Title: My Tsekoa build - progress report!
Post by: Voyager on June 22, 2007, 06:17:48 pm
Some nine months have passed since i last worked on my tsekoa, but three solid weeks of work and some minor heart failure and she looks like this:

The front crest on the plaque is photo etched, the deck lights all work, the rear flood light also works (anothers being built soon)

Topic name changed.... Admin.

Looks good! Mine sits on the shelf waiting for me to get at it again as well. I like those small light housings - what did you make those from? Keep us informed as you go.

Hi mike,

The working lights are all made from scratch, these are built from plasticard pieces for the base sections, while the cages for the lights are from fine brass lengths drilled and bent into shape. The first one or two i tried to build went a little wrong, but once i got the hang of it i went a tad mad and made twenty :P

Managed to get some more done on the Tsekoa II of late. The crane is slowly taking shape, the new additions are: Super detailed up the two roof search lights, exit sign on door, dingy crane built and fitted, started work on the dingy, started painting the Atlas crane,  scratch built the Atlas locking base.

Thanks very much for the comments!!! Everything was primered first with Halfords acrylic spray paints, the white is from the Tamiya acrylic spray can range, crane, dingy, again Halfords, everything thing else was from the Humbrol range and was airbrushed on. The varnish is Ronseals Ultra Tough Satin Coat from B&Q, this was thinned with thinners and airbrushed on, it's brilliant stuff with just the right amount of satin shine, it's also waterproof (that being the most important bit ;)) and scratch proof.

Took another one of the detailed search lights.

I shall keep posting pictures as i go along....

just been scratch building a front anchor winch. Rivets are hex shape strips of plasti-card cut to a rough length, glued on with super glue and then filed down to all the right height. The generator was something i picked up at Dortmund.

Having trouble finding the correct size drums for the ends, does anyone have any ideas as to where i might be able to obtain two?

You can mount some dowling rod in a chuck and spin it up with some coarse sandpaper, until you get the right profile. Fill sand and prime until you have it right.

So far this what the front winch looks like, still some more parts to build and add on. The dinghy is coming along, more parts yet to be built and added, could be another week before that's complete. The spare anchor and fixing mounts are done and fitted. Realised tonight that i forgot to added a drain pipe to the top deck, not sure now that i have the room to fit one where it's suppose to go :embarrassed: Some serious pondering to follow i think!!!

Two graupner 6v smoke units ordered today, once they arrive i shall go about fitting them inside the superstructure.

Voyager, it just keeps getting better - fantastic work  O0 O0. I was thinking of buying a Tsekoa kit myself, when we are in the UK next year, but you have set a very high standard, and I don't know if I could match it. Nevertheless, I will be able to use your photos as inspiration.
I look forward to more photos.

Hi Wayne,
Yes, I have seen the red option and it appeals to me. I was thinking of buying the kit when we go to the UK next year. I will try to go to Model Slipway's factory and meet Lawrie and Jackie White, as I have dealt with them before and found them to be very helpful. I bought the kit for Sentinel from them, and was very happy with the build and the performance of the finished model. Unfortunately, it is very expensive to buy large kits in the UK and have them posted to Australia, as freight and import duty adds enormously to the price. However, as we will be in the UK, we could bring one back with us as accompanied luggage, and as we would be under the allowable limit for dutiable goods, would not have to pay any duty. We are also eligible for a VAT rebate. All this depends on approval by domestic authority (my wife) of course.  I have been dropping subtle hints, and the early signs are good. O0
I am attaching a couple of photos of my Sentinel, which had its maiden voyage in August 2005. It spent several months on display in the local maritime museum earlier this year, before returning to active service. :)
Peter.

Wow....What a boat :o You've done a fine job there Peter i must say. I haven't seen one of these kits in the flesh for a while, from what i can remember it handled very well, no doubt due to the stabilisers. I have to say i prefer The Model Slipway kits to other makes, I too like the service i get from Laurie & Jackie (It's good to know that help is just a phone call away should things go wrong, as they often do with me! :embarrassed:) I'm rather tempted to buy the new multi-purpose tug from Laurie, need to finish off my current build first though, not to mention replenish my rather worn out wallet :'(
Depending on when your over next year, but it might be worth checking to see if any of our shows are on at the time of your visit, there's normally something going on throughout the year. I'll send you some pic's from one of our shows last year at Black Park.

Not done very much lately, sanded down the primer on the lower hull for it's final coat of Humbrol.  I have started work cleaning the many cast metal fittings, some are now painted and awaiting completion of the hull.  Radar units are built with transfers applied, fire buckets are built-painted and transfers applied. I decided on applying the odd spot of rust in places, hard to spot it unless your up close (less is more as they often say!)

Quite a number of things to tidy up, paint touch up's, some hand rails slightly too long which require my attention, sometimes feel like i'm never going to get it finished :P

last one for now until i've done more worth showing!
Title: Re: At last an update on the Tsekoa
Post by: Voyager on September 12, 2007, 10:50:52 pm
Had some mixed results sinse i lasted updated you all :'( Nothing that can't be fixed may i add, but lets just say i had some rather bad results on the lower hull using Humbrol Satin varnish (mixed and put through an airbrush). Put simply the varnish went on OK, also looked fine when it was all dry!? But the stuff remained sticky :'( It was my own fault as i used Ronseal up untill this point, except when i opened the tin i found that the dreaded air had got to it and so was rock solid. Not to worry i thought, I'll give old Humbrol a try >:( Anyway, It just needs rubbing down and respraying and sealing with the proper Ronseal.
The mooring oval thingy's....sorry but it is quite a late posting! Anyway, they have now been built and added to the hull. The deck has been given it's final coat of brown, and the same final coat of blue for the inner hull sides, all now sealed with good old Ronseal O0 I decided to add a spot of rust to the base of the Atlas, I kept this realistic and subtle....that's all the weathering i shall be doing on this boat.
Title: Re: At last an update on the Tsekoa
Post by: Voyager on October 01, 2007, 12:41:20 am
Been hard at it lately (no jokes please ;D) I had to sand down the outer hull and repaint it again, this time i sealed in everything with Ronseal (should have done this the first time around ::)) The Prop-Shop props have been fitted now, along with numerous painted metal deck fittings like ventilators etc. The superstructure has now been satin varnished.
I was curious as the boat is starting to get quite heavy, but i needn't have worried as i tested her in the bath with plenty of weight to go! I would say that i'm almost through building her, not counting the electronic side of things i'd say she's about 93% done! I'm in the process of building the rear crane control platform, crane steps, pipework and other crane white metal parts. Once this is done i have some cleaning of the inner wheelhouse as everythings gone rather dusty looking! The glazing next once the inner wheelhouse has been sorted. Second to last on the list is the mast lights and navigation light, then finaly the kit supplied transfers.

I can almost see the finish line.....

A couple of pictures under early construction:

Hi  Voyager . looking good , I like the fire buckets . if only I could paint instead of daub.anyway where did you get the deck plating and what size/scale is it.. Peter
Title: Re: At last an update on the Tsekoa
Post by: Voyager on October 01, 2007, 01:26:37 am
Thanks HS93 ;D

The fire buckets came with the kit, all i did was make up some brass handles and fill the inside with epoxy resin and paint them up. The deck plating was purchased from the Squires Catalogue, It comes in a sheet of roughly A4 with different size raised domes (only two sizes used and the rest was thrown, aprox 200 tiles glued down to cover the deck). The boat is 1:32 scale, it's aprox 65% kit and the rest is all scratch built.

Post by: Voyager on October 01, 2007, 01:31:16 am
...Oh, the letters to make up the Fire transfer came from the London Graphic Centre, then i sprayed a high gloss varnish from the Halfords spray range to seal them in.

For the electronics and running gear:

2x Monoperm motors.
2x Double couplings.
2x Prop-Shop props.
1x Graupner bow thruster.
2x 6v Graupner smoke units.
Complete working navigation and deck lights.
2x Working radar units.

Yet to buy:

1x 6v 4 amp power lead acid.
3x M-tronic speed controllers (not decided what models as yet)
4 ch+ Radio set.

Voyager,
Keep an eye on the motors when running her.
The Monoperm Supers are good little motors (about 5000 rpm) but some dont like the load that brass props put on them.
Some are fine, some get hot, just check them in the bath.

Thanks Bob ;) What gear ratio do you think would be best? I'm only after scale speed and would prefer to have more torque so the motors don't over heat.

For the past two days i've been working on the crane control platform. I'm fairly happy with it now it's had some paint, still need to paint the control levers and ladder steps. I might add a tool box to the floor of the control box next :-\ Either that or some kind of fuse box, I just know it needs something? Also been working on the steps, textured foot plates added and all primed ready for painting later tonight.

Step now painted and in place! The neumatic cables have been made and fitted, I wasn't looking forward to that bit, kinda been putting it off :embarrassed: It wasn't as bad as i thought it would be :) Had one of those days we all get from time to time, you know when everything goes belly up >:( Spilt glue on a part i was working on and to top it i glued my fingers to the bottle!!!

Anyway, this is what i did just before i packed it in for the day!

I decided to work on the crane again last night, I wasn't completely happy with the crane as it wasn't quite real enough :-\ I done further searches on the net and found some reference picture to aid my weathering. I mixed up some Winton Oils and gave the crane a wash of Paynes Grey, I picked out the areas where the dirt would gather and wiped any excess off with a cotton bud when dry. The last thing to add was paint chips, random paint shipping was applied all over but further extensive chipping was applied the hook end as this was an area that suffers the most. I'm very happy with how the crane looks now, just need to finish it off with a couple of metal parts, brass pieces for the cables to attached onto, then the cables to fit, last of all some metal looking sticky back plastic for the larger pneumatic piston....and then that section apart from transfers will be complete!
I also applied some light weathering to the engine stacks, light fading to represent smoke around the vents, again a few chips to bring to life, again I'm happy with that now so no further weathering will be applied there. I've now moved onto the main superstructure, weathering here will be quite subtle, scratches will be applied here and there, mostly around the door and door frame and that's about it. Next on the list will be some light shading with the airbrush on the deck area coupled with a few paint chips, the hardest part of weathering is knowing when to stop :-\ If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations then don't be frightened to voice them!

Life rings now painted and fitted, paint chips added to superstructure. I'll do some more later tonight if i get a chance?

Name plates now painted and fitted to hull, some areas require some touching up with black and a satin coat has yet to be applied. Some of the aerial units have now been painted and fitted, I added a blob of devcon to the ends to make them stand out and painted them bright orange to stop myself being poked in the eye! I have started painting the side rails in white, it will need at least three coats and each one being thinned down with thinners. The deck and hull has been lightly weathered with various thinned down dark greys through an airbrush , but being quite faint it doesn't show up with the flash on my camera that well, I'll wait until the weather improves and take some outside.

Found something that should get my windows filled in, It's called solid water, It sets solid and crystal clear O0 The second thing i purchased was a copper strip with an adhesive reverse side, I plan on using this to connect my lights and also form a connection with the superstructure, this should eliminate the need for connectors. Done a little tonight, mainly the cables for the spot lights and radar units.

The past couple of evenings I've been working on the inflatable to try and get it all finished, I'm pleased to report it's now been finished and ready to be glued to the Tsekoa II. Some modifications have been made but not many as it's a really nice kit as it is! I added the textured front black cover, made a handle for the motor, added a strip so as the side ropes have something to go into, the side ropes by the way are made out of fine copper wire and not cotton. The paddle was made from a cocktail stick and plasticard, the straps are made from black electrical tape, reflective tape was applied in places but the rest of the detail was simply painted on.
I'm now working on the aerials for the mast, next step will be cleaning up the thick layer of dust from the interior, may well make a few changes as yet :-\

Had some mixed results with Crystal Water resin for the portholes, the ones on the hull went ok but the most important one on the superstructure went badly wrong  :'( I now need to drill out the resin and try again lol
Real sand added to fire buckets, glazing finished on the wheelhouse, wipers now fitted, mast light cases fitted (still requires the correct LED's to be fitted, still abit stuck on that one?) window divider added to superstructure side windows using metal adhesive tape, gone around and touched up some area's I wasn't completely happy with, side silicone fenders fitted (25mm fitted, although I'm not sure if I should have gone with the 31mm instead?)

and besides, that maple leaf looks rather shabby ( is it a supplied decal or what ), that coming from a true canuck as well O0.
Carry on with the build though, will post some updates of RTTL Vosper in a day or so when I attach the mast.

It's not a decal but a printed styrene plastic Mapel Leaf. Currently awaiting a better version on it's way from Darren in Canada  ;)

I decided the boat was in need of further weathering down, didn't want it to look as though it's just left the shipyard, but instead look as though it's had a few years at sea. That's the last of the weathering for me as I feel any more would spoil her, less is more as they say!

New additions would be the GPS Dome, weathering of rust on handrails and hull and rear work deck area, three crew figures added.

Very impressive. Just the ticket, as they say.

Well done

Thanks for that Ken!

Been busy changing a few things, adding things etc. The the buoys have found their positioning on the deck (Navigation buoy still requires weathering on the top ring, electronics, and then it's complete), concrete blocks were made out of the usual plasticard, chains were added, a container was built up and added to make the rear deck look a little busy, vinyl safety signs were purchased off ebay, oil drops were added on the rear superstructure to simulate leaking fluid, life rings stripped and repainted as I made a poor job of painting them in the first place (not pictured), CCTV camera was made up from plasticard-waiting for the paint to dry then It'll be fitted.

*A big thank you to Darren in Canada for producing some excellent transfers  O0*

Cheers Darren  O0

I've not applied any transfers to the boat as yet, only tested one of the maples on an already sprayed piece of plasticard and it looked fantastic!!! I'll be applying the transfers last as I don't want to scratch any while I'm still changing things on the boat, still unhappy with a few things I've done which could have been done better had I taken my time and thought it through  ::)

CCTV camera fitted tonight

Liferings now repainted with added reflective strip
