Hi everyone, saw this little beauty at Weymouth this afternoon, I think she may be in for the marine model festival next weekend, but don't quote me on that. She is the Pelican..
Cheers..........Tony

Could anyone tell me what kind of rig this is?

I went through "masting and rigging of Ocean Carriers" by Underhill and the nearest is this, though I am not sure but in the Med in the 18/19 centuries they had figates rigged similiar and they were called pole something rigged frigates. So schooner seems to be the name of the rig , but not in the traditional european idea of the rig.

she's a bit of a hybrid, but some would say a cross between a 3 masted barque and a (2 masted) brig, or brigantine.
neil.

Pelican of London is a unique Tall Ship, actively chartering to a Sail Training organisation and giving young and old the opportunity to work a real sailing ship. Originally an Arctic trawler, she was virtually completely rebuilt and converted to her current form and re-launched in 2007.
She cruises under sail at 10+ knots and her unique Mainmast Barquentine (Xebec/Polacre) sail plan enables her to sail to windward much better than other similar ships.
Taken from her sales particulars, she is currently on passage past Jersey on her way to St. Malo presumably for the start of the Tall Ships race this week.

What a curious bird is the pelican,
For its beak can hold more than its bellycan.

Cheers Boneacre, that was what I was trying to remember the name of Xebec/Poleacre, curious but obviousily viable working rigs.

Sorry, Boneash, I meant, finger slip.
