Up at 5.00am to attend our local dawn service.
Cloudless skies and the Moon shining down made it even more impressive than usual.

It is bigger here than Remembrance Day and even teenagers are attending the services. Not to mention Will and Kate.
It used to be the only day when the Police turned a blind eye to 2 UP gambling. All the returned soldiers played it!
Sign of the times, it is now legal in every casino in Oz.

I used to teach at Campbell High School in Canberra which was next door to the Museum and War memorial overlooking ANZAC Parade leading to the old Parliament House across the lake.........it was always a moving day when we would take the kids down in line to the memorial on ANZAC day for a memorial service.......so my thoughts are with you all today and to all those who fought at Gallipoli so many years ago.
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

We were at the Anzac Day march in Lismore, together with a large crowd of locals including many younger people, which was good to see. The march was led as usual by the Lismore Pipe band - my neighbour has played the bass drum in the band for over 50 years O0

100 years ago yesterday, 25th April 1915, the ANZACS landed on Gallipoli. 10000 people attended the dawn service on the Gallipoli Peninsular, which we watched live on ABC TV. Over 200,000 people turned out to watch the traditional Anzac Day march in Sydney, this year blessed by fine weather, and we also watched the telecast of that. There were marches and services in just about every town and city throughout Australia and New Zealand, honouring not war itself, but those who fought and died in war, serving their respective countries. May they be remembered with pride forever.
What sometimes tends to be forgotten is that the Turks were only defending their homeland against the foreign invaders and, while allied losses were enormous, the Turks lost about 87,000 men killed. Now, Turks and Aussies, as well as Kiwis, are friends, and the Turks lovingly maintain the Anzac war graves, honouring them as they do their own. Perhaps this is an example of the futility of war?

my wife is out in Australia at the moment visiting family for the first time ever. she went to the parade in Melbourne and said the atmosphere was amazing.

My daughter is in the Australian Defence Force (Army) on deployment in Kuwait for 6 months. She took part in the odarkhundred parade on the beach. I watched the uk one on the BBC. The speech of the Turkish representative. Broke me up. All very emotional.

We will always remember them.
In fact my two sons are in the Bury parade today, one a petty officer with Bury Cadets and the other a Marine Cadet with HMS Dido.
