Title: Mountfleet "Danny Boy"
Post by: steamshed on April 21, 2014, 07:50:59 am
Hi All

Just bought the kit and had planned on steaming it however, I've decided to put electric in, the big question what motor brushless or brushed, if brushed geared belt or gears and finally what size motor.
Thanks all

Mike

You will get better low-speed control with a brushed set-up. I'd probably start with one of these on 12v: http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/torpedo_850_belt_drive.html (http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/torpedo_850_belt_drive.html)

Morning Steamshed
Not sure the size of a Danny boy  hull but if you can fit this motor in http://www.modelboatbits.com/shop/article_MBB-900M/900-HIGH-TORQUE-MOTOR.html?sessid=UoLjeGfIhMRsKtOKjC8VSNRRmvtVO8zTdNpXZXbSsyvuDIcfiu6zpc7LnVPw1wmF&shop_param=cid%3D86%26aid%3DMBB-900M%26 (http://www.modelboatbits.com/shop/article_MBB-900M/900-HIGH-TORQUE-MOTOR.html?sessid=UoLjeGfIhMRsKtOKjC8VSNRRmvtVO8zTdNpXZXbSsyvuDIcfiu6zpc7LnVPw1wmF&shop_param=cid%3D86%26aid%3DMBB-900M%26)
Great motor's iv used  3 of them in model's

I built the original prototype Danny Boy when in league with Frank Hinchliffe in the mid 1990's and used a 1 quid buhler motor direct drive to the 4 blade prop....and it worked just fine..great very slow speed, you could actually see the single revolutions of the prop, and she turned out a good just higher than scale speed to get you out of difficulty.......I sailed her for 4 hours one day with that set up, and the motor didn't even break into a warm sweat, lol

and as with me, no finesse. the motor was stuck to the hull with a wodge of blutack, as others will no doubt have ridiculed me about, {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

No offence intended whatsoever, m'duck, but the problem with suggesting a "£1 Buehler" motor is repeatability. It probably wasn't new for that price - unless it had fallen off a lorry at some time - but what was it exactly? Knowing you it was likely a perfect match for that very big hull but what does poor old Steamshed look for and where does he go to look? Very few Buehlers managed to trickle onto the model market now that our old friend Alastair G has disappeared, and trying to buy a single example from either Buehler or their agents would seem to be a waste of time. The only "model" retailer of big DC brushed motors appears to be Mobile Marine Models, but his website is so lacking in spec for the 'T' motors he sells that I wouldn't use one unless I was duplicating a known installation of one in a known model. At least with the MFA belt-drive lumps you know what you're getting - their website gives full details of size and performance. The 900 Johnsons from Steve Tranter also look pretty useful as they don't rev too highly on 12v.

How do the 850's rate at 2:1 reduction?

I was under the impression they are a bit power
hungry and will eat you out of amp and ohm  ;D

Even with a reduction gearbox they still are power hungry......TBH The 900's that Steve sells will swing a 6ins prop at 6v all day and give you loads of power so why would you use a  gbox...wich is noisy....thats my thought on the matter

you are totally right Dave......bought mine by the dozen in 1992 of a mate in Southport who had a model shop......still using them lol......probable chances of buying now are nil and if you could bet they'd go for around same price as an 850. neil.

No quibbles about the selection of a straight-drive 900 but, just for the record, the MFA units are belt-drives which are far quieter than gearboxes. I would agree with Stavros about the choice of ESC, too (a P93 in this case) - but then again I suppose I'd have to!

Unfortunately out of stock (P93), is the 10a ok, or would I need the 20A ?

Out of stock??!! Scandalous! They make the things on site! A 10A ESC would be plenty with those motors, although I'd go for one of these myself http://www.microgyros.com/ (http://www.microgyros.com/)  They are technically far superior to anything else I've tried and excellent value, too.
A little bird tells me that ACTion have a new prototype brushed motor ESC on test (P108) which will do for pretty much all the usual sizes of motor and batteries. I've also seen a photo (just this morning) of a prototype brushless ESC................  No timescale or prices for either yet.
