Felt the need to build another warship model but did not want to add to the usual RN and USN vessels that inhabit many UK sailing waters. After a little head scratching, a Japanese "Special Type" destroyer built in the 1920/30's seemed ideal. They were quite impressive vessels when first built and a model ought to look both different and handsome.
Using my favored 1/144 scale and balsa sheet/strip construction the model came out at 32 inches (81 cm) in length and about 3 pounds (1.45 kg) in weight. Powered by a single RE385 motor on 7.2 Volts driving P35 type propeller, the modest current of 1.5 Amps gives a top speed of 5 ft/sec (1.5 m/s).
Handing is smooth and trouble free, well it is provided you do not apply full power astern for too long! One quirk it has is that when turning tightly at high speed, it heels into the turn, clearly due to the force on the rudder. This is not in any way dangerous and adds a little to the different nature of the model when sailing.

Derek,
The rudder is over scale and directly behind the propeller. This ensures good handling even in the worst conditions.
The inward heel effect is not unknown, some of the early TBD's exhibited this characteristic. It can also be observed on other models, sudden application of full rudder starts the model heeling inwards, then inertia takes over and heels it outwards, but you have to look carefully to spot this effect.

A Fubuki class DD is it Glynn? 6x5" guns;9x 24" long lance torpedoes in three triple mounts.

The "Fubuki" was the lead vessel of the first group of Special Type destroyers, there being three groups in all. To ease access into to the hull, I based this model on the second group.
Not being a model of a specific vessel, the name "Kirisame" is fictitious but in keeping with the naming of IJN warships.

Hi GG, are we likely to see this plan sometime soon in Model Boats?
I am currently building your Ogdenburgh ferry, nearly done, I managed to get a set of vehicles mainly left hand drive on ebay, looking forward to finishing her.

I wonder how I missed this! It shows you need to visit every few days to keep up with all that goes on here.
I have been reading about destroyers recently and saw that they were quite ahead of their time. I recall the turrets making the classes a bit top heavy but they were tooled up!
Lovely model Glynn, I can see a few of these being built in the coming years.
