Title: upscaling a smit rotterdam
Post by: bigford on June 18, 2007, 04:16:07 AM
hey guys i want to get a 1/75 scale smit rott and use it as a template to upscale
to 1/50.   i'm guessing if i took all the hull parts and inlarge them on a photo copyer
that would work???

bigford,
The theory is fine but some coppiers arent as accurate as you think.
For anything being rescaled, draw or place a coloured square in a corner, when the copy comes out  check that this is still square and the correct size.

Hiya,
if you want a 1:50 Rotterdam hull go to this Dutch site,

      http://users.skynet.be/florisjan/smb/page/E/slepers.html

      they have them.

Keith.

You could end up with a metre ruler all marked with new sizes.  This would cover all the dimensions as you measure them.

I've just re read that and it sounds confusing, but I'm sure you know what I'm getting at.  Make a new false ruler.

Hope this helps

I have the original Rotterdam still waiting in it's box and am a bit apprehensive about doing it in the original size, so I admire your pluck.  ;D

Cheers...Ken

i spoke to ray at p.m. hanson  in canada
and told him of my problem.. he put (ken billings himself) on the
phone to help fix the problem.  Ken is a very nice gentleman from
denmark who figured i was missing 5 sheets of wood
from the ship. Ken  said they would check in canada for the parts or
ship them to me from europe  great boat great company

well after 6 months i got off my butt and went to staples and had them
enlarge my frames  :D 150% is huge. $30.00 for double coppies  >>:-(
i figured that  the boat would need extra frames due to the new lenth
going from 35'' to 52.50''  :D

billings did not give me enough planks to skin a 1/50 ship and none of the hobby shops
have the right size planks so i went with 3'' sheets, this works so much better ;D O0

strange thing happened yesterday :o i went to staples to enlarge some
parts, well  :o i told the girl to enlarge the parts 150% and she did.
well it looked like she made the parts 350%  :o :o  now i know for the
hull and first deck i copyed everything at 150%  but now i'm wondering
if i made a mistake with my math or did the staples girl just mess up real bad!!!

My son used to work for Staples so it's a fair bet they messed up.
Yours does look 50% bigger than original or the original looks 2/3 the size of the new one, so I would think you are probably OK. O0

O0 Great work so far. Looking forwards to seing the finnished project.

Have often wondered why Billings did the Rotterdam at 1:75 and the Nederland at 1:33  ???

Just picture the pair of them together at 1:33 scale......

The missus will never go for it! >>:-(
