile that I live in Wollongong >:-o .......when I actually live in Corrimal....which is just 8 km north... :o
...... :}  just for our world membership base to understand....the general location............like
1/1,000 of the world population may have heard of Wollongong.......but 1/100,000,000 of the same people would have heard of Corrimal  {-) ......Derek

Thats it Maralinga

Bit of a senior moment with HMS Malabar which was the RN base in Bermuda  :embarrassed: :embarrassed: :embarrassed: .

Wasn't Woomera the rocket range and Maralinga the nuclear test site?.

Yep, Maralinga's 500 miles West of Woomera, where the "scientists" and support staff lived and worked.
The rocket launch sites are just out of town, to the west, and the ranges run NW from there.
cheers
vnkiwi  :embarrassed:

As vnk says......."Yep, Maralinga's 500 miles West of Woomera" ....but in OZ that distance is only a hop...step & a jump on a Sunday afternoon drive......  {-)  Derek

A cautionary note to members:

For any of you who are both nuclear engineers AND model boat enthusiasts, it is strictly prohibited to test a 10 Kiloton device (1 Megaton at 1/96 scale) at Wicksteed 2014 to ascertain the effects on similar scale warships on the lake.

I assure you Martin WILL notice.

Company I once worked for who made specialised clamps, were asked to quote for a clamp to hold on the fibreglass dome of a portable missile tracking unit.  Part of the spec was that it had to be able to survive the blast from a 10K ton explosion.  O0

Nice to see our neighbours across the pond like to irradiate everything in the process of finding better yeilds and systems, over 1000 tests! I know maybe not all tests are for the destruction power that they can produce but still, a lot of activity.
