Jan has been tucked away in a uninsulated attic for 10 years and needs a complete overhauling.
The tug weighs 18-19 kg and the existing hull (ABS plastic)could not handle the weight , now the hull is reinforced with three layers of fiberglass.
Before JAN was in Switzer livery. This time it will be original colors, from the time the tug was owned by Petersen & Alpers in Hamburg,

My way to do planks. the Black is from ABS plastic sheet.
-
almost done.
-
After laying the planks stern, I have chosen to do the same amidships below the tow hook and on the upper deck over the wheelhouse.
-
Very effective planking.
Looks very neat.

Thank you Ned. :-)

Alan......
1. were you annealing the brass [1/16" diameter] wire? before bending @ 90 degrees for the port light protection bars
2. what type of wood glue did you use for the construction of the rope storage box's......[which look very square & neat :-))]
Derek
-
Thank you Guys. %%
1. I don't know the word annealing. But I hope this is the answers you want. No i do not warm it up before bending,
2 The glue is on waterbase for outdoor, thin with water 1: 5. uploading Picture later in the day.
-
This is some of the glue i use. the orange one is Water resistant and get clear when it dryes up.
-
the finished work before clear coating
-
Annealing is softening the brass before forming. Heat to required temp then let it cool again. Brass becomes more malleable.

There is some very outstanding work you have done here. I love the idea of the pipe bender made from skate bearings.

Just have to agree on what's been said here, fantastic work in all respects!

First display outside Al“s Shipyard after 5 months of recovery.

It was nearly two-month break, not because I have been lazy, but spring was suddenly at the door and the house, garden and the wife cried for attention.
A few of the great evenings went up in "The Provencale outdoor country kitchen" and good barbecue on the terrace. :-))
Holidays and quality time with family and friends takes too hard on the construction hours. {:-{
May is not the month to which I had devoted the launching of Jan, but there are many more may to take of, thank God. ok2
A vacation in New York is approaching. will stay close to Central Park and nap me if I do not visit the local model sailing club resident there. :-)
-
Allan, your work is stunning. Keep the pics coming.
Regards,
Dennis
-
Wonderful details!!!
-
mightily impressive work.........beautiful. :-))
-
such wonderful attention to detail. You must be very proud of JAN.
-
I decided to paint the hull indside in three colors to get some contrast and something nice to look at.
Within painting I put everything in the hull and mark up the places where the parts will be glued, and covered with tape.
Princip picture which gives an indication of the arrangement of electrical parts, etc.
Port: Speed control , drain pump and contact for the drain pump.
Amidships: smoke generator and receiver.
Starboard: sound generator, pump for engine cooling and servo for the rudder.
-
The fastidious attention to detail and the beauty of the finish even on the inside of the hull which generally nobody sees is superb, makes me realise how far I have to go to reach that standard, if I have enough years left :((.
Thanks for sharing your work with us. Chris G

Alan....you must have some very good scale workers to keep the engine room & bilges so clean O0
When you say "drain pump and contact for the drain pump" do you mean that this is to represent engine cooling water?....as I am sure such a build would not take on water >>:-(....
Keep posting images ...we love them........... Derek

Have had Nixon in the closet for 10 years without knowing it!
I was a very different place when I read your message.
now I understand.
Ps. It hurts so much when I laugh.

That would make a brilliant vignette on its own! Are they stock figures or did you convert them?

Absolutely amazing work. I am in awe of this model workmanship.

All the figures are from Preiser (Germany). http://www.preiser-figuren.de/
Preiser manufactures mainly figures for model trains of all sizes. those in the pictures are in the 1:22,5 They fit very well to my modelboat i 1:25
I buy mine at this address. https://www.lindenberg-modellbahn-koeln.de/ (The site is in German). They have allmost everything in figures at all sizes.
They are already painted when I buy them. These guys I'll change and paint to match the years 1952-1955. (steam era). (JAN is build in1952).
Ps. Preiser also have clothing and tools for the figures (See Pictures).
