Title: RTR Tug Southampton - paints?

Hi All
This is my first post so please be gentle.  Just getting back into model boating after many years of monster trucks.

Trying to make some alterations [to my RTR Tug Southampton] and will need to repaint the hull, think it's plastic but not sure so any advice on preparation and what paint to use would be more than helpful.  Varies sites all say different paints and am getting confused what I need is similar colours but a matt hard wearing finish any help much appreciated.
