Title: Aquacraft Bristol Bay conversion.
Post by: rob on October 08, 2014, 12:36:55 pm
i cannot find any reference to this ready built model here on the forum, so I thought I might add my attempt at modifying one.
Howes Models seem to have a few left at around £160 ish, just add your own Tx and Rx, and the 7.2v NiMH battery pack.
The ESC, rudder servo, 540 size motor, 3 blade metal prop and lights all included.
Out of the box I found no damaged items, very well packed for its trip across various waters.
The Hull is superb ! Glass cloth and very well made, the underside of the garish glossy deck planking the same.
I think it's around 1/20 scale, but with an oversize bit here and there.
Nicely painted, again in garish gloss.

What is it going to be ?
Well my next big build is to be the Soviet BK 1124 Bronekater (tank boat) in 1/16, this has many many rivets and weld lines showing in typical soviet fashion from WW2............ So, as a practise for that
This one will be a 'soviet armed coastal boat of the BS1 class' complete with welds, rivets and other soviet paraphernalia .
Anyone googling BS1 class will have to think sideways and think what the initials stand for.
Pics to follow the build.
Anyone considering the Bristol Bay as a Sunday morning floater, do not be put off by the foreign manufacture. . . . . It really is a nice little, well built model, though I'm told the ESC may well need changing.

Tell me about it! I'm battling with the welds and rivets as we speak. How about converting the Bristol Bay into a;

Christian you are a mind reader.
I did think of that in 1/24, but found 1/16 weapons fits more readily available so switched it to a smaller version !

Hi Rob.
First thing I did was to replace the "titanic sized" anchors with ones a bit more to scale.
The turn buckles are solid and dont turn. The cabin is made from layers of ply sheet and if you look the end grain has `nt been painted or sealed. The hatch gratings are open no use if the rain comes on I sealed them with clear fix to make them look glazed.

Frank, thanks for the additional post.
The anchors. . . . I'm going to keep them for when I build a 13 foot galleon lol.
Yes the end grain does stick out a bit, but the cabin has been consigned to the spares and odds and ends bin.
Did you keep the original ESC ?

Thanks Frank,
Mine has gained a new armoured citadel with gun mount, new stern, amidships cut down with a rail, and a few other mods. Awaiting a couple of guns from Germany and Hong kong.
I know a post without pictures is no good whatsoever, all in good time.

Yes, remarkably similar, but captured by the soviets and modified.

 Hi Rob.
I have noted that a number of the Graupner "Elkes" transmogrify into KFK vessels.

Thanks Christian, me an iPads don't get on with posting pics.
A bit of weathering needed.
This is my conversion. Comments welcome good or bad.

Excellent, a planked tank that floats :-)) . As mentioned above, a bit of armour style weathering will set this off nicely.

Thankyou Christian, don't know what my problem with iPad and photo bucket is, apart from Luddite tendencies and old age .

Thankyou unbuilt, I think it makes it a better model, still to put BS1 on the front. . . In Cyrillic script of course.

In case you haven't come across us yet, a few of us Soviet gunboat fans have started a Soviet Gunboats group on Facebook to collaborate on making parts for the BK & G-5 classes. Its called  & is a public group so anyone who is interested in modeling the subject is free to join. I'm getting one of the new MTB hulls myself & hope to start on it within the next month or two

Finally got away from building other boats to give BS1 her maiden float at Collett Park with the Drifters MBC . Ballasted down to a more realistic line, the standard fitted 555 motor gave a scale speed of around 350 knots ( the same as another unmolested and original version) and a 3700 NmH at 7.2 v ran for over 1.5 hours with no discernable loss of speed, . . . . Very nice. The standard supplied speed controller was progressive and didn't get warm, neither did the motor. ( to be fair, I was running at around 25% throttle most of the time)
Excellent tight turning circle, hopeless at turning going astern of course, but all in all a very nice little boat. . . The standard version that was there performed just the same, but could do with a bit of ballast in standard trim.
So if you want a no fuss intro to the world of model boating, or an easy going Sunday morning boat. . . . Find a 'Bristol Bay'. . . . . Molest it if you must, but it looks quite nice in standard, as supplied form. . . . . . . . . But dump the anchors !
