Hi Gra2,

That is looking absolutely cracking !!

I'm building the Italeri MAS as a static model

http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234943576-another-mas-boat/

So can fully appreciate what you have achieved, particularly with the wheelhouse and torpedo launch cradle.

I've seen Christians hulls advertised  may I ask what the quality is like and is that a built in flange on the top of the hull?

Cheers longshanks

Hi GRA,

Your build looks awesome!
Which plans are you building from?

As I'm terrible with empiric scales, how long is your hull (in inches, or cm)?

I'm working on a 110 cm version and I'm currently a bit stuck on how to realize a large enough hatch without compromising the looks...
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,34033.msg336713.html#msg336713 (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,34033.msg336713.html#msg336713)
I've got the bare hull running, check out the video in my build thread.(Turn up the sound really high.)

As you can see I've gone the same route regarding the steering, and it works a treat, as long as the tiller arm on the rudder and the arm on the servo are the same length.
You'll need this amount of rudderthrow.

The way you have it in your pictures will result in slack in the lines, hopefully not too bad as it'll make steering at speed quite hazardous...

I've changed from two props to one bigger prop, one reason being the higher efficiency (which isn't really an item with the brushless power available), the other is the hull design.

I've build a smaller prototype and discovered the steps work really well, drawing air under the hull, the point where this happens causes a jolt in the speed; without more throttle the boat accelerates due to the lower drag.
Downside to this phenomenon is the fact the air/water mixture affects the prop and rudder efficiency; as you can read in my thread, small props loose grip above a certain speed and the revs go up, while the speed goes down, until the steps have lost their function and the hull runs fully in the water again.

The prototype rudder was to scale and when I increased the propsize to keep part of the blades in undisturbed water, the speed increased too and the steps drew massive amounts of air under the hull, rendering the small rudderblade useless and the boat uncontrollable until speed was reduced.

The larger 110 cm boat got an enlarged rudderblade and the prop was positioned further forward to eliminate as much 'foaming' as possible, also, as the prop is in line with the rudder, the distance between prop and rudder made the steering less aggressive.

I fear your props (the brass props look good but are not suited) will prove to be too small to keep the boat on the plane; as soon as the steps do their job, the props will stand in the air water mixture...

Regards, Jan.

Hi Jan,
Thanks for comment on my build I have viewed your build log before on this forum.
The plan I have is a Dave Metcalf plan from Model Boat Magazine June 1995 but it appears to be the same as your plan but I am looking at lots of photos and various builds of the Italeri 1/35 scale Mas Boat Kit to help with mine.
Length of my boat is 31" approx.
I did trial my boat before attaching deck and it went okay with my prop setup but steering was not to good.
I intend to increase rudder size when I finish build.
I take your point about tiller arm and servo arm.

Hi Gra2,

Good to hear you didn't have the running issues I had with my 75 cm prototype and the 110 cm version, I guess there must be a slight difference in the hull shape.
Either that, or you didn't run faster than 20 km/h, at which speed the steps don't work as much air under the hull as they do when you go faster.

What motors on which Voltage are you running, if I may ask?

Another question if I may; as my plans are rather simple, I'm not sure how much the deck curve is, I'm presuming 5-6 mm higher than the sides, but that's a guess...

Regards, Jan.
Title: Re: Mas Boat 1/24 Scale.
Post by: gra2 on March 11, 2014, 06:06:03 am
Hi Jan,
My motors are Turnigy 3648-850 kv powered by one 3s 4600ma Lipo.
I may change to a higher kva when boat is finished.

Camber on deck I would not go below 6mm for your larger hull if you look at photos you may feel you need more.
Hope this helps.

Regards,Gra2

Post by: pompebled on March 11, 2014, 04:54:16 pm
Hi Gra2,

Good lord, you have even more power installed than I have in my MAS (1200W max).

Granted, depending on propsize you'll most likely never draw the full 1800W, but still...
With the right props you should be able to use those 8500 rpm under load to make the boat run at least as fast as my MAS.

I assume it's a typo when you say you want to install even more power (as KVA=Watt) and you mean a higher KV (rpm/Volt) to be able to run (even) faster?

Thanks for the indication of the camber of the deck, I'll take it into account when I make the beams.

Regards, Jan.

gra2..................I can see how the release mechanism pivots & releases the depth charge.....is there a limiting device to control the rate of release over time or distance of subsequent charges?

Is that 1/16"brass wire used as the pivot pins & control rod?

Looking forward to the next set of images :-)).........Derek

G/day Derek,
The brass rod is 1mm diam.
I have no info on how mine cage operates. With cage on an angle to stern I assumed that gravity would roll next mine into pivot nest and you would then crank handle to release.

Paint scheme is not based on any particular boat.

Boat back in water have changed setup to 30mm props and made rudder slightly deeper did try larger props but to much power could not control at full throttle it does run well with 30mm props at full throttle.

Can now add rest of fittings to finish boat.

Boat back in water have changed setup to 30mm props and made rudder slightly deeper did try larger props but to much power could not control at full throttle it does run well with 30mm props at full throttle.
Hi Graham,

Congratulations on a smashing build!

Could you elaborate on the props issue please?
In what way does the boat get out of control?

From my point of view you could run a tad faster, so the steps start to work, making the hull run more free.
But that's coming from a lunatic, who tends to run his planing scale hulls way too fast...

The boat runs very nice in the pictures, but we'd like to see a video, if possible...

Regards, Jan.

Hi Jan,

Thanks for comments.
I know what you mean about more than scale speed most of my planing hulls are like that.

The Mas with larger props at full throttle seems to push the bow down,at part throttle it planes quite well.
With the smaller props the hull planes at part throttle and maintains this position at full throttle probably doing a scale 60 knots? but still handles well.

It all comes down to personal satisfaction.
Might be able to organize a video in the future I will see what I can do.

Hi Graham,

The bow being pushed down is a combination of the propshaft angle and the propchoice, if the props generate a fair amount of lift, changing them for props that have less lift will make a difference.

But the propshaft angle isn't that easy to change...

Judging by the pictures, the hull runs a tad wet, or it runs at that speed where the steps are about to level out the hull after which it'll run quicker and the transom gets up more, but I'd have to see some running video to be able to confirm or deny that.

Regards, Jan.

Had a little look at the quick video and very well done looks great. Full throttle would be very fast I would imagine.

Lucky you had that picture of the real thing to hand, so cool and stylish (could the Italians have designed it any other way?)

The Breda is a work of art in its own right. I am really impressed with that and all the brass framing. Lovely build, thanks for taking the time to put progress shots up.
