Title: ANOTHER ROBBE PT 15 BUILD
Post by: DickyD on July 09, 2007, 05:31:43 pm
Had the kit for over a month but am only just allowed to start it as it was a birthday present so had to wait for birthday.
The first thing I have realized is I might just as well forget the instruction book as the rubbish photos are in the German section only so I could spend most of my time going from the German section to the English section and then to the parts section all to find out what screw is No49 and where does it go.
Also you cant stick to the instructions because for example to fix the motor mounting bulkhead you need to first prepare the main deck and temporarily position it so you can check and make sure you don't distort the hull. They don't tell you this.
So I've thrown the book away apart from the parts list and am now just going to use the drawing although there are some glaring omissions on it.
Also the drawing is about the same size as the floor area of my shed, so I spend a lot of time doing origami.

So far I have trimmed the hull, fixed the rudder assembly, fixed the motor and prop shaft, fixed deck supports [Not enough supplied] and prepared the main deck including extra strengthening.

Bluebirds photos on his build should come in handy [I have copies]  :embarrassed:

Dicky Hi ya

By your build is coming along quick.   Just a point to mention, your centre combing around the access hatch to the motor.  Dont forget to set the width of this combing by part number 92 and part number 89.  Number 92 is the plastic 'U' shaped frame and part number 89 is the aft part of the cabin.  If you have made your combing too wide, you will find it difficult to fit number 89 over.  Part 42 socket head screw steel - these are the motor mounting screws - at least that is what I used them for.  Keep on building my mate.

Installed the electrics today and checked it all out . The rudder servo was behaving most oddly and at one stage the motor started on its own. After about 20 minutes of head scratching I found that if I turned off the light over the bench which was almost touching the Tx aerial everything behaved normally. :-[ :-[
Just love the Overlander speed control, just plug it in and it sets itself up, no hassle.

DickyD,
Just one small thing.
Remember to support the propshaft at the inner end, it will reduce any vibration as per Schutze!!

Thanks Bob all under control. At the moment I am still trying to figure out how I am supposed to get to the rudder servo once the deck is in place. I also need a longer arm on the servo as the rudders hardly move on opposite locks.
Title: Re: Another Robbe PT 15 Build
Post by: Shipmate60 on July 11, 2007, 09:00:16 am
DickyD
You have the actuator on the rudders too far out, if you bring it in by a few holes the rudders will have more throw.
You can also mount the servo between the rudders, or very close to them.
This keeps everything tight!!
Just some options.

Thanks Bob will try moving in a few holes. Cant put servo in the middle as the battery tray goes there.

Well i've sorted out the rudder problem.
The deck is fixed and the hull has been given a few coats of paint.
For the last three days I have been working on the superstructure. This is the nearest I've come to scratch building. The instructions are rubbish and the full size drawing isn't much better. I dont think any two of these PT boats will have been built the same. This is definately not a kit for beginners.
Also a lot of the parts have to be made out of timber and ABS so not strictly speaking a kit.
Still will keep plodding on as it keeps me off the streets.

Looking good Richard, I know what you mean about the instructions though, I would say they are useless but they are not that good ;D ;D ;D.

;D ;D All I can say Dicky is .... after you have finished this model you will have a better understanding of the problems & joys of the scratch builder  ;D  ;D

I only hope the rest of Robbe's kits' instructions are of a higher standard than the ones supplied with this kit  :o :o

It might have been a good idea to have bought ourselves a Tamiya plastic kit and see if we could have put radio into that - it might have been easier.

Done the Tamiya Prince of Wales, King George V, Bismarck , Tirpitz , Missouri , only as static models though.

The Scheutze was easy, clear instructions, plenty of clear photos, no drawing [ didn't need one ] and all the parts ready made and all plastic no timber to seal.  ;D

Today I did the handrails on the superstructure. Instructions once again awful. If Robbes cant describe how to do something they say "do as drawing" even if its not on the drawing.
By the way John I figured out why your whip aerials kept breaking off, look at my photos. ;D

hello there Dicky, keep up the good build - aye there are aerial supports, but, even with these in, if you catch them the wrong way - hey it rips the whole lot out of the superstructure  :-\

keep the pics coming

Started the day full of good intentions but only managed to finish off painting the hull and superstructure as the paint fumes got to me.
Have been looking at the so called instruction book for the next step which is making up the manholes and hatches in the deck. It says make up 3 No 186 manholes as plan. Studied plan for ages and can still only see two. ???

Hi there have a look at the back of boat just under the gun barrel  ;D on the starboard side - one hatch there, after the bridge superstructure on the portside - one hatch there.   One hatch at the bow which is marked 187 and 186.   I think that is it Dicky.

Have sorted out the hatch problem and they are now fixed.
Made up the remaining hatches cupboards and torpedo tubes [remembering that the tubes are handed, eh John] and they are now fixed.
Started fixing the fittings kit, no problem with the instructions, there aren't any.

Bluebird has just given me a ticking off as I haven't put anything on here for a few days.

Well I have completed the stanchions and railings and a few of the small fittings and am now trying to make head or tail of Robbes instructions for making the guns.
They give a plan view, a side view [one side only] and a photo that was taken in the dark with no flash  ???

Yet again Richard another very fine model by yourself.

You should be taking on commission builds next that would keep you busy for ages  ;) ;D

Today I fitted the guns. Just hope they are right because the instructions etc lost something in the translation.
It took 2 days to make them as about the only parts I didn't have to make from the drawings were the gun barrels, the bases and the ammo boxes.

Been offered one already Jay but turned it down as the glue and paint fumes have been affecting me quite badly lately so I'm going to have a break for a while.
Still got my 1970s cabin cruiser refurbishment to finish yet.

More or less finished now. Had it in the paddling pool today and she floats to the water line and is nice and level.
Just got to sort out a blowing fuse problem and make some crew and we can go on the maiden voyage.

I used my last one last weekend,..... funnily enough during DickyD's maiden voyage?!?

BTW, I'm collecting PT15 superstructures.... I've already got one this week!  ;D

Having lost the original superstructure [thanks nipper] I have now completed the boat again.
This time the superstructure is filled with bubblewrap and is fixed with magnetic catches. Actually it is a bit difficult to take it of now when needed.
I shall be trying it out at Setley on Sunday and will hope to get some photos this time before anything else happens,

Hi Jay
Thinking about using the hull that I have to build a pre Vietnam US gunboat but am having trouble getting photos,
Have got both sides and the front but need rear and above.
The ones I need are for PGM 66 or PGM 67.

Hi Russ nobody seems to do 1:40 figures so I went to Toys R Us and bought a bag of plastic soldiers [ 50 for 99p ] and chopped here and there and then painted them. I did the same when I built my Scheutze.  http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2809.80

What motor/battery/speed controller set-up do you have in your PT?

Russ
Title: Re: ANOTHER ROBBE PT 15 BUILD
Post by: DickyD on September 19, 2007, 11:31:31 am
Hi Russ

Mtronics Vision 600 motor

Overlander 50amp speed controller 50amp Forwards & Reverse. (20Amp reverse) with a 20 amp fuse [No set up just plug in and go]

9.6v 4300mah racing pack battery from http://www.component-shop.co.uk/html/batteries.html  [very good price]

Goes like the clappers. Only use half throttle to plane at scale speed.
Get about 30mins continuous running but dont often do that as motor gets a little warm, so have a few breaks. O0

Have just changed the motor to a Deans Marine Kestrel 5, 5 pole motor running on 9.6 V as the Mtronics Vision 600 was too powerful and was running too hot and noisy.
The Kestrel has slightly less power but it only gets warm and you cant hear it running. Still gets on the plane alright and doesn't need suppressing.

Have you thought of water cooling the motor (should look at the build thread more closely)

Then again with a slower motor it will last longer on the water  O0
