Dear All,
Does anyone happen to know the names of the real life ships used in this film? Were they the originals? - I am not quite sure about this.

HMS Achilles played by herself (INS Delhi)
HMS Exeter played by HMS Jamaica
HMS Ajax played by HMS Sheffield
Admiral Graf Spee played by USS Salem
HMS Cumberland (which joined after the main battle) played by herself
HMS Battleaxe and HMS Birmingham were used as camera ships.

I thought Ajax looked too much like a Town Class! - Bridge S.structure shape etc.. Thankyou for the thorough info., very interesting... will copy/paste and print out for future ref..

Thankyou. All info. is useful info.! I had looked up this film to watch again the other day as it has some good clear pictures of an Admirals Barge. I have three of these to paint for my Belfast Project, and wanted to reconfirm colour schemes. While watching, I just noticed Ajax looked rather Town Class and needed opinion out of curiosity. I believe Ajax hadn't gone to the breakers at the time this film was made, and I wonder why they didn't use the real her? (my Mother has a very nice 'official piece' of HMS Ajax - with engraved plate - from the breakers).

Unless you know exactly what ships were used in any particular film, movies are not the most reliable detail source. The fact that HMS Ajax was still active does not mean that she was available for movie duty, and for media people, any grey ship is much like any other grey ship. That was true then, and is still true today. Have a look at anything historical on the History channels - any clip involving any ship/plane/tank, however inappropriate, will do to fill the pictorial background while the narrator mis-reads his script.
The models used for the RN based movies of the time were usually superb, so it could be done.

There was a programme on last week or so in which a guy explained that he'd come to the UK on the Mauretania after the war - cue picture of the 1907 four stacker instead of the 1939 version!
