To track ships - Marinetraffic AIS:

MV = Motor Vessel ie. MV Free Enterprise (diesel driven engines)
SS = Steamship ie. SS Manxman (Steam turbine driven engines)

Gordon, she might be out of range at the moment.
The AIS tracking stations are land based, and if the ship is a little way further off, they go out of range.  This was very noticable when I was watching the Pride of Calais sail to Aliaga in Turkey when she was crossing the Bay of Biscay.

They might be on a commercial level, but for us mere mortals we can only use such sites as Marinetraffic, which may not give us all the data available to the commercial ship owners and authorities.

Is this the MV Discovery you are after? Heading north along the Irish Sea?

Yes Gordon
Looks like she is going through the Minches
between Skye and Lewis.
Happy memories of surveying that area in the early
seventies.
