Kelly's Heros
:-))
it was all true :D
-
Still got to be The Great Escape for me.
It's my favourite marching band tune, loved it when the RAF Central band played it at the Diamond jubilee parade with me and my fellow RAFies marching behind them :-))
-
C in C Home Forces vote would be for Clint Eastwood, so either Where Eagles Dare or Kellys Hero's would both be fine :embarrassed:
-
Hi,
Think I will go for Gettysburg :-))
-
Martin beat me to it, spot on!
Mind you I have been lucky and have never been in conflict. If I had I might take a different view. :D :D
-
O0 Its an oldie but the message is great "All quiet on the western front" the 1930s version . O0 O0

I have spoken to veterans who were on the Normandy Landings, and have been told by more than one that the opening 15 minutes of the film "Saving Private Ryan" were about as near to what it was like on the beach,as you will ever see.

-
for me 'Battle of the Bulge' and 'Battle of Britain'

Not seen 'Saving Private Ryan' but I have visited Omaha Beach on several occasions and from the top it is very clear indeed just what an appalling task the Americans had in assaulting the German defences. The American Cemetery overlooking the beach is something that no visitor will ever forget.

Tough one! Battle of Britain was the first to spring to mind (it made a big impression when I first saw it - I think I was about 14) but Das Boot and Kelly's Heroes must be up there. Still haven't seen Saving Private Ryan - must rectify that.
-
Hi,
In Saving Private Ryan it was a pity that they used the wrong Landing Craft!
Regards
-
Still haven't seen Saving Private Ryan - must rectify that.
If you get the opportunity, watch it on a big screen with a 5.1 sound-surround system. You will be ducking involuntarily. %)

Luckily. my tech guru son has converted his bedroom into a cinema. 60" screen, 5.1 sound, Lay Z Boy reclining chairs. All that's missing is the popcorn. :D
-
Lots of great War films already mentioned, but for me..."Cross Of Iron".....has to be up there with the greats,....if you get the chance, watch the un-edited version....it was directed by Sam Peckinpah,.....and there is a quote from the film.... which...will stick in my mind for ever....."Come, and I will show you, where the Iron Crosses grow"....

Yes, Band of Brothers.... will have to put that back on my 'Must re-watch list'
Currently re-watching Michael Palin's Pole to Pole.
-
wasn't overly impressed with clint eastwoods two films - letters from iwo jima, looked like they tried to emulate saving private ryan and failed, as a disaster - high on the honours list would be the last version of Pearl harbour - could only describe it as hollywood pap. {-)
-
for me 'Battle of the Bulge' and 'Battle of Britain'
Battle of the Bulge....great.film spoiled by their use of American Patton tanks masquerading as Tigers,. {-) ..at least in Kellys Heroes, they tried to show a Tiger by using a Russian T34....with a Tiger top half... :-))
-
T34 ? are you sure, it definetly had all the right shapes for a tiger, not a sloping front in sight, its like when they use a White M3A2 half track for a german half track instead of a hanomag

Definitely a T34 with a "prop top" built by the film crew.. Check the wheel & track arrangement, Tiger wheels overlap (apparently a maintenance nightmare) whereas T34 wheels don't overlap each other..
Paul.
-
For me, Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Stalag 17, and very relevant today is Battle of Algiers (1966). You need the version with subtitles for the last one, but really does sum up recent military events in that whole region today.
-
Forgot to mention 'Cruel Sea'
-
The Cruel Sea - absolutely - but what about Tora Tora Tora? Made in the days before CGI the special effects are superb - it beats 'Pearl' hands down in every respect
-
T34 ? are you sure, it definetly had all the right shapes for a tiger, not a sloping front in sight, its like when they use a White M3A2 half track for a german half track instead of a hanomag
T34 sloping front is part of the top hull..not the bottom,....and as Warspite says Tigers had interlocking wheel configuration...which incidently was done...to protect the inside lower hull,as this was thin metal as opposed to the thicker top sides ,and front glacis plate,.....
-
Where Eagles Dare

the most poignant film for me has to be Schindlers List...whilst it was,nt really what could be called a war movie...as such....it was and will always be a milestone,..for some.....and.the full horror of it,....caused me..to not finish a tour of Auschwitz....talki about haunting....there is no more a haunting place on the planet....as there is here....

Credit where credit due :-)) - it was hellboy paul who correctly identified the interlocking wheel config, I must say the prop department did very well to create a convincing tiger. O0

When they used the M3A2 halftrack...with the 75mm howitzer on top....at the beginning of the film...this was not meant to be a Hanomag...or a Pakwagen or to give it its proper name...Sdkfz 251..with Pak40...cos if that was the case...then they should have been using...Kubelwagens and an Opel Blitz ..instead of a Jeep....and an American truck....

If I understood the storyline correctly, they were bluffing their way through the german lines hoping that with the darkness and confusion due to the rain that no one recognized the jeep being there, I would have to watch the film again to see if they used US vehicles with black crosses for the germans.
-
For those that can't watch Das Boot cos of subtitles the original is on BluRay completely remastered sound track in Dts HD and English most of the voices by the original actors lip sync is excellent
-

You have hit the nail on the head,..they were bluffing their way through,...and the half track did,nt have any Balkan Kreutzes and with Mulligan,s shells falling all over the place...confusion reigned supreme....
-
That also applied to the opening bluff with the drunk german paperpusher in the front seat.
-
Dunkirk for me, mainly because I was in it, together with 4,000 other British soldiers, made at Camber Sands in 1957. (Dunkirk had altered so could not be used.) All troops near to the cameras were equipped with old BDs and long sword bayonets. The bangs on the beach were b.....y loud and would blow you off your feet if you were too close to them. I was near the ambulance in the centre of the beach. Had to be fit, it was a long way from the surf to the dunes as we played an air attack Scene. We were 5 days shooting, and were paid 1 Pound a day, if you got wet an extra 10 Shillings. Real dosh in those days.Join the army and see the World.

Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day-Lewis, not quite modern warfare, but displays some of the guerrilla tactics adapted by the Americans, 'fraid it doesnt shed a good light on the English, but the sound track is very good and the scenery is stunning, almost historical correct.
-
Guerilla Tactics?....in Last of the Mohicans.....i think you,re confusing this with the Patriot....which reminds me....the partially historically correct...Braveheart....where we sent them home tae think again..... {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)
-
"partially historically correct"? Well yes, they got Wallace's name right but fell over after that. The little we do know about Wallace was that he was a son of a minor knight, a Lowlander who was red-haired and above average height and commanded his forces at the Battle of Stirling Bridge, which was fought upon and around said bridge. He probably never wore the kilt and did not paint his face blue; a fashion common among the Picts who had died out at least 300 years before his time. He most certainly was not a dread-locked Australian with ducks-disease and a dreadful accent who fought the Battle of Stirling Bridge in the middle of a field. He also never met any English Princesses. The film was bunkum and nothing else.
Wallace was a great figure who had vision ahead of its time but lack of support from the Scot's nobility meant that he never sent anybody "home tae think again". That phrase refers to Bruce post-Bannockburn and Edward II who was forced back into England.

-
there,s always one...and here was me thinking that Rivetcounters only came out against models....as for your history lesson...well...this topic is all about best films...not..."look how intelligent i am..... {-) {-) {-) {-)
-
Have to agree with BarryM. I thought the film was pretty indifferent and historical claptrap. However, I disagree about the accent, which I thought Mr Gibson captured rather well, if we assume that Wallace was born in the East End of Glasgow.
In all fairness, he made a better job of being a Scot than Richard Attenborough's dire stab at a Jockanese accent in Jurassic Park - and Dickie had the advantage of spending a lot of time among the Scots in his holiday home on the Isle of Bute...
-
irrespective...of what you think of it...historically!....it did make millions...gave people jobs....and was enjoyed by most of those that went to see it....myself included....

It made money for its backers, was mostly filmed in Ireland and if you enjoyed it - that's fine but let's not pretend it was any more accurate than Tom & Jerry - possibly less!
Barry M
-
Mentioned before but for me:-
Hamburger Hill
and
Battle of Algiers
are both superb and top my list.
Battle of Algiers has perhaps the coolest looking soldier ever, and definitely the best uniforms ever:-
(http://itpworld.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/la-battaglia-di-algeri-original.jpg?w=717&h=448)
But the Odd Angry Shot is also excellent.

Burt Lancaster? 300 Spartans????
oops!...i nearly got it right....I should have said ....Go Tell it to the Spartans....which was a tribute film to Leonidas...300 Spartans....
-
Besides Zulu I have seen The Yangtze Incident nearly as many times and enjoyed it just as much.
All the Chinese field gunners were trainees at HMS Ganges and it was filmed on the river nearby.
Geoff
-
I'll go Cockleshell heroes too, Also don't forget bridge on the River Kwai.
The Sandpebbles is good for the boat scenes
John
-
Must agree with oldiron.......the steam engine & machinery scenes in the Sandpebbles were true to life :-))....no mockups....just real machinery........Derek
-
I'm not sure Sandpebbles was a good war film but it was my favourite Steve Mcqueen film even
better than Great Escape

John
-
John,
Have you seen it?? it is the film written, directed and staring Paul Gross? (the Mountie for the TV series Due south)
I can't describe it, there are no words to describe the horrendousness of this film, it lasts for about 2hours and only the first and last 10/15minutes are bearable, the rest is a dire love story.
In fact my mother, who hates war films and loves her mills and boon books thought it was really good >>:-( >>:-( >>:-(
not an endorsement of a war film is it :o :o
-
So in a nutshell, if there had to be a clear winner - it is looking like ............? {:-{
Seems kelly heros gets a good mention, but not the winner, for a clear war film - with realism and acuracy i nominate Saving private ryan with cruel sea second or the other similar film with noel coward, before kellys.
-
I,ll agree that Saving Private Ryan...is up there for realism....but...had you seen ..the un-edited version of Sam Peckinpah,s...Cross of Iron....like i did at the cinema....there was a moment when every man in that cinema...flinched at what happened in the barn sequence....with a female Russian soldier.....suffice to say....it was,nt for the feint hearted....and the close combat sequences between the German rearguard and the advancing Russians....was up there with Private Ryan....if not ahead...and bear in mind...this film was over 20 years before Private Ryan.......
-
Surprised that Burt Lancaster`s "The Train" didn't get a mention. Shot in black and white in France about the resistance thwarting an attempt by the Nazis to take a trainload of priceless artworks to Germany towards the end of WWII. Lots of real explosions, authentic aircraft and steam engines etc etc. Made in the 60s. Someone mentioned "The Charge of the Light Brigade". There was a big scam just prior to it being made with a company recruiting extras for the film. A few months in the Crimea, tented accommodation on the Black Sea (?) good pay, food etc etc. I was measured for uniform, asked if I could ride a horse, if not could I fall off realistically etc etc. Paid my £30 registration fee and waited the call with my South African pal, a fellow officer ( "could shout in Afrikaans to sound like a Russian Cossack ! " ) The dream ended when we were contacted by the police asking if we had paid cash or cheque, if the latter might get our money back if cash too bad. The organiser did time for her little caper, seems she recruited in a dozen UK cities for her 600 extras. The genuine film was made using the Turkish army :((
-
We,re nae a as ald as you....and here,s another that never got a mention....A Midnight Clear....it had a limited release ..20 years ago...but its an excellant movie....it takes place in the Ardenne...where the Battle of the Bulge took place....
-
Don't think anyone has mentioned Days of Glory. As powerful and as moving as Private Ryan and tells the war from the perspective from a seldom heard of soldiering group Algerian Muslim nationals fighting for the free French. Realistic and moving.
-
i used to be a hippie.......and Lsd..did,nt only stand for pounds shillings and pennies... {-) .....and i,ve seen that film..and thoroughly enjoyed it......
-

That was a good film remember it :-))
-
Yes Cross of Iron was a brutally realistic film but though it was brilliant (James Coburn particularly)
I always thought it was made as an anti-war film
Geoff
-
The Pianist...a Roman Polanski film about surviving in the Warsaw Ghetto
The Boys in Company C....the original and best Vietnam movie.
Fortress of War.....about the German attack on Brest.....good battle scenes and tanks.
City of Life and Death....About the Japanese 'Rape of Nanking'....brutal.
And the rest of the films that have been mentioned

Enemy at the Gates is a film that takes a very different perspective of the battle of Stalingrad. A good story, a strong cast, and don't let the fact that Jude Law is in it put you off.
-
the swimmer on the float and a plane propeller scene was my first encounter with a bit of gore as a kid
-
A good wartime time crime film worth watching is Night of the Generals, it uses the Warsaw Ghetto destruction and the assassination attempt on Hilter as the backdrop to a serial killer plot. Starring Peter O Toole and Tom Courtney.
