Last Monday, after I'd been away for ten days or so, the second time I logged on to the PC (Widows 7 Ultimate, I'm the administrator) I got the error message about not being able to find my profile, and despite several restarts it wouldn't let me log on, though I could get on as another user. So via her account I found a helpful youtube which told me to start in safe mode, get into regedit, change a couple of file names, set a couple of numbers back to zero - and it worked. This afternoon I got the same error message, but restarted the PC and got in ok. (Phew) Is there anything I should be looking for which could be creating this fault? I have had a couple of failed Adobe updates recently - could it be them? My auto backups are set to Sunday evening, so it shouldn't be anything to do with them. Please don't get too technical - my regedit was way out of my comfort zone!

My immediate thought is. 'virus'.
Have you re-installed your anti-virus, and malware programmes?
-
I highly recommend Glary Utilities 4 - http://www.glarysoft.com/

Agreed. Glary Utilities is an excellent program.

I have AVG 2013, fully up to date. should that not catch most evil things?
-
I also now run AVG 2014 and ran "Glary" which cleaned up a few things that AVG doesn't do.
Am a PC novice, but putting it simply, AVG and "Glary'' do two different jobs.
On my machine AVG is used for viruses and Glary for tune ups.
You can do a review via Google, of the two products, which will list the differences but to confuse the issue AVG also offer a similar tune up product.
Welcome to the world of computers.

I had something similar recently and once I got in had to create a new user profile and transfer all my files to it. It was something to do with a corrupted file and was the start of a hard drive failure. Does your computer have some diagnostics it can run? If it does it might help identify the problem. Graham.

Graham, Transfer of files to a new user profile looked a bit tricky to me so I went for the option I could understand! Thanks, Martin - I've run the Glarysoft thing and it found lots of faults in the registry and said it had fixed them - it also cleaned up a lot of temp files, which I thought were meant to get binned automatically at the end of each session. I guess I should run it from time to time.
