Title: What's your favorite or most useful tools
Post by: troutrunner on February 10, 2014, 11:46:55 am
I'll start.

I find pegs and elastic bands so handy  :-))

And I like this little saw, it is so handy, not sure what to call it, perhaps Fred (http://i798.photobucket.com/albums/yy262/rhode-island-red/A%20few%20Smilies/Rollonfloorlaughing.gif) (http://s798.photobucket.com/user/rhode-island-red/media/A%20few%20Smilies/Rollonfloorlaughing.gif.html)

I agree with both the Kettle and a swan morton scalpel. I use them both every day and have done all my career. Indeed, I am on my third handle as the repeated fitting and removal of hundreds of blades (sometimes five a day whan cutting mould rubber) wears the slots wide enough that the blade pulls out when I am carving out apetures or cutting deeply into rubber. My blade of choice is the No11, as it has a shoulder to support the point which is useful when cutting thick plastic or carving.

But my one essential tool is a swiss needle file with a broken point. This I use for scribing panel lines etc. It is irreplacable as todays needle files are crap with the ends suddenly hurtling to a point rather than gradually ending.

The Mincraft drill is pretty good as well especially when plugged into the larger variable transformer. Dremel has its place, but the lowest setting is way too fast for what I do with it:O)

A 6 inch pocket square.  I measure and square everything with it.

My hands, closely followed by my 4 rotary power tools. I can't say Dremel because only one of them is and that only came as a pressie this last xmas.

Angle grinder.

In the hands of a craftsman, it's the delicate shaping tool of choice.

In my hands, however...  :embarrassed:

I keep my old prescription reading glasses for model making, they may not be quite as powerful as my current ones but they work for modelling.

"any tool that will do the job correctly at the right time"

I suppose the other question is "What is the most useless tool?" In my case it's the one I can't ***ding well find!!!

(About once every five years I need to deal with a circlip, so about five years ago I bought a pair of circlip pliers. Last Sunday I needed them - searched all my tool places, they've vanished.  >>:-(  )
