Depending on the size, you can mould it in sections using pallet strapping as the mould. If you use a normal resin (in fact I used Gorilla glue - 'cos that's all had in the shed at the time), the strap comes away clean. ;)

I got mine from North Yard Model Railway parts in New Zealand.
They have a web site and on line catalogue

For this effect I used a fine mesh from Mantua Models and glued it to a thin sheet of Platicard, using a small wallpaper roller to press it down.  OK for small areas.  Looked quite effective.

Just another idea for you to consider.  I used a plasticard sheet from Squires (www.squirestools.com) called '4mm granite sets - grey' and they do a larger size as well.  It's   I know they're squares not diamonds but cut on the diagonal they look reasonable.  Might be a solution if all else fails.

EMA models do a vac formed one but no mention of scale might be worth a call to them.

Look at the bottom of the bags of orange SAINSBURRY, the big bags, there is a black plate(patch) which is streaked as you want him.
You cross this plate with some wax.
You can hug as often as you want with some Epoxy resin.
There are some time one or two small defects on the black plate

Try Macs Mouldings, I'm sure a at one of the shows there was tread plate on display.
Don't see it on the web site, but just e mail and ask.
