Maybe a daft question. Does it matter which way up a lead acid battery is positioned in the boat, i.e. terminals not on the top? Will be charged out of the boat in the normal upright position.

It is Ok to lay this type of battery on its side as it contains Gel and not as liquid.
Be aware that the centre of balance is not in the middle as the top half is slightly lighter than the base section.

One of our club members makes battery boxes for all his models. He puts the contacts in the bottom of the box then the battery in upside down. He does not seem to have any problems and there are no push in connectors to deal with.

Only applies to SEALED lead acid, of course. The other type shouldn't even be considered, but you never know.

SLA batteries upside down will also have some effect on
stability as the box will be top heavy with the light portion of the
battery lowest.

I was always told that any orientation is OK, but if at all possible not upside down.
Reason being if you do get any electrolyte condensing, if you are upside down it cannot be reabsorbed into the battery as it just sits in the cavity at the top of the battery.
I suppose if you are removing the battery for charging, then it can recombine at this point, assume it is charged the right way up.
When the battery is on it's side, the matting in the battery can wick any condensate back in as.
If up the right way, obviously the condensate falls directly back onto the matting.
