Title: 6V motor running on 12v battery
Post by: falconerone on May 19, 2014, 04:14:38 pm
I have limited knowledge about motors so here is my question. If a motor is listed as 6v can it be used with a 12v battery? What differences are there if I do this?

It depends on the overall voltage rating of the motor. For example, some motors are quoted with an operating range of say 4-14v while their 'nominal' voltage (at which all the relevant RPM, torque etc values are measured) will be somewhere in between. Running a 6v motor at 12v will double the speed but may cause damage to the bearings. If 12v is outside the manufacturer's given range then best to use either 6v or a different motor.
