now that smart tv s have wi fi built in and you connect to it using a laptop how and what do you use as a key board would like to know before I spend my money.
-
I looked at smart TV, it should not need a laptop as it is all in the TV, and comes with a keyboard, at least they do in China.
I thought they overpriced as a normal flatscreen TV+laptop+HDMI cable, does the same job, much better, for much less money. And the sales guy agreed with me. I would wait till they get a lot cheaper, and in the meantime just plug in your old laptop to a flatscreen tV

hi tiger tiger I connected my lap top up to my tv with an hdmi cable but the picture was only as big as the laptops 15 inches and the writing was not much larger I thought it might be as large as tv 32 inch not up on computers thanks gordon

I run an old laptop with a broken screen on a 24" flat screen TV using a standard vga cable, you might need to change the screen resolution, or a setting on the tv as I can get full screen on the tv.

your current tv should run the laptop full screen if you let me know make and model I'll try to find the settings you need :-))

Basic navigation around the built in apps / browser on the t.v. is achieved via the remote supplied with it,very slow for entering text one letter at a time !, some models support a wireless or bluetooth air mouse type keyboard ( logitech k400 as an example ) which is much better, streaming from your p.c./ laptop to the t.v. may require some additional software like XBMC.
Best bet is to google the t.v. make and model that you're interested in and add wireless keyboard to the search.
I forgot to add that there's also the possibility of a smartphone app. for your chosen t.v. that will allow full control of it and text entry from the phone's on screen keyboard.

The problem with all this wonderful technology is that at the end of it all you have still got the same old programmes. {:-{

Risking going political - thats the same problem as voting, you still get the government.
Using a TV as a screen for a laptop often works, but can need some fiddling with the laptops display settings. A mate wanted to hook his into his network which needed an extra magic box which did the wifi connection but crucially came with software to allow a laptop or similar device to act as the control box. Effectively it became a network connected monitor that could, by pressing the right buttons on its remote, also be a telly.
Currently, in a bedroom, I'm doing it the other way round. I have a spare monitor and a surlpus freeview box. I got a £10 magic box off fleabay and some appropriate cables out of the spares box et voile, a telly.

Generally true although you do have access to on-demand / catchup as well as youtube and the various film suppliers out there, I think a bigger problem may turn out to be all these little 2.4ghz transmitters in your house (same frequency as a microwave oven), mobile phone,router,dect house phone, central heating controllers etc.etc.

Logically after all these years you'd expect the normal cooker and microwave to have merged into one device. There have been some attempts, but most people still have separate devices. Why - because to do a job well needs somewhat specialised kit.
Frigates/Aircraft Carriers/Submarines
Cars/Vans
Bombers/Fighters
Front doors/Patio doors
Computers/Televisions
I have a smartphone. It's a good one, it's very useful and does a lot of things - but none of them really well. Eg. it's too big as just a phone, too small as just a 'screen', etc.
In short what I'm saying is, unless you have some overarching reason to combine two or more functions into one piece of kit - don't!

most smart tv's are ok but not great. As has been said, having a seperate computer setup works alot better. Tv's just don't have the same computing power in them making them extreamly slow and doing this sort of thing. These days you can get computers which are tiny designed to sit behind your flatscreen tv on the wall. dedicated to doing all the computer type stuff and they do it extreamly well compared to the smart tv.

Don't forget that ANY device connected to your home wifi router also needs to be password protected as well, not just your computer! Not doing so just leaves a backdoor open to hackers to get into your complete system. There was an article only last week about a security company showing how they gained access to bank details on a computer by using the 'smart wifi' system on the home's fridge.

Anyone tried a DP ( DisplayPort ) to TV cable? I don't get any sound with mine..... {:-{
-
One of my friends runs a 3.5mm headphone jack from her laptop to her TV, or sound system.
Her HDMI didn't transfer the sound, so the adapter cord from her headphone jack linked up the sound.
My sister's laptop used the HDMI to connect sound and picture to her 32" tv.
However, she has to change sound settings to get the audio back on the laptop when she disconnects.
I ran VGA to an Analog to digital converter box, then HDMI out to the TV, the sound is still off the computer speakers.

tv is a 32 inch sony kdl bravia laptop Lenovo 6 months old thanks

I was thinking of buying a smart tv may leave it a while to see if they improve.....
-
the main reason I have the laptop hooked up is that despite trying many aerials for the tv it is still unable to find any channels, despite our town having a digital repeater to bounce the signal to us, the tv refuses to find it (before the changeover we could get 1 whole freeview channel) so since we have sky for the main TV I log on to sky go and watch tv via the laptop (the other room upstairs is linked to the sky link channel and has to watch the same as the living room).
