Hi,
Just wondering what the best/recommended motor reduction is to turn a tug winch? it will have a speed controller on it for fine control but when its on full wack, i will also need the system to have plenty of torque and it will be run on 12v
Im looking at some of the following - http://www.componentshop.co.uk/motors/dc-geared-motors.html (http://www.componentshop.co.uk/motors/dc-geared-motors.html)

Hi Dan
How much room have you got in the tug?

Its a mobile marine models FT-X so er.... lots!
would rather go down the motor route but open to other suggestions.. You are the tug guy after all! <*<

6:1 seems to work okay.

ok thanks :-))

Just curious, Dan, but what would are you hauling with these winches and how fast do you want the line to be pulled in (in feet per second. or whatever)? The speed and power are directly related to the drum diameter as well as the speed of rotation and gearing ratio/motor torque.

Hi Dave, to be totally honest i dont really know. something scale like but with plenty of torque behind it. if its slower than expected then tough.
Im thinking at Umi suggest either 6:1 or maybe even 11:1 looking at rpm's and stuff.

This might be of no use at all ,I found a web sight that had a formular for drum size in relation to rope size so that the drum would hold the required length of rope for a given rope diameter.
I have been playing around with a zoom motor out of a camara and the film wind motor thy are a bit gutsy

Judging by the speed of the MFA geared motors on my demo board 6:1 on 12v is going to be very fast. Why not chuck out the question under a different heading e.g. Winch speed? You might get the tug towing guys interested.

Hi Dan, why not gut a cordless drill... Low RPM + massive torque & the best bit, a 12v drill from B&Q is less than £15....
