Hi folks

Kurt, you've opened a good topic. You mentioned the Stratos and I saw one running with a CMB90 today and it looked impressive and a capable handler in windy conditions. Although I don't think you have yet mentioned what you will be running this season, I always like your turn outs as they are always fast and exciting :-))

Mark, I reckon you need to be moving your bed into your garage with all of those boats to sort out O0

Tony, any chance of uploading a photo in this thread of your PPB Cat?

For my part I will be sticking with my A-Class SC46 crusader which I realise is a bit boring compared to the boats we are talking about :((

Cheers
Craig :-))

Sha will be running her cavalier again with a smaller engine which has proved to be reliable but not as fast,i will do A class again with the cougar running a new thunder tiger 46 as for the other races  :-X :-X {-) {-) {-)

Hi Kurt

I reckon Sha will do well with her cavalier. And as we know that reliability factor counts for so much.

I will be fascinated to see your thunder tiger 46. I have been looking/considering using one of those for ages. However can you buy the marine version with a supplied flywheel as opposed to the clutch system that they seem to be advertised with?

hi graig
my thunder tiger 46 was a ebay bargain,£12 bench run only but it was a plane engine, which i had converted.ran it for the first time last week and it went ok,
im sure sha will just plod on as always but shes now got a challenger 32 with a go 28 that we tested today that went really well, abit to well  %% {-) plus later this year im builder her another cavalier for A class maybe
not sure how many races we are doing this year, not all of them as we have other commitments but we are looking forward to seeing the new boats that are going to be racing.

LEO 46 marine head from Just Engines will fit Thunder Tiger 46 aircraft along with the Leo 46 flywheel and split collet. Just Engines still have (or had recently) Leo spares.

Hi folks

It has been said that some people have been a little quiet in respect of revealing their potential new boats for this season :} We know they are out there don't we? :-) So I think it is time for me to reveal at least one new boat currently being tested for this season. I think we need photos and a vid clip so I have included both below:

>
>
>
>

The new boat here is my brother Garry's new Mercury Cat. For the first time in a long time he took some time fitting this out instead of his usual rush job. I think it will pay him dividends.

(http://i734.photobucket.com/albums/ww350/DICKSONUK8/Mayhem%20Forum/DSC01919.jpg) (http://s734.photobucket.com/user/DICKSONUK8/media/Mayhem%20Forum/DSC01919.jpg.html)

Unlike his 2013 Cat, this even without trim adjustments has lift that was much lacking previously:
(http://i734.photobucket.com/albums/ww350/DICKSONUK8/Mayhem%20Forum/DSC01847.jpg) (http://s734.photobucket.com/user/DICKSONUK8/media/Mayhem%20Forum/DSC01847.jpg.html)

Here is a short you tube clip from today (a very murky foggy day) with the engine set very rich for the run in period. I suspect that once this engine is run in and leaned out, he might have to work hard to fine tune the hull settings for stability. What do you think?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wy4nLjlF5KE

Okay so this is one new boat revealed. If you have a new boat for 2014, please don't be hesitant in sharing a few photos within this thread O0

Cheers
Craig :-))

Hi Kurt

Hope you and your good lady are well and a belated happy new year to you Sha, and the lovely dog, and boats!

Enough of that!

Mercury cat should be a nice boat. Not run it at full speed into the turns, I scared to!!!!!

Just run it through 700cc's of fuel today, to run it in a bit on very rich needle settings and a 470 prop. Will up the prop load next run, and experiment a lot more on trim, strut angle rudder throw, and fuel location, need to think about dual bags etc.

Boat handles much better than I had expected. Am used to running the Navicraft cat which ran very wet and veered unexpectedly in all sorts of directions.

Much more testing soon!

Best regards

Garry and Carol

hi gary,
where are you running the tank? in the right hand side?be carefull not to go to big on the prop causing toque roll.the beauty with cats is they dont need big props mate,
you need to throw it into a corner and see what she does,it should go around at full speed,do be scared  {-) {-) iv just finished my d boat im going to be racing a scud ,not bad for a boat thats almost 40 years old {-)
keep us all up to date with how you get on mate, any question just ask

Tell Kurt his hatch isnt big enough  %% .
Craig Garry needs to ditch that wrap to centre header and swap it for a 105,it will achieve the same exit on the cowl but he may or may not need to mod his cowl, that header will never allow propper tuning as theyre tuned length is too long.
Mart
ps the Mercury is a fast cat in a straight line but likes to hook in the turns it might take some setting up to get right but its a decent cat.try a 6717/3 prop,is he using a skegged strut ?.

Hi Mart

I must admit I love boats with decent access to all the fittings. As Kurt said it makes things so much easier.

In respect of the Mercury Garry did originally intend to not have to use the WTC header. However he found that the cowl would require massive amounts removing in effect ruining it and the look of the boat. I agree it is a shame though as the true potential of that tuned engine can never be fulfilled with the pipe length being too long.

His strut did was the plain type with no lower skeg. Does a skegged strut give handling advantages on a cat such as this? Or does it make it too sensitive in turns?

Craig

to get the best out of the cat in the corners he should be using a skeg strut :-)) they really do make a diffrence and they help keep the cat in line and not skit about as much,i would never run one without one on O0

Hi mart and kurt

Yes I realise the wrc manifold will massively compromise the max engine performance. The zen is a 31cc tuned engine so will over power cat, so I thought the long manifold won't be detrimental, as at least it has more chance of running upright! Lower revs at top end, maybe a bit more torque with a pipe which is about 3.5cm too long!!!!

I tried to fit a 105 manifold but the hatch would not fit without looking like like it was sawn apart, which is why I went for the wrc job.

Have not yet run engine in. Started with a 470 2 blade bronze prop. Have a 6717/3 brass  will experiment with at next outing. Ran with one 1000cc bag in the  starboard sponson, but have designed set up to run twin Baxter bags, one in each sponson, will try these out next outing. On strut, just using standard mono strut, again have one with bladed tip, but not yet tried out yet.

Thanks again to both of you your advice is very much appreciated.

A cat NEEDS a skeg or it will slide round the corners, thats fine it looks cool but for racing your gonna want more sharper turns which is what the skeg will help with much the same as turn fins on a mono.So Yes it will help cornering a lot,on cats you need less rudder throw and can get away with a shorter one too so that can also gain you some speed.

Lol defo no problem working on things,im wondering how rigid that thing is though with all that wide open space on the top.
Hey you just gave me an idea,im off to measure the loft opening lol.

there is a new wtc header thats not as long as yours garry,iv seen them they are more of a tighter closer bend giving less header which should do the job nicely mate
mart,,did you measure the loft hatch its great for hiding things away from SWIMBO   LOL  {-) {-)  the boat is very rigid you wouldnt thinks so with that size opening  :-))

Hi Mart
Garry's PMB competition pipe has a wide diameter silencing chamber which is why the header you kindly showed would still give issues with his hatch cover in terms of clearance. The product that Kurt mentioned is one that I too have seen advertised and I also think could be a great solution. Having seen Garry's new Mercury in action it is by a mile much better (faster and better handling) than his 2013 winning Cat. And for that reason alone I suspect he may stick with what he has currently which is fair enough.

However Garry, if you decide to seek that ideal pipe length using the 105 header, you might want to borrow from me the Stainless Tuned Pipe I have that remains in pristine condition. It looks similar to the one in Mart's photo. The thing I love about this pipe is that the water cooling jacket is integral to the pipe. It does not rely upon O-rings that can fail. The pipe having a positive clamp onto the header tube does not require any accessories to prevent it sliding in or out at the connection:

Thanks kurt, Craig And Mart!

The wrap to flange header is narrow ideal! One to put in the ideas bag. I did consider getting this, when building cat but would need to buy new hatch as it sits off centre.

Definitely one to consider...

Hi Kurt

That very header is the one I spotted. I reckon that this product may be a gem for those that need to retain the WTC option whilst wanting better power from their engines. Thank you for sharing the link.

Hi all
The mpm manifold is a wtf not wtc manifold. This means the pipe will run in line from the exhaust flange not the centre. It is a great compromise to give a short pipe length,. I considered this on my boat but I had already cut the hatch down the centre, instead of to the left of centre.

If I transfer to wft manifold, will need to change hatch, shield and pipe mount. Will do if I don't get enough speed.
Cheers

Garry

Post by: MPM on March 05, 2014, 09:54:15 pm
Looking good Garry. Yes you would need to alter the hatch to fit the WTF manifold. just because it gets abit of an angle to get it to the rear... Not as much at 105 tho.

Ive come to a standstill with my build!:(... Hopefully will get back on track at weekend!

Im pretty sure ive seen a falcon cat use a 105 deg header and no mods to hatch, same cat as mercury  built in China by promise hobbies.Maybe it depends what pipe etc.
If hes happy with how its performing then no worries but if he wants max performance then that header needs to go.Anyway even if the hatch did need remodeling isnt that all part of the fun ?.

hi Garry,,,,,no the tk is still in its box,iv re tuned the zen that i ran last year,it seems to be quicker and im made up with it...i am going to try some different props on it because im sure it has abit more to give me,failing that maybe rebore out some carbs and try that %%  but it handled the turns really well and apart from hitting some wood in the lake and knocking rudder up, it did go well.one more week to test and a couple of nights trying diferent carbs ,,,but on the whole,,,,yeah mate made up with it :-))

You always do up the anti with new boats and engine combos, looks like this one could be a real contender! Your boats are always exciting and a joy to see racing, that hull seemed to turn at full throttle without a glitch?

Is it a cat, I think it is, couldn't make that out for sure on my iPhone?

I tested my mercury today, it ran well with a tuned zen, but looks placid compared with yours.
I didn't dare chuck it into turns at full bore!

its the old conquest garry i raced last year in cat class 2,i ran it with a mild mod tune that i did and got bored the other night and re tuned it again ,need to get it decked hopefully this week to up compression which might see abit more from it,,placing the fuel bag in the right hand sponson helps it corner at full throttle.
im sure your cat will well its all about pushing it to its limits and beyond so you know how far it can be pushed mate, set up right you will be surprised at what it will do  :-)) :-)) :-))
