Title: Icebreaking
Post by: hama on December 08, 2013, 07:56:33 pm
Took my Seaport tug out to break some ice today, worked great. My 6v batteriy that I normally use in this boat was dead so I took a 12v Nimh instead. Turned out that the extra power came in handy. Please listen to the sound, in slo-mo my geared graupner motor sounds just like a diesel revving to cope with the ice.
Hope you enjoy!

The first Video the sound was impressively realistic, I guess filmed at 60 FPS and slowed down?

I like the waves under the Ice as the tug comes towards the camera in the second video.

I'm more than glad we don't get Ice here  ;)

Hello everybody, and thank´s for your interest!
Never meassured the ice but I guess 2-3mm.
The engine sound was a nice surprise when I first looked at the edited video. They are slowed down on the Youtube editor, looks more realistic ( and sounds! ).
No paint at all is lost, and no damage what so ever to the plastic prop. She had som ice hanging from the bowfender though, very realistic.
It was very funny and will try it again. It is on some rare occations when the ice is just the right thickness for our boats.
Here´s another video with that enginesound, in the very beginning you can hear the "engine" barely ticking over.

Hello!
Some more icebreaking. This time the ice was a bit thicker and I used the 6v battery thats normaly used, instead of the 12v pack I used the last time. Also tried two different propellers, the smaller one worked better as the ice got stuck in the kort with the bigger one. You might notice that I´ve rebuilt the boat a bit.
Hope you enoy!

Hi, The thickest ice breaking I did with my "Axel" icebreaking tug was 1/2" to 5/8" on Tynemouth lake midwinter. Nemesis

Thats impressive Nemesis, perhaps there will be other videos and Pictures here? Please feel free to contribute to this thread.
Myself, I did some more icebreaking today. Couldnt resist when I saw the ice, it had been snowing a lot and it was a lot warmer resulting in a thick soft ice that looked very scale like.
So please excuse me, but here are some more videos.
All the best!
