Title: Coir Matting
Post by: BarryM on December 17, 2013, 09:01:55 pm
Can anyone suggest a source of 1/16 scale material to simulate coir matting as used in door mats? There are plenty of mats available for dolls houses but I want plain material and not something inscribed with 'Welcome' or 'Now wipe your paws'.
All helpful suggestions welcome.

Model Railway scenic matting.  It's usually a paper backed "furry" sheet used to simulate grass.  Check out "Gaugemaster".

Len,
I see where you are coming from but at scale a coir mat would be about 1/16" thick.  Slicing a carpet tile down to that thickness would create problems. I'm experimenting with some thin leather from a book binding which has a roughish back or some baize dyed brown might be a possibility.

I was looking at railway scenery grass today and marked it down as a possibility.  Gazou's suggestion of scratched leather echoes my experiments with soft leather and a wire brush which also has the advantage dear to my heart of being the  no-cost option. Sandpaper and felt? - Hmmm, possible.
The local Hobbycraft advertises some dolls house carpeting which looks interesting.
Thanks to all who have replied. I'll post a pic of what I finally come up with.

Barry M

Hi,
Sat at the bar in the club I go to I noticed one of the new types of bar towels, the ones with rubber backs, advertising Becks bottled beer.
There were a lot of places on this with a brown background, if cut to size may be of use to you.

I have looked at umpteen Dolls House sites without success but the first one on your list looks promising. The wrong colour but capable of modification by the look of it. I will check it out.
Thank you,

I have some MDF Powdered sawdust ........... It's quite fine. Maybe stuck onto some fine plasticard with white glue and painted ???? I used it on a 12th scale Lambourghini I made a while back for a carpet effect.... It came out really well........ If you want to give it a go I can put some in a Ziploc bag and post it to you ........... If you want some PM me with your address.

Peter,
Thanks for your offer but I have settled for some thin leather from a book binding which had a naturally hairy reverse. A bit of brown dye and it looks the part.
