While getting my TV book yesterday, I saw in the rack a Publication for a 1/48th scale model of the Sub featured in the film "Das Boot" Display model, 1,4 metres Long, Frames from MDF, planked hull, internal Detail. In the first Edition , for a Pound, was also a nice etched brass foredeck, good for a Diorama or similar, have you got it in UK ? If it is still there tomorrow will buy it so you can see for yourselves.

Mdf frames? In a boat is bad enough but a sub? Can really be only fir display I would have thought

Just had a nose around. It's u96 das boot. and is not on the UK Hachette site that I can see nut is on the German site!

many ,,many years ago I built a model sub out of a kit just like them u boats ,took me about 2 months ,then I finds out ,in the records of my fathers sea going,s he was on a ship that was torped ,that model was given to a friend .wanted no one to know what I had done if my father had been alive he would have been very annoyed.

It has a removable side Panel and full internal Detail.

I have the revell cutaway model, its a seriously nice model for little money. A big model for less than 20 quid including postage can't be bad in anyones book!

According to the web page there are 150 issues to complete.
Issue 1 at 1 Euro
Issue 2 at 3.99 Euros
148 episodes at 6.99 Euros
So total is 1039.51 Euro's. Looks great but not cheap is it. At least you have nearly 3 years to pay for it. %)

Have you seen the pirate ship on the UK site at the moment?
Pirates of the Caribbean one completed in 120 episodes. Just done the sums and it's about £700 in total and 120 weeks to complete. They do charge you £5.99 for each additional ring binder as they are needed too so not sure how many of them you need.
Does look good though, Kind of tempting as it has just started so you can still get all the parts.

It all really depends on the articles in the magazines... The HMS victory one they did a while back had some very good articles which I do think add value to the product.
It's still more expensive than buying a couple of good books and a complete kit but look at it this way 5.99 won't even buy 2 pints in my local or a pack of smokes

Its a bit 'marmite; really you build bit by bit and never face a huge box of bits, on the other hand you build bit by bit and can never do other sections when you get bored with the bit you are doing.

I have to say I'm a bit of a part works fan, I have completed several over the years.
Leaky, I usually hold on for a few months before starting so I can cop n change the bits I do. For example on the victory I jumped ahead and built the ships boats first.
At this moment I think Im on issue 25 but I have all 150 parts and have done some of the smaller parts of later issues like canons etc

Have to admit they are a good way to spread the costs. Forking out £700 for a pirate ship in one go would be difficult for me right now but spread the cost over 2 years, not really a problem.
Probably wouldn't get the chance to build much through the summer as well so could save all the bits up and assemble more in the winter.

I am tempted but do I go for the pirate ship or wait and see if the type VII sub comes to this country. I do already have a revell Type VII with interior and I do have the Robbe type VII which need finishing so probably got enough subs to be honest!

1st issue of U-96 is in the shops (WHSmiths at least)
