I've been surfing ebay the last day or so and I have noticed quite a few of the sellers-busnesses not individuals seem to acting oddly.
What I mean is the goods they advertise are available for pickup immediately from the likes of Tesco or Argos. Now I'm not daft but when I'm looking for led's and the price is £3.50 collect from your local Tesco or wait for post delivery something just seems wrong. Is this something new that Ebay is doing or is it just another scam?

Brian, I've noticed that too, I didn't investigate but I assumed perhaps wrongly, that couriers would just drop off at a local store for collection? Have to say didn't see anything advertised on Ebay.

Some Individual sellers are offering FREE delivery to ARGOS (your local branch, you have to SELECT BEFORE you commit to buy) or ASDA (the same) you get an E Mail telling you when it's at the branch you select & you get a PIN code & barcode for the pickup) I just print it off the hotmail & go round there , it works & it can be convenient, I've used it a couple of times I assume it has to be paid for through PAYPAL for it to be offered?. . . .

yep.... its quite handy for those who work close to an Argos/Tesco etc
I have used it a couple of times, delivery times are a no quicker than having home delivery

Yes, it's E-Bay who have got o so clever. Frankly I'm so fed up with them that I can't bothered to read all the crud they send, but the nub of it is that business sellers can now offer the options to collect goods at a local store and also send them internationally. Life is too short to give a monkey's about Internet auction sites. . Google it if it really bothers you.

A lot of people struggle with being at home to take deliveries, so offering this option is obviously going to help buyers and thus sellers. And if it's good for the ebay shops, it's good for ebay/Paypal (because of course they take a nice cut of everything). It's almost a no-brainer.
Same with Global Shipping. I've been international shopping for about 15 years and GS is akin to sliced bread :-)

All internet and mail order businesses are trying to overcome the problem of having to make multi-attempts to deliver goods to people who are at work all day. These are costly, and often result in returned goods because the courier is unable to deliver. Some are using Click and Collect, some like Amazon are using lockers which are located in places with longer access hours.
It also generates additional revenue for local businesses who host these collection points operations, not only directly, but also from chance sales.
In our area corner shops as well as supermarkets are acting as collection points.

I'm very often not in when the courier calls, meaning repeat callbacks, so a text telling me it's at the Co-op saves money and time all round. Works for me.

Well its nice to know its not a scam but I'll stick with the postie/courier, they can leave it with any of my neigbours, I always leave a card attached to the doorbell if I have to go out on the expected delivery day.

Another thing that annoys me with eBay is the amount of adverts...you have to wait ages for the page you want to load due to all the animated adverts, the 'you might also be interested in' items...by the time the page has loaded, I've got fed up waiting and toodled off elsewhere.

should make very little difference with general download speeds. what are you on ?.

Ebay seems to be very slow at the moment, although as Rich says its mainly all the other sites which are used to push ads which seem to be slowing things down.

There is probably a parallel with this scenario.
My brother bought his tyres, on ebay, collected and fitted at Halfords.
He was told that these are just the same tyres, off the shelf, but much cheaper.
Probably the same at Argos and Tesco. Stuff is off the shelf.
For the ebay seller it is a way of not holding stock, for the retailer it is a sale they would not otherwise have had, for the consumer it is a much better price.
Seems like a win, win, win to me.

Some may be, but most isn't, Argos etc are just acting as a holding point. The seller sends the good as normal, the courier the delivers them to Argos or other location who then sit on them (hopefully not literally) until you collect them.
I'm sure these companies are not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts and are making a little for each package held.
It's a great system, the courier only has on stop, so saves time and money. The end customer doesn't have to sit around all day waiting for the delivery driver, who will of course call within 30 seconds of you deciding to go read this months model boats magazine in the throne room.

If you use Firefox with the AdblockPlus addon, you don't suffer any adverts at all. When I browse on other people's machines I am always shocked by how many adverts are pushed at you nowadays.

By heck gents, that's so much better...just downloaded Adblock Plus, and it works a treat, not an advert in sight. Not only does it make eBay much quicker to use, it also works on Facebook.

It's not just e.bay, It seems that very few companies can deliver when you expect them to, Although how is this for service... I ordered a Gallon of a corrosive chemical from a Laboratory in Antrim, Ireland at 3.40pm yesterday. I live in Essex. At 8.30 this morning got an e.mail saying" Dave, your delivery driver WILL deliver this item at between 2.20 and 3.0pm today!!.....And he was there at 2.23!!!!! Unbelieveable....That's what service used to be about.

I was wondering what all the complaints about ebay adverts was.
Turns out I'd forgotten I've got Adblock on my Chrome browser :embarrassed:
Must be years since I installed it and it just does its thing, all day and night without any fuss.

What is this click and collect thing all about on eBay? Is is a permanent feature do we know?
I'm not sure I like it, I'd rather have things delivered to my door thanks. Has anybody tried it yet?

It's ok if you are out and about all day.
You can collect as and when you want
without waiting for post/courier.
I am lucky having 2 Argos stores within
a half mile, so it's quite convenient.
Normally free posting as well.

The seller gave me a date when it would be at Argos.
On large items there can be over £10 saving on delivery.

There's an Argos around the corner from work and I can pick on way home.
You should get an option from Ebay to send you a text message (or Email ) when it ready for collection.

I think you have to pay thru PAYPAL , usually there's no shipping charge & your notified by EBay when your parcels ready for you to collect with the necessary PIN code & a bar code too ( for the techies :embarrassed: )I just print out the top part of the E Mail & take it round there , There is a limit on size & weight , tho' I've had a spare wheel & jack delivered to ARGOS for pick up with no problems . . . .
There's pick up points springing up all over the place now , not just at supermarkets , so it's going to be the 'in ' thing by the look of it . . . .
I've seen UPS / DPD / YODEL / ROYAL MAIL doing deliveries at my local ARGOS so it seems to be spreading . . . lower costs , convenient pick up , got to be a good thing ?

It is a really good idea especially if you are at work or not going to be at home to take in a parcel.
A collect date is given to you when you pay by PayPal, into Argos and collect your item. Brill.

as I now understand it. If they offer this collect in store service (some independant shops and also post offices do it as well) it has to be postage free, which means if you want home delivery it also has to be postage free.
The downside if you are buying normally and not bidding on an auction item, the price will be automatically inflated by the seller to take into account no postal charges.

I use it all the time these days, where it's available. It's far easier for me to pop into argos on the way home from work than it is to have to wait another 24 hours to drive to the collection office because nobody was at home to collect the parcel (why does the post have to come during the working day? Be far better if the postman came at 5-6pm!).
It's very easy for the seller - it works in the same way they'd send any parcel, they just get given the address of the argos store and a reference number as part of the address.
If you can get your email on your phone (although I think they can text you details), it's so handy. Walk straight up to the collection desk with your email opened up, they usually see you straight away (although as it gets more popular I can't see this staying the same forever), walk out a couple of minutes later.
Not only is it very convenient, it also saves your parcel being subjected to the likes of...

etc etc etc.
The only bad thing about it is the slight feeling of guilt when you're walking past the 40 or so other people who've bought things in the store and are waiting, so you can pick up your £2 pack of plastic zip-lock bags!
I'm surprised Argos haven't attached a small surcharge to the delivery cost, although clearly what they're trying to do is get people in the store in the hope that they'll buy more things whilst they're there.
