Title: hull frames
Post by: hobbyman on July 13, 2007, 03:49:35 pm
I have just got hold of a plan for a tug ,on the pfofile the base is graduated -0  to 38 increments of 2,and the frames are numbered PD, 91/2,9 ,81/2 ,8, 7, 6, 5,     5,4, 3, 2 ,11/2,1, 1/2, pr ,has anyone any idea how to position the frames using these numbers ,i have never used just a plan before to build a scale model ,if anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated ,

hi there

Sometimes in plans they draw in what are known as 'half frames' this is normally at the bow and stern because the actual shape of the hull changes shape in more than one plane.

With the aid of half frames, it helps to predict and produce a better hull shape.

Ive included a 'scraggy' drawing to help explain.   Hope this is of some help.

Thanks bluebird
I have done a lot of measuring and that is what i have come up with like your drawing ,maybe have to make a couple more frames to suit the gaps ,it looks complicated till you have an idea what is going on  ,your explaination helps a lot, now i know whays going on ,

Do the frames only go up to 9 1/2?

Because I have run into issues where the frames are numbered as sections and don't relate to the feet/meters on the profile. The sections are laid out on the lines plan, which you may not have. You may be able to convert them, like say if a frame section is 2 feet wide.

Hi admhawk
yes the frames only go up to 9 1/2,except the pd whatever that is, i have managed to locate the positions on the frame by measurement on the profile and the pd is the bow and the pr is the stern ,but the frames are not equidistant in layout ,it does seem to come out like bluebirds drawing ,i can now sort out and make the missing frames up from it ,the frame numbers do not seem to be related to the keel numbers at all.

PLEASE do Not confuse "frame" drawings with "section" drawings. They are incompatible.
Frames are what the ship is built with. (about 2' apart). Section drawings are originally done by the designers to give a "fair" idea of what the hull will look like. In general, for modelling purposes, go with the section drawings unless they have been radically altered.
