Title: Arun Wheelhouse
Post by: gribeauval on November 06, 2014, 09:33:16 pm
Now the Thames plug build for Neil is over it's time to update one of my other projects that has been running at the same time.

I was asked to build a new superstructure complete with a full interior, lights, wipers etc for a 1/12th scale Arun Class Lifeboat to replace the one that came with the model as it was incorrect for the boat the client wanted to depict. The early Aruns had a rounded front and sharply angled front windows and the moulding as supplied was of this early type. The later Aruns had a much squarer front and this was the one needed.

First problem was that the new wheelhouse had to fit the existing coamings of the hull. This hole was duly measured and a building board made to the dimensions.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Build-board-01_zpsa54f0980.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Build-board-01_zpsa54f0980.jpg.html)

What was to be the floor was then cut and made to fit with a small allowance to make removal easier.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-001_zps6045aab6.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-001_zps6045aab6.jpg.html)

The access hatches to the lower areas of the hull were made and fitted in place. These are non-opening as they can't be reached when the wheelhouse is complete.

Rear hatch that gives access to the engine room.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Floor-01_zpsc8355b96.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Floor-01_zpsc8355b96.jpg.html)

Front hatch that gives access to the forward survivors cabin.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Floor-02_zpsefff1b79.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Floor-02_zpsefff1b79.jpg.html)

The removable floor panels that allowed the engines to be removed on the full size boat were positioned.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Floor-03_zpsfd9fabfc.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Floor-03_zpsfd9fabfc.jpg.html)

Overall view of the floor.

Start on the walls next.

The drawings for the correct sides were scaled up and marked out on the 2mm mdf (my prefered building medium but needs to be correctly sealed to keep water at bay!)
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-002_zpsa2e573bd.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-002_zpsa2e573bd.jpg.html)

Raised around the floor in the correct position to allow other parts to be fitted.
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-003_zps7fed2285.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-003_zps7fed2285.jpg.html)
The front rope lockers cut and fitted.
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-004_zps64672bb6.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-004_zps64672bb6.jpg.html)

Windows and recesses cut out and the roof cut to size.
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-005_zps1d73335f.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-005_zps1d73335f.jpg.html)

All glued together EXCEPT the roof as the interior need to be made first!!
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-006_zpsc023fd4d.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-006_zpsc023fd4d.jpg.html)

The three front lockers will hold the switches in either side and the battery packs in the centre.

The position of the upper helm position has been plotted on the roof of the wheelhouse.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-013_zps7c45e5f0.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-013_zps7c45e5f0.jpg.html)
The base moulding for the steering position was plotted onto a spare board and made by steaming a timber strip to the correct shape.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-014_zps555e18ca.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-014_zps555e18ca.jpg.html)
Whilst this strip was setting to shape a base piece was glued onto the wheelhouse roof.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-015_zps52dc57ee.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-015_zps52dc57ee.jpg.html)
Base moulding added to the roof .

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-016_zpsc2dbae50.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-016_zpsc2dbae50.jpg.html)
The access panels that correspond to the ones inside the wheelhouse have been added.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-017_zpsbbb0afa7.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-017_zpsbbb0afa7.jpg.html)
The steering position has been built with many vertical planks of varying shape and size to give the rounded, tapered shape.

Should be Mick as Kenneth Thelwall had the same "squared off" front as Elizabeth Ann.

The interior has had beams fitted to represent the stiffening inside the wheelhouse. These are hollow to allow the wiring for the lighting to be concealed.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-020_zpsf39cdd8d.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-020_zpsf39cdd8d.jpg.html)
The front supports are also hollow to allow the wiring to be directed towards the lower edge of the front lockers.

The positions for the deck lights on each side of the superstructure have been plotted, cut out and the lights (very thin white smds) bonded in place.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-050_zps57269086.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-050_zps57269086.jpg.html)
All wired up and working.

A start has been made on the interior fittings.

First up is the seven identical crew seats. One was made and before assembly the seat and back were used to make a silicone rubber mould to allow the set to be cast and hopefully they will all come out the same.
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-033_zps203fcda6.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-033_zps203fcda6.jpg.html)

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-029_zps84d0a3bd.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-029_zps84d0a3bd.jpg.html)

The bases were made from styrene sheet, rod and odd metal bits.
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-037_zpsecfd246c.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-037_zpsecfd246c.jpg.html)

Now we have a set of seven identical seats.
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-040_zps6c72d2fb.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-040_zps6c72d2fb.jpg.html)

Temporarily positioned to check the clearances are OK.

I must admit that after the Thames is nice to be doing interiors again for a while. ;)

Next on the agenda is the radar scope. This is made from styrene sheet with the surround added using a large eyelet from a canvas repair kit after a little filing to shape.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-044_zps13085cec.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-044_zps13085cec.jpg.html)

Assembled and details added.

Painted and ready to fit.

Fixed in position and wired up. This will be illuminated whenever the radar scanner on the mast is operating.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-047_zps01da1cf1.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-047_zps01da1cf1.jpg.html)

Next in line is a representation of the main engineers panel. This again is styrene with a photo reproduction (courtesy of Photoshop) of a panel on the front face.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-055_zpsd2bfd935.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-055_zpsd2bfd935.jpg.html)

Fixed in place of the Port side table and its little secret revealed...... fibre optics to add interest.

That's the indoor workshop (spare bedroom) Derek !!  You should see the outside one with all the saws etc it looks like a bomb site most of the time.

Next installment is the radio stack for the Port table next to the Engineers panel. This was made from wooden blocks covered with styrene and again a reproduction of the full size radio sets on the front plus odds and sods from the "usefull junk" box.

Next the Pyrogen fire suppresion system board.

This is also located on the Port side table between the radios and the mechanics main panel.

Thanks gents, just doing what I enjoy.  ;)

Added some detail parts for the navigator. The maps are of Holyhead Harbour and Anglesey as this wheelhouse is for the Holyhead boat. The rulers, pencils and clipboard are for when the electronics give up the ghost and he has to rely on brains and Mark One Eyeball !!

It's only practice (50 years worth). There is nothing complicated in what I do, it's just a matter looking at how to break items down to very simple shapes stuck together to give me the finished part, plus not rushing about wanting things done yesterday.

Glad you all like it so far.

At the rear of the wheelhouse is kept a basket stretcher, normally stowed against the cabin wall BUT I wanted it in the ready for use position so a suport frame was made and fixed to the floor.

The basket stretcher was made and strapped in place.

The air intake trunking on the back wall was made along with the filter panels that fit on the outside on either side of the door.

Bringing thing up to date......

Most lifeboats have a mascot on board. Usually either a teddy bear or a knitted crewman. I usually chose to give the boat a teddy bear as in this case.

1" high teddy as purchased from a car boot sale for 50p.

Spent the past couple of days trying to burn off the ends of my fingers again!!

This time it was building the mast for the Arun. A pair of side sections were made from brass tube. Tube was used to reduce weight and allow the wiring to be threaded up the legs for the radar and mast lighting.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-093_zps6d01b271.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-093_zps6d01b271.jpg.html)
The two sections were then joined using a solder with a lower melting point, to prevent the whole thing falling apart, to produce the basic lower structure.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-094_zps44e306b6.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-094_zps44e306b6.jpg.html)
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-095_zps71c6a1b2.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-095_zps71c6a1b2.jpg.html)
The upper mast section was cut from sheel brass and again soldered using different melting point solders.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-096_zpsf622fa29.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-096_zpsf622fa29.jpg.html)
The two sections were joined using a third, lower melting point solder.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-097_zpsf3c717b5.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-097_zpsf3c717b5.jpg.html)
The top aerial section was made as a separate unit and glued into the top tube, the whole mast given a coat of primer and then a coat of white.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-098_zps9b986a28.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-098_zps9b986a28.jpg.html)
This will be fixed in place when the wheelhouse upper deck is fixed in place.

The wheelhouse upper deck has been glued in place ( Gorilla WHITE glue, just as strong but no foaming to deal with) and the wires threaded through from the conduit beams to the top surface.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-099_zps68f5790b.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-099_zps68f5790b.jpg.html)
Now the glue is dry all the windows and doors have been sealed over to prevent dust getting inside.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-100_zpsb945bd3e.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-100_zpsb945bd3e.jpg.html)
Whilst waiting for the glue to dry I made the radar scanner unit. This is built around a micro servo which has been modified to rotate continuously when switched on.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-101_zps6457bbed.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-101_zps6457bbed.jpg.html)
Fitted onto the main platform of the mast ready for wiring up.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-102_zpse1ac085e.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-102_zpse1ac085e.jpg.html)
I have also made the D/F loop from heavy duty electrical single strand copper wiring, wound into rings and soldered together.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-103_zps41ceda88.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-103_zps41ceda88.jpg.html)
Painted and mounted on the upper mast platform.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-104_zps0aa5e988.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-104_zps0aa5e988.jpg.html)

Had some flu type bug over the past couple of days so not felt like doing much.

However the mast now has working radar, mast head navigation light, upper deck illumination light and flashing blue light.

This will be fixed in place and mated with the wiring already fitted when the outside of the wheelhouse is done.

Back to work on the Arun wheelhouse.

The hatch covers on the front bins that will hide the batteries and the switches for the functions in the wheelhouse have been made and are now ready for detailing.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-107_zps7a9516d8.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-107_zps7a9516d8.jpg.html)

All the masking tape that was keeping the dust out of the wheelhouse has been removed and replaced with thin brown parcel tape. This will leave a much smaller "step" in the paint when the strucutre is sprayed, first with white primer then the orange.

The weather was perfect for spraying today with nice warm sunshine and most importantly NO WIND !!

This allowed me to give the wheelhouse two coats of white primer, it was brought indoors into the warmer air to allow the paint to flash off between coats.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-109_zps07292177.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-109_zps07292177.jpg.html)
In fact the weather was so good I even managed to give it one of the three coats of orange late in the afternoon. It will now be left for 24 hours before the final coats are done. Then it will be remove the masking and pray that the seals prevented any paint getting inside!!!!

Whilst waiting for the orange paint to harden off I built the rear steps for the superstructure.

These were made from 1.5mm sheet styrene.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-111_zps6a6434b7.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-111_zps6a6434b7.jpg.html)
This is where they fit on the wheelhouse rear face, above the emergency salvage pump bin.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-112_zpsbd1f5c3d.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-112_zpsbd1f5c3d.jpg.html)
One coat of primer, two coats of orange and the anti-slip pads later and they are now ready to fit.

Now the orange paint is hardening off a start on adding the parts made earlier has begun. The masking over the window openings will be removed in a couple of days or so and I pray no paint has got inside or it's a total disaster!!

The intakes and filters on both the port and starboard sides of the wheelhouse have been fitted in position.
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-114_zpse9f08c8e.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-114_zpse9f08c8e.jpg.html)

The two long filters on the rear face either side of the access door have also been fixed as well as the step unit made yesterday. The salvage pump bin will be fixed onto the deck of the clients Arun when the finished project is delivered.

Beautiful job Mike.  I just love watching skillful modellers at work  O0 .

A novice's question - do you just glue your fittings such as the steps onto the painted surface, or do you scrape the paint off first?  If you scrape, I am impressed that you manage that without leaving little bits of white showing round the edge - or is it touched up after fitting?  Intrigued to know!

Small items are just glued onto the paint, that's where you find out if your paint job is up to scratch and firmly fixed to the wheelhouse!! I also use an industrial grade cyanoacrylate glue (superglue!!) called MitreFix that is used in the furniture industry and comes with its own activator.

The main support for the steps is an angle bracket under the lower platform. This is not painted at the back and the paint is removed where this fits. I remove the paint to within a couple of millimeters of the shape and if any white does show then a quick touch up with a fine brush solves that problem.

This is done for all the bits I add. :-))

The side step to get onto the main access ladder has been made , painted and fitted. Crew now don't have to jump over 2ft up in the air to go topsides!!

The MOB cranes have been started by brazing the two arms together and then adding the other parts with lower temperature solders.

And YES it does open and shut.

The mast made earlier has now been fixed onto the roof of the wheelhouse and the wiring from the wheelhouse threaded up the mast legs and joined to the wiring already on the mast. Now all the functions can be controlled via the switches that will be fitted into the rope bins at the front of the wheelhouse.

I have made a start on fitting the flush glazing into the frames. This is the set for the front of the wheelhouse.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-129_zps97045618.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-129_zps97045618.jpg.html)

The masking over the front windows has been removed and it appears to have done its job of keeping the orange paint out of the wheelhouse  :-))

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-130_zpseb35818e.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-130_zpseb35818e.jpg.html)

Windows fitted in place, just a little touching up around the frames to do.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-131_zpsbfeaa664.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-131_zpsbfeaa664.jpg.html)

I have also fitted the two small windows either side of the door into the wheelhouse.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-132_zps00446140.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-132_zps00446140.jpg.html)

The Port and Starboard sets of windows will be done over the next few days.

Todays 'little' job has been to work out the positions of the stanchions and the runners for the small boat on the upper deck.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-135_zpsa6a7a31e.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-135_zpsa6a7a31e.jpg.html)

The runners for the boat have also been set up ready to braze together.

The main Y boat support rails have been brazed together, trimmed to fit, primed and painted and fitted onto the roof along with the forward bow chock.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-137_zpsdaa94b1e.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-137_zpsdaa94b1e.jpg.html)

From my trawls of the car boot sales I have a hard plastic ( it's styrene) toy inflatable that is the size of a Y boat, within a couple of mm or so, to use on the Arun.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-138_zps538aab5e.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-138_zps538aab5e.jpg.html)

After removing the moulded on details, filling holes, priming and painting the boat is ready to have its cover fitted and strapped down onto the rails.

Still watching this super detailed build   O0 ..one question....does the inflatable sit on axis with the vessel?

Image 'wheelhouse 135'...shows the masking tape for the support brackets for the inflatable angled off axis [aft end of supports angled to port] which sort of threw me :o

In image 'wheelhouse 132', the vertical pleated filter elements in the two vertical exhaust/inlet vents [on deck level on either side of the companionway door] ..... look blocked  :embarrassed: ...is this just masking material?......

Again I find the level and depth of detail amazing  :-)) .... Derek

Hi Derek, glad you like the build so far.  :-))

The Y boat sits at an angle to the centre line on the full size boat and the rails are offset to starboard as well as angled. I think this is a legacy of the early Aruns where the boat was launched with a davit and not  slid down rails and over the stern as in the later boats. The rails were fitted instead of the davit as the stresses and strains on the superstructure at the rear starboard corner were causing problems with the integrity of the wheelhouse.

The filters are just that, filters,  not just air intakes. Just like the air filter element on your car. They look much better in the flesh than the pictures. {-)

Just spent the last couple of days trying to bend and fit brass rods into the correct shapes for the rails on the upper deck.

(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff300/gribeauval/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-140_zps7195efc0.jpg) (http://s242.photobucket.com/user/gribeauval/media/Arun%20Wheelhouse/Wheelhouse-140_zps7195efc0.jpg.html)

The rails on the rear steps needed four different melting point solders to construct .

Overall view from the stern with the Y boat on its rails.

Just need to bend up and fit the backrest for the helmsman then it's spend a couple of days painting them all white and touching up the orange paint .

I am doing an arun build currently, well to be honest the build has stalled,i have thus far realised that super glue and skin arent a good mix, that filler primer does not hide my naff filler jobs/sanding.
Your attention to detail is impressive and you must have a lot of patience, which i have discovered i do not.

Started to add some corporate identity to the wheelhouse today.

Much of today has been taken up with making and fitting the spray screens around the upper steering position.

The tow rope reel, which was made earlier in the build, has now been fitted in position at the rear of the wheelhouse. The top will be glued and allowed to set overnight as the liferaft sits on the top of this reel housing. The handle has been made to allow the rope to be stowed away.

Decided that it was about time the crew were introduced to their new wheelhouse. The figures were obtained from Adrians Marine Figures range. One figure was a "civilian" who was just ripe for a quick makeover to beome an RNLI Divisional Inspector.

First job was to add an RNLI style life jacket from Milliput and allow it to set.

This was followed by a repaint, the addition of the straps and we now have an RNLI Inspector. :-))

The Helmsman has taken over the steering control on the upper console, he just needed a little filing to fit the wheel position.

More bits added.   :-))

The rest of the lower handrails have been made and fitted to each side. The support brackets for the lifeline that runs the length of the superstructure have also been made and fitted, these are the small bracket on the side of the rope lockers at the front, near the top, and under the rear pivot for the MOB crane. The life line will be added using black shirring elastic the maintain its tension.

The rest of the VHF aerials, and their downleads into the wheelhouse, on the upper deck have been made, fixed in place on the rails, and painted. There are two,  one long one forward and a short one aft, on the starboard side rails and one short one, forward, on the port side rails. The support frame for the life ring that sits on the port side rails has also been made and fitted.

The two switch panels for the functions have been made and are ready to fit into the lockers at the front of the wheelhouse.

All the "birds nest tangle" of wires has been tamed, sorted and soldered onto the switch panels and the battery pack added into the central rope bin. Joy of Joys !! Everything works as it should.  :-))

After hoisting the flags they are made to hang in a more natural manner by use of a hot air gun.

That's all folks !!    Anything else is just fiddling about just for the sake of it.

Wish I had a fraction of your skill. I've not even got a clue what to do with these two Thames hulls yet.

Just make sure you build the correct wheelhouse for the boat you are considering, there were two main styles with different front corners !!

The client collected the finished article on Thursday and seemed to be pleased with the result so a good outcome to all the hard work.

On with the other projects.

I fancy Sir William Arnold 52 - 02.
How hard will it be to get the drawings for the cabin ?

The Arun  wheelhouse had it's first trip out today on Garreth's existing hull.

There has been a lot of sea mist along the coast, but the new wheelhouse looked very nice on Colwyn bay model boating lake.

You are an incredible model builder Mike. :-))

Mike.  I have a copy of plans for 52-02 Sir William Arnold, which Neil kindly lent to me so that I could photo copy them and I am in the process of building her?  It is not just the cabin which was different, the foredeck is slightly longer to allow for the shape of the front of the cabin?

If your son wants a copy of the plans, pm me your address, I will  get them copied and send them on to you for a donation to the RNLI to cover costs.

Ask away surfer 71,this is a great place to find things out. You might also want to join another site RCMB, which is radio controlled model boats best just to Google RCMB Forum, and join from there
Good luck with your builds
