Title: Collectaholics
Post by: warspite on March 13, 2014, 09:11:19 am
I started to watch this part way through last night, and thought, yes they were poking fun, but not such that the collector was being put down for it, I can understand some collecting things to the nth degree (beer can man) - and was puzzled that his supposedly long suffering wife only allowed a move to a 5 bedroom house to allow him to store his cans in the largest bedroom, and he only can store the 7100+ cans in that one and only room.

He collects every type and if that means that the only difference between one and the next is that the graphic changes to reflect a change in a printed on can offer then he collects that as well, I dont know what the cost is for a can of beer or lager is, but assume it is £1 per can (I know you can get cheaper - but after averaging it out and taking into consideration rare cans) the valuation of the collection was in the region of £15,000, so you could argue that his collection is worth twice what he paid for it, the room was fitted with shelves and each can displayed, but he was running out of room and storing some in boxes, if he got a pc and photgraphed each can and stored them all in boxes - to the ceiling, no shelves, compact layout in each box - there would be more room, he could display only the first can of the series he has and the current can - swapping this out when a new can is bought, and also display those that are rare or a series like the tennants with girls.

The other was a train and petrol enthustiast - if he was to concentrate only on the train memerabellia, and auction the petrol stuff - AA, RAC, garage signs etc he could be looking £50,000+ of which one AA sign was worth about £1300 alone.

All in all, interesting to see that there are collectors who are serious - in the beer can situation - his wife limiting him to the largest bedroom for the cans in a 5 bedroom house seemed reasonable until you think - if they are using another bedroom what is the other 3 being used for, if they did downsize, they could get a small house with a huge garage solely for his collection - thought what was the point in moving to a larger house if the number of rooms being used for his collection was limiting, he even admitted to it being a compulsion, very nice collection well displayed - clean - tidy, his wife was probably just lonely as he spent more time with the cans than her.

depends if you have pierced only the bottom and left the top undamaged/open, and then cleaned it out (watch the BBC2 show), then it might be worth oooooo about 2p. {-)
