Title: how will I get all this to work!!
Post by: baz on December 06, 2013, 12:48:27 am
Hi all,
hoping some of the experts on here can help. I am building a large trawler at the moment and need some advice about the electrics. I have a converted servo to shoot and haul the doors and another servo to shoot and haul the nets. The problem is it also has a bow thruster which only leaves 1 spare channel on the sticks. I also plan to have a couple of P43 switching units to control the deck and navigation lights which I think would take care of a couple of the switching channels. Is there a way to make the other switching channels make the servo go in both ways. I got a Turnigy 9ch Tx last time home but havent had a chance to play about with it yet. Haven't attempted anything this complicated before so any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
          Baz.

If the channel switch on the transmitter is just two-position then that's all you will get from a servo on that channel i.e. fully one way or the other, Having said that, it sounds as if that might do the job.
You might alternatively consider using a P44 twinswitch on the spare proportional channel. That will allow you to operate both lighting circuits from the one channel.

Cheers for that DM, I'll have a play about with the TX and the servos when I get home and see what happens, might have to sacrifice the bow thruster to get the servos working off the sticks, we'll see how it goes!!

You could consider using microswitches on the the rudder linkage to switch the bow thruster at full throw

HobbyKing do a multi switch that I purchased for switching my lights and so on, you might try looking at that.  Not very expensive either, and offers different modes of switching :-)

I agree with captain flack they are very good switching units .but if new to setting up multi channel operations then you could contact the chap at mrrcworld who you will find to be very happy to help you find the right switcher units for the job you want it to do .I have used him in the past and been very happy with service i received

The instructions are on the HK advert under I think "file"  It's not that complicated to operate once you select the mode you want.

Here is the complete YouTube film about the switch.

It runs for 28 minutes and I found it the most interesting film I've ever seen describing the features of  'Switching'    :-)) :-)) :-))

Excellent video, it is really a versatile switch only limited by ones imagination, 10 out of 10.

Even I could understand it  {-) {-) :-)) :-)) :-))

I've just placed an order for this. UK outof stock so tried the european warehouse which showed 7 in stock. £6.84 very very reasonable- however there is always a catch isn't there  >:-o Its being posted from Holland not too far away is it? The final price came out at a few pence under £16 :o :o when the p and p was added.

We live and learn! its just one of those sites that don't show or add p&p until you have committed to pay. I'll use the UK site in future as it seems to offer some decent kit.

Well I received this neat little bit of kit yesterday- no instructions on how to wire it up at all, just the electronic module in a small plastic bag! Good job I'm not too much of a numpty and will be able to work out what does what.

For now its confined to my 'box of bits' that I have been collecting for my AHS rebuild, at the moment all time is going into my sailing smack.

Come on then Hullygully
Where's the photos of the smack?
I refitted the one in the National Fishing Heritage Museum
I even got my daughter to anti foul it with me before
it was put in its wet dock.
I would like to do a model of a smack to sail .

Unfortunately Ned its in my home in  Spain and we are still in Hull, not gone back yet! We return on the 22nd of the month so I'll take a pic or two and post them in yachts and sail. Its only the hull at the moment, I spent 7 weeks planking it up to deck level.  For now here's a pic of it before planking 1 4/8th scale, oak keel, ply ribs and oak planking.

If you want further details get a hold of two books Holmes of the Humber and Sailing trawlers, both very good and with line drawings!

The instructions for programming it are contained within the HK advert at the very bottom of the page.  If you open the file then all the different applications are there. :-)

Thanks cap'n I'll go back to the site and take a look. What I was dissapointed with on receiving it is the ad shows a bunch of fly leads alongside the unit. These are not supplied with it yet the unit itself has the male part of the plugs attached, so now I have to buy a set of leads or solder direct to the pins on the board.

Brian 56....... as you know I have very little electrical knowledge .... :o....but would suggest you seek alternate advice prior to soldering to the micro male pins on the board..........Derek

As the unit is going to be permanently in situ and going to be potted in resin (haven't made my mind up yet) soldering to the pin outs is ok, either that or I will de-solder from the board and and solder my connections direct to it. I like nothing better than to stick a hot soldering iron into electroniky stuff and see if it works afterwards.

If the advertising picture showed it with wires and there was nothing to say "wires just shown as an example of what you will need" and no link to the wires, yes, it was remiss of them to not send them.
If soldering, heatshrink is highly recommended.  Do the outputs just give changes of logic level, or can they work stuff direct?
Title: Re: how will I get all this to work!!
Post by: Brian60 on January 06, 2014, 09:24:47 pm
They drive low amperage low voltage devices ie led's. For items drawing more current they suggest using the output to trigger a a relay.

And wonder of wonders I do have the leads. My wife gave them to me earlier today. It seems in my eagerness to rip open the packaging and discard it after removing the electronics for inspection, I had left the leads in the bottom of the padded packet  %% %%

It was only when I mentioned the fact to her today that she pointed out she had 'rescued' them and put them in a safe place- just waiting for me to moan about 'missing parts' She does things like that %)

No, I meant shrink down tube to hide the joins after the event.  I usually found that a heat sink would do more harm than good in a tight space.  All a bit moot now that the excess packaging has been rediscovered.
