I have partially built the Graupner paddle tug called GLASGOW.
It was started in 2010 and kept being put aside for other projects over the years. I have been doing some more work on it this week but have to admit defeat, so it is now up for sale in the 'Sales' section. Here follows a 'Mini Blog' along with the trials and tribulations and comments about the design and building problems.
It looked a good idea at the time but has taken 4 years to reach the deck level which has still not been secured down. :((
Here is the 'Box' picture and the bare hull, which is made from plastic and all wobbly.
-
The paddle wheels recommended connecting together with rivets, but I decided to use lock nuts and bolts so as to be able to adjust the tension of the pivoting paddles.
-
Following the 'Script' faithfully, it was advised to make the internal frame complete and insert it into position.
Of course, this resulted in a very poor fit indeed so several 'mods' were incorporated to make it fit.
-
Here is the plans and trying to fit the internal frame.
-
Next we come to the rudder. This was a pleasure to build (even though it was hollow plastic shapes) and fitted well and even connected up to the servo beautifully.
-
Now we come to the FUN part ........ Fitting the Paddles.
-
First we undercoated the hull.. The internal structures are still not secured at this stage.
-
I don't have many pictures of the detailed stages as i was concentrating on getting it all to fit but here is few of the progress.
-
The deck came in ONE complete layer and required exact fitting to sit correctly into the hull.
-
Starting to lay the parts on but not yet tackled the Paddle drive system.....More later.....and later.... and later.
-
We invested in geared motor and some gear wheels for the paddle drive shaft mechanism. The 'Outriders...for a better word, were constructed.
The steering servo was connected up and admired. Very nice layout here.
-
The paddles were connected and tested lovely for rotation and speed. The Hull was sprayed in two tone red and black.
-
The deck was placed over and all the trimmings placed on top for effect.
We are now into year one ??
-
serious errors now became apparent when the Paddle boxes were tried for size.
Due to blindly following the instructions,,,,,, they didn't fit, and the redesigning necessary was just too much, so the model was shelved three years ago.
-
We started recently on the re-design and attempted to complete the old girl. To this end, the Paddle platforms were removed and scrapped. A new set has been constructed and re-positioned so that the Paddle boxes fit beautifully.
The wheels were connected to a 12 volt battery and we watched with some pleasure whilst having a celebratory cuppa tea.
Due to sitting in the loft it has accumulated some dust and the paintwork looks a little tired. I now have no enthusiasm to continue so I wondered if anyone else would like to finish her off.
Please visit the sales section if you fancy a bargain.
Cheers

Looking good Ken! :-))

Thanks Martin. She is a nice looker but I did have a few issues with Mr Graupner and his speedy assembly system. {-)
The Ship is now sold in less time than it took to write this blog. Let's hope the new owner continues the Blog and we can all see her paddling across the lake.
Cheers
