Title: Frosty's Schnellboot S-100 by Italeri 1/35 with RC Conversion
Post by: diverfrost on September 07, 2014, 09:37:51 am
Hi All and thanks for the welcome,
First ever boat build…so here goes :o
This is a list of what I envisage on doing (In no particular order)
Motors - 3x 15T 540’s, all speed control can be modified via my Transmitter – Turnigy 9X.
Servo operated tube doors by 2x micro 9g.
Rudders linked and run by a metal gear servo.
Lighting – port, starboard, bow stern, interior lights and control panels – all 3mm LED’s clear/color and diffused with Evergreen Styrene.
Rotation on the three gun emplacements via micro servo’s
Being and RC Tanker and love noise I’ll be adding sound as well.
Powered by either a 7.4v 2S or an 11.1v 3S Lipo, I’ll set it up so when the voltage alarm flashes/sounds I’ll kill the two outer props and bring her in on the center prop.
The only parts I’m unsure of at the moment are the in boat rudder shafts, Props and shafts.
Wish me luck, I won’t bore you all with step by step build pictures, I’ll just pop pictures up of the above if anyone is interested.

Hi Greg,

A step, by step, build would not be boring far from it O0 O0

They all make, interesting and informative reading/viewing :-)) :-))

Greg,
3 x 15t 540 motors does seem rather excessive.

I would like to know the mechanism by which you plan to open the tube doors as I am considering this for my 1/24 S100, so any ideas would be welcome as I haven't progressed the design of the opening mechanism as yet so I'm quite happy to lean on other's ideas.

Yeah it is, though a good way to ensure that the motors aren't screaming at full capacity.
i'd rather reach the speeds I want with out peaking the motors to get there.

Greg,
1 of those motors will be excessive on 7.2 volts for that hull.
Plus they can stall in excess of 90 amps each so will have to be individually fused or a huge capacity ESC used.
If it was mine I would research those already converted and see what others have used.
3 small "screamers" on fine pitch small props would be fine for this model to plane.

Thanks Bob,
Your advice is appreciated and i'll take it into consideration.

Hey Deadbeat,
while "researching" how I wanted to build mine I came across a few YouTube clips on how some others have working tube doors.
just put in Schnellboot S-100 and they will all come up.
Here is how one was done but i'm going to try something different.

That setup looks good but a little excessive for such a small feature

If your referring to the YouTube link I provided I agree, hence the reason i'm going to use a micro servo each so all that's needed is an arm on each door pin connected via push rod to the servos on either side, nice and simple

Yes I was.... while it looks impressive it seems overkill to me.  As you say a couple of micro servos will do the job.
maybe even some of these:-

I have had very little to do with PE parts in the past and don't have any specific tools to fold or roll with so I just used my side cutters that as you know are to a V so perfect for folding, The shank on screwdrivers vary in dia with their size so I used my medium sized Phillips head with a 6mm dia shank for rolling the helmet holders and I think it's come out ok.
Had to re work my bench too just to fit all the gear on it  :o  I live in a two story town house so there is just a small corner down stairs near the back door I can use....can't wait to buy a house next year!!!

Just a little about me too, I'm a fabrication engineer welder 1st class by trade and specialized in S/S and aluminium fabrication, Did about 5 years of plate boat building of mono and twin hulls with asymmetrical tunnel which gave the twin hull the lean in and turning circle of a mono, plus of course general jobbing work.
Now a wardsmen at a hospital  :D :D

Thanks for the link to open the doors its a cute method but as you say a bit complicated. The problem is that they don't seem to open at scale speed they need to be a bit slower I wonder whether Action's Servomorph would help here and with the micro servo method.

Hi Deadbeat,
Servo speed control looks like it will be needed to get it to scale for sure, I haven't herd of Servomorph before but will check it out.
what I have used in the past is a nice little regulator by Turnigy and does a superb job for under $10 AUD.
have a look and see what you think. i'll "Google" servomorph  :-) :-) :-)

Love the detail so far assembled. The idea of having the torpedo tube doors open is inspired, now you just need to make or acquire the torpedos!

A company in the States make and sell tubes and powered torpadoes.

My brother built a 1/24 S38 class and he made the torpedoes fire. They were spring loaded with the torpedo release by servo. They pushed the doors open on firing. The torpedoes were wood and were on a longish tether secured to the torpedo tube and after firing were pulled into the side of the hull, with the boat at speed they were difficult to see them being towed alongside.
I've recently refurbished this boat.

I love the camouflage! It shows you do not have to limit your palette to grey:O)

Most e-boats serving in the Baltic had some sort of camo, this particular boat represents a boat from the 5th S Boot Flotilla.

I agree 100%.  love reading build threads.  I always learn a new trick or two.  Hope you do post a thread.

That Camo is very nice indeed!

Well Here is what I have done for the tube doors, they work with minimal effort of building.
I had some collars in my stash of goodies so i drilled out some spare micro servo arms and fit to the tube door pins which are 1.5mm.
The copper wire is just for testing and i'll use some better fittings later.
My servo bracket will be removable as well just to be sure, I glued a tapping block either side for complete removal.

Thanks for posting that it is a very simple solution which I shall use.

On the subject of camo I am yet to find evidence that the S100 types were ever camouflaged (if they were it was just a temporary measure for transit purposes). They were all schnellbootweiss, boring I know but there you are! matching that colour is difficult with ready made up paints, there isn't even a RAL number to compare with, I used a very pale grey as the backing to the camo in the photo I posted. White Ensign Models do sell a schnellbootweiss in tinlets but on a 1/24 model which is 57" long I'd need a mortgage to pay for the paint.

Glad you like,All the documentation I've collected so far is the same regarding any type of camouflage too.
As for painting her i'm going to use the AK Acrylic set #559 and play with the grey's a bit if need be.
Even though it's two tones of grey i'll be weathering her a bit  :D :D  with some combat damage - see the attached as reference.

But have to concentrate on finishing the build first!  :o
