Here we go, boys n' girls...say Hello to ''Dundee'', he's just landed in the UK from the good old US of A. Should look quite good out on the lake, I think...what say you?
Rich

Nice!.... Water doesn't look too realistic though..... :P
-
Great project.
Is all the power/control going to be in the head and see how the rest follows or have you something else in mind?

{-) "something else in mind" Get it - "In Mind"!!! {-)
-
Martin...I worry about you, I really do. ;D
Alex...the r/c will be in a small OtterBox, mounted the same as on my swan, and fitted under the head section. The other two sections are connected via a short length of chain, and just follow the head with a nice 'wiggly' movement.

Dundee gets his first paddle in UK waters...

RE: Is all the power/control going to be in the head...is`nt that where it always is {-)

I've known people who couldn't say 'yes' to that, Frank...

Hi Rich...
Milbourn had better watch out he does`nt end up as Dundees Dinner. ;D
Frank

Note to oneself...do not let the postman come in the door tomorrow morning. ;D

I am thinking of putting flashing red leds in the eyes, Martin..

Will this be going down Princes Park in Eastbourne?
Please tell me yes, I have to be there to see people's reactions.
-
Very doubtful, TC...it's salt water, and I don't like sailing subs in salt water. However, it will be a regular (I hope...) at the other lake, Hailsham Common Pond...the idea is to get there early and leave Dundee lurking in the reeds, then fetch him out when everyone is sailing and talking, and see what happens. A dog or two walking around the shoreline would be good...
Rich
-
Fresh water only, the Loch Ness tourist board was wondering..... %)
-
If it were twice the size, then yes...Dundee would look great on the Loch. Maybe I should do a LN Monster next. %)
Or maybe not....
Rich
-
see you in the Spring 2015 then ok2
-
Whats Dundee's dimensions and how is he propelled please Rich.
-
Hang on fella...I'll go measure him.
Rich
-
Jeesh..thats all you need in Oz , another Croc :o
-
Ok...vital statistics are as follows:
Head section...10.5''
Centre section...10''
Tail section...10.5''
Overall length (including chain joiners)...35''
Maximum width (centre section)...6''
He will be propelled along by a small cylinder, or a small OtterBox, depends on which fits the best, 50mm diameter x 240mm length, clipped under the head section. The cylinder will contain the motor, rudder servo, esc, rx and battery. The head will be the power section, the other two sections follow along behind with a very realistic (and seductive :o ) movement.
Rich
(ps...he's an alligator, not a crocodile!)
-
There's none in the southern states thinking of scaring the hell out of a few folks at the rowing champs. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
Thanks Rich did you carve him or buy him?
-
I got him via eBay from an American seller...

Alligator Dundee does not sound right. Are you sure he is not a crocodile? Isn't it something to do with teeth?
I have never understood why T Rex and family are so popular all those teeth and running around as well.

To me, they are all the same...if they are hungry, and you are in the way, then whether it be an alligator, crocodile, kaiman or a dinosaur, unless you can run VERY fast, you are in heap big trouble.
And anyway, the seller described it as an alligator... ;D

Croc/gator who cares, nasty ***gers. I see they are available on THAT auction site and a bigger (head only) at 28" . I saw a hippo head too but cant find it again. Lots of frogs, lizards and creepy crawlies for your fish pond or to animate ! Search for "floating-alligator-head-decoy-with-reflective-eyes-for-pond-water-pool"

There's also this:
Rich

Oh YES ! Vac-form ? Rubbery? Details please. Is it on your worktop ???? :o
-
Calm down man, calm down! Remember the blood pressure!!
It's a scratch built, all fibreglass, job, by some guy in the States, I just happened to stumble across the photos of it.

Maybe no, but they can count the bawbees :P

I am puzzled, how did they either get the croc to keep still or hold it down for long enough to get the mould?

Just been having a ponder as to how to get Dundee mobile...courtesy of VNK, I have a tiny (as in very tiny) esc and a servo for the rudder, I have a motor ready, so as soon as the tube for the cylinder (or the OtterBox, depends on what I decide to use) I can make a start on figuring out what will go where. All I need now is a battery, and that will depend on how much room I have to play with.
And before anyone says anything, I'm going to try using my Planet 2.4gHz radio...I need to see for myself if it will work or not.
Rich
-
cool :-))
-
The OtterBox has just turned up...I think this may be a better bet than a cylinder, everything fits nicely. Might have a trial fitting thisarvo...
Rich
-
And so it begins...
I used the Otter Box in the shark, so after much pondering, and some extremely useful information from an old friend of mine ( Gantu ), I've decided to fit the radio/motor/battery/esc inside the head. I'll be fitting a one piece alloy flange around the sides with a dozen or so M4 bolts/nuts, and a clear Lexan top...the same as a sub's watertight box.
A trial fitting proves that everything will fit ok...in case you're wondering, the rudder and the prop shaft will be fitted through the Lexan top and attached to the servo rod/motor coupling with some of Andy's (username on here : tattooed) magnetic fittings.
Tea is next up, then I'll be off to give my flexible friend some serious stick on Cornwall Model Boats website... ;D

I knocked up a rough template out of styrene to test fit everything, and surprisingly enough, it all fits ok. The actual plate is on order, a 3mm clear styrene sheet, which everything will be mounted on as it is in the pics. Battery fits over the prop shaft exit, a 7.4v lipo pack.
So far...so good.
Rich
-
Clear top now sorted out and radio fitted. I knew it was going to be a bit of a tight squeeze, but I didn't realise quite how tight...and there's still the battery pack to get in there somewhere.
I love a challenge... >>:-(
Rich
-
Still to do list...
The fibreglass sheet for the internal flange should be here tomorrow, so that's the first job on the list.
Andy is sending me the material for the sealing gasket, that should be here in a day or two.
I still need to get the 3mm brass bolts/nuts/washers to secure the lid down.
I need to measure the space I have left over for the battery pack and get that ordered, then make up a tray for it.
I need to make a quick access hatch to enable me to get at the on/off switch.
Oh, and seal the prop shaft exit.
And this was supposed to be a quick job inbetween building the shark and the swan.... :embarrassed:
Rich
-
How about hanging the battery underneath in its own dedicated box, hatch downwards, wired through an epoxy seal into the head. Easy access and keeps the weight low..you also dont need to break your main seals too often.
-
Hmm...thinking outside the box, eh? (see what I did there...clever, huh?)
Something like this, skip?
Rich
-
Yup, better box though!
