Title: Dumas Chris-Craft 19 Racing Runabout build
Post by: fastvee on February 18, 2014, 02:31:16 pm
Hi all, I forgot to post the build here  :embarrassed:   so this first post has few pics to start off.

I hope not to make too big mess of this but if I do you will find out.  >>:-(

So this is the kit:

After gluing some bits together...

It looked like this:

(notice the trademarked measuring weight   {-) )

Finished frame

Bottom planks (plastic/ sintra) are on.

Sides done(these will be covered with mahogany later on)

I had few issues with the build  like transom that needed re shaping after I was overly agressive with sand paper .

(this shows the all ready fixed edges)

I am not a fan of the plastic planks on a wooden kit, even that the outer layer will be covered with wood everywhere but the bottom. -but over all it is a nice kit.

I hope to see that also, this is my first kit that has any planking, and only my 2nd "wooden" build. -hoping to survive the build...

-Got the bow hole filled with balsa and white putty. ,slight dent on the side is also filled.

-Any thoughts what the front of the boat should be shaped like?  -the bow sides look a bit different, left has more cuvature  then right  -looking from front  () or \ /  ,now it is closer to ( /

edit. maybe this makes it clearer...

Thinking of sanding the left to match right, easier to sand to straight then fill and shape to match perfectly. But if it is not right then ...

Asked around the other forums and looks like the mahogany planking will "fix" these small differences.  :-))

-Did manage to try soldering the rudder, not perfect but if looked from some distance it looks ok. -I may give it some more polishing later(still not sure if it will be painted with the stuffing box or leave both bare brass..

Got few parts from Prop-Shop  %%

Once again good quality and really nice looking stuff.

They even custom build me the shaft, at very reasonable cost.

here they are compared to stock parts.

Also had time to fill a glass with distilled water and break in the brushes.

Tested the dremel polishing pads with automotive polishing compound. -and painted the dog bone chrome, I may add a coat of gold paint to it later.

Forgot to say that I finished the motor mount blocks also, 10x10mm (i guess pine), glued 3 layers of that using titebond III , to have 2 pieces of 10x30 blocks. Then sawed to shape and stained using the kit included stain(to test what it looks like, I may end up painting the bilge with mount) and then epoxy covered the whole block.

Got the stuffing tube installed and deck supports for sub planks are on.

Also soldered a strut from 2 pieces of brass , wanted something more scale then the plastic skeg what is in the kit...
(dont worry, the tube and strut will be painted with the hull)

What paint did you use to paint the dog bone chrome?

Hi, I used Parma Faskrome, water based airbrush acrylic. (can be hand brushed also)

Faskolor holds up well but if used under water needs clear coat.
