Hi all,
Im currently digging out a load of grout between some times in an effort to re-grout the lot. However digging it out seems to be taking an age by hand. I then had a look in my dremel box and found a few of the smaller grinding stones and set to work on the grout. It went through it like a hot knife through butter.
The issue is, I can't find a lot of these type of things for 'cheap'. I will probably need about 20-30 of these to do the entire area.

Any suggestions?
PS, i know theres a grout removal bit, however i refuse to pay some £15 for it when it will last 5 seconds..

Get a router bit it will do the same job and last a lieftime had some for years and they do a better job far quicker and cheaper

What sort of bit? just a straight thing, say 4mm dia?

Round conical parralel they will ALL do the same job Personally I would use a round one

Thise are what you want especially the round one gets in everywhere all of those are very handy for various modleing jobs these are what I have got

Go and see your local dentist and ask if he has or will he save you some of his blunt drills.I use them all the time.
they may be blunt to him but certainly not for modelling usage!

I have tried the high speed cutters. again lasted about 10 seconds before the damn thing had worn away.

Pop down to Boyes
They have cheap sets.

Dan Have You tryed an Angle grinder or one of them 50mm TC Blades saws or one of them tools where the head vibrates at high speed from side to side forgot there right name can cut though brick but not your skin.

Looked in my local Ned, nothing in there at all. Will check the one in Billingham on Monday when im through that way.

Dremel sell a bit purpose for the job it comes with a guard that is adjustable for depth and is the width of a grout line .The guard is held at the base a it like a router. I have used one on a lot of hotel bathroom refurbs. Just get some one to hold a vacuum cleaner near to the bit to stop the dust.

Yeah ive seen it, however realistically how long does the bit last? its £15 for a grout removal bit in the local homebase, it looks no more 'hardy' than the circular cutting bits i have in my dremel box.
Ive tried a few things and found the grinding stones to be the best.

dan that aldi tool someone just posted is one of the things am on about i have the botch one which may be a bit better but think this may do the job

I have used mine on 17 fully tiled bathrooms in the hotel and it is still good. That is if we are talking about the same thing. It should look parallel with about 20mm of cutting surface guard being about 2inch dia.

I can recall buying a set of diamond coated bits at maplins for only about a fiver (they can also be found on the cheap tool stalls in markets.

Im sure Dremel make a Grouter remover that attaches to the main unit.

Or........... if the grout is just badly discoloured try painting it with neat thick bleach and leaving for a couple of hours, repeating if needed, use a 1/2 in paint brush, cheap one, works for me with little effort. Also if you accidentally remove the glaze on the tile when removing the grout mechanically then that area will also get grubby quite quickly as it is porous and not as resilient as the grout to stains etc..
