Yes it does - the cradle turns through 180 degrees to make it ready for the next launch. The whole unit travels at 25 mph and is hydraulically driven and costs £1.5m; the boat is a further £2m.

It was a sail actually to-day.

RFA Fort Victoria coming to the end of her major, twelve month, re-fit; the biggest ever under taken by Cammell Lairds for the RFA.

...at lunch time I came across this: the end of the rainbow. O0 and the other end over the pirate ship at New Brighton.

Other sightings include:
1st: Flintersun, out bound for Aalesund from Garston, probably one of the largest vessels to berth at Garston for many years.
2nd:Julia, a chemical/oil products tanker, inbound for Liverpool.
3rd:Stena Feronia covering for the norma Belfast l ferry which is undergoing a re-fit at Falmouth.
4th:Ham 316, this a Dutch dredger engaged on dredging the channel into Liverpool in preparation for the larger container vessel that will be using the new container terminal, Liverpool2, which is now under construction and running the thick end of twelve months late. As I understand it the channel is also being dredged so that the QE11 and POW can safety enter the Mersey should out Scottish brethren decide to commit Hara-kri.
5th Oyster catchers, having a barnie.

Not really a jolly day for a jaunt with stiff SE'ly but needs must; however, to be seen where the Hong Kong registered bulker Golden Bull arriving at Liverpool to discharge coal. She is was assisted by the Anglegarth, Millgarth and Svitzer Stanlow.

For the third day running the dredger HAM 316 came into the river to change pilots and to take on spares, she will probably do the same for most of the coming week judging by the weather forecast.

The Svitzer Stanlow them came past to return to her normal position at the Tranmere oil jetty.

LB....you mention the Golden Bull to discharge coal in Liverpool......& we see what appears to be the coal stack on land in the background

Is it for home heating use?....or power generation?......

We export [to world markets] a considerable tonnage of coal from the Illawarra coast of NSW where I live....but it is mainly metallurgical [coking] coal for blast furnace iron production......Derek
Title: Re: As i was taking a Jolly Jaunt.....
Post by: Liverbudgie2 on December 09, 2014, 11:12:15 pm
Derek,
The coal is for power generation at Fiddlers Ferry power station about 15 miles from here. Coal is not used for domestic purposes except in special circumstances; wood chips are also imported via Liverpool for use in other power stations.

Most of the stuff that is exported from your area goes to China though, at one point, it was cheaper for us to import from OZ rather than mine the stuff ourselves. This might still be the case as this ship did cross the Atlantic however, I suspect that she loaded on the US east coast.

Not such a good day for a JJ today - cold with blustery showers of rain and hail nevertheless movements still took place: The first one was the Stena Precision outward from Birkenhead for Belfast with cargo only. The ferries are a bit disorganised at present due to the weather and engine problems.

Second is the  Elisabeth Knutsen outward from the Tranmere oil stages for the Macduff anchorage, she has a length of 265 x 43 meters (875.5' x 141.9' in the Queens measurement) and a deadweight tonnage of 124,768 tons/tonnes whatever.

Ah, I see now that's why there are so many bulkers going there; must be a rum place at this time of the year. The only reason that I thought she had come from the US was that positions on Marine Traffic where given as being in the North Atlantic, which is a big place as we all know.

As an aside, I have entered this image in a Nikon competition: http://www.nikoncompetition.co.uk/12daysofNikon/  It is in challenge 10 I need some votes to win so if you have a mind to, please vote for it, thanks.

A dawn jaunt to-day to catch RFA Fort Victoria moving from dry dock into the wet basin at Cammell Lairds. She has almost completed her re-fit at a cost of £50m give or take and will be undertaking trials soon.

At the same time the sun rose from behind the Cheshire hills as the tanker Frank passed on her way to Stanlow, to give a nice mid-winter dawn over the Mersey.

To those who maybe missing the results of my recent JJ's. I have been undertaking them of course but, there is little to be had of maritime interest in Stroud, rural Herefordshire and Annan I'm afraid. Normality, hopefully, will return on Monday when the tides become favourable followed by a visit during the following week.

Time to resume I suppose,

It has been pretty quite of late but Monday saw the arrival and departure of two bulkers: Miraero Ace, 32787dwt, outward for the US Gulf and inward the  Marichristina 74,410dwt.

I also notice lots of activity in the sky. lots of vapour trails for more than normal, close together heading in an easterly direction for the most part, at the same point  they turned NNE as they approached the Pennines,  they looked like twin engined aircraft but on closer inspection they were defiantly four engine. Nothing appeared on Flight24 so was a exercise taking place?

For today we had several movements but, instead of a JJ, it was a  Jolly fast drive, all of 30mph.

1st was the Tanker Spike (249m x 44m x 13m) for Tranmere

2nd was the bulker Golden Glory (199m x 32m x 11.4m) with scrap for Turkey.
3rd was the tug Svitzer Caldey (34m x 15m x 6.8m) She is here to assist a BP tanker at the OSI in Liverpool Bay however, owing to the forecast of severe  weather over the next few days this has been postponed. She normally operate in the Milford Haven area.

And introducing my fluffy assistant, she appeared last summer having decided that her former home was not for her!
Temptation almost got the better of her but in the end perseverance succeeded.

Today, it was more of a drive in the rain to a yard a short distance away but, I'm afraid I cannot post the results for obvious reason's. However, I did go to a nearby place yesterday as there was nothing moving in the river and try some experiments with HDR and stitching. The result were mixed, but I shall post some of the result for your perusal. The principle problem was that it was a nice sunny day which at this time of year results in dark shadows and bright bits elsewhere with the exposure range in some instances ranging over three or four stops.

The vessels are 1: Caledonian Isles, (95m x 16m x 3.2m, 5,221gt, 767dwt)

2: Ulysses, (204m x 34m x 5.7m, 50,938gt, 9,665dwt)

And now to reply to the two queries below

Quite the computer setup - two displays, with different images! May I ask how you accomplished this?
Tom

To install two screens it is quite a simple operation: 1st, purchase a screen which is compatible with your first or purchase two new screens (monitors) ok2
2nd, if you don't have installed already, purchase a good quality video card, these can be expensive but it well worth splashing out on. Modern ones have two ports to which you attach the screen cables, if your video card only has one port then there maybe a port from the mother board as well to which you can attach the second screen.
To set them up I suggest that you Google the procedure; it is quite simple and only takes a minute or two to do.

The background image on both screens will be the same. The reason that you can see two images in the picture is because I have a web page open on the left hand one. Should I want to look at another page or keep an eye on my emails at the same time I can simply click on top of the page and drag it over to the right hand screen and open my emails on the first screen.

As you may have realised I build my own PC's, this one is the Mk4 and is almost three years old, I'll begin thinking about an upgraded version in the next twelve months or so which may or may not have two video cards so that I can have four screens running at once should I require it.

If you want to have twin screens and your PC is over five years old then I would seriously think about obtaining a new machine or even build your own, it's not difficult, if you can build model boats then you can certainly build your own PC easy pezzy

Fluffy puss did NOT eat me butties I was tempting her, she had some bickies instead. She is very good like that and always asks like now 'cos I'm late with her dinner writing all this.

The white thing is a WD My Cloud (3TB) and what a load of tosh it is as well. I did buy as back up but the transfer speed are so bad (3mps) that I feel like binning it. The problem is that my broadband (BT) although quite fast for the UK is nowhere fast enough to make this thing run property if I had fibrotic cable running outside then perhaps it would be OK. I only bought it because I though I would be able to log on to it when I was a away but the connection is even slower there than here (Boarders). Right now I'm seriously considering taking the drive out and putting it in a normal enclosure then, at least I would have some more storage space.

The latest JJ more like a couple of trips on the Royal Iris fresh out of re-fit at Cammell Lairds which appears to include the complete replaying of the upper decks in timber and a fine job they have done of it as well, which shows that the shipwrights skills have not been entirely lost.

The principle movement over the last day or two was the departure of the RFA Fort Victoria after a twelve month £50m re-fit, which has been completed on time and to cost. her departure was delayed for a few days because of finally adjustments and weather. However, yesterday afternoon she finally moved out of the wet basin and into the river were she transported over to the cruise terminal to take on bunkers; she will be sailing later to-day.

I WANT TO MAKE IT CLEAR THAT THESE IMAGES ARE COPYRIGHT AND THAT THEY MAY NOT BE COPIED, STORED  BY ANY MEANS WHATEVER OR USED  IN ANY PUBLICATION WHETHER THAT THAT BE PRINT OR ELECTRONIC WHATSOEVER WITHOUT MY WRITTEN PERMISSION. FAILURE TO OBSERVE THIS WILL RESULT IN ACTION BEING TAKEN.

Now that's out of the way a fair amount has been happening. The RFA Fort Victoria stayed on the Cruise Terminal for two days this enabled me to obtain some evening shots of her. She was due to deport yesterday, Wednesday, but she developed a shaft problem as she came off and have to be put in the dock system for it to be attended to.

Currently the webpage I rely is down so I can't obtain the detail's for the other vessel so you will have to curtail your expectations for a while.

Derek,

Thanks for the link I have downloaded the software and it appears to be OK, I'll have play with it in the morning.

I have shaken my leg(s) most of the afternoon in fact trying to find something suitable - only to become more confused than normal so I retired to the workshop and did some more detail work in the Trumpeter 1/200 Bismarck.

Almost all the images posted on here are copyright. I only made mention of it because I had noticed that for instance, all the images I posted on Tuesday all bar one had 42 views and one had 43 which means, I suspect, that the one with 43 had been specially selected and copied. Not that it could be used for anything much as I had save it at a very low resolution.

Copyright as we all know, I hope, is a very contentious issue these days, which can lead to, at the least, unwanted issues occurring to huge fines being levied in some cases. I only included those paragraphs to clarify my position.

Night, night,

I am not sure How the  "image count"  is done on Mayhem's site.  I am assuming it is every time a different member views them.

For the sake of testing, I viewed a sample picture several times and found the count did not alter.  ???      Clicking onto 'copy image', I also found it did not alter,  so I am confused as to why the number of views is different. My test copy was not saved but scrapped.

However, to ensure your safety from thieves then I would advise a copyright image mark as advised by members.  If you are concerned then perhaps Martin could help you further.

Hope this helps

The view count will be like that because of people like me, using this site on my phone I sometimes accidentally tap a photo and it opens it. I highly doubt its someone specially selecting 1 particular photo to save.

Well, hopefully most of the issues have been resolved and we can move forward. Many thanks to those who offered their advice and advised on possible solutions; in the end though I opted for the one in Lightroom which once you have fathomed it out works as well any other and probably better than most, added to which I already have Lightroom installed. ok2

Many of the JJ's of the last few days have involved standing around in the freezing cold waiting for something to happen but such is the life of the marine phot.
The RFA Fort Victoria eventually sailed from the Cruise Terminal but only for about a quarter of a miles or so before it was announced that there was a problem with the port shaft and that the item that was causing the problem was basically "intercoursed". This meant that she had to be taken in to the Liverpool dock system for repair I have refrained from including any images of this unfortunate incident to save embarrassment; the CO is also a friend of mine as well. However, I'm glad to say that she eventually sailed on Saturday morning in glorious sunshine, the downside was that I was on the bridge of a Dutch frigate when it happened. <:( <:( <:(

Later, HMS Portland was due at lunch time the following day to be followed by two Dutch vessels HNLMS Tromp (F803) and HNLMS Van Amstel (F831. In short HMS Portland arrived two hours early just a client was visiting me so I was stuffed on that. >:-o The next day the two Dutch ships were due so for two hours I sat in the Royal Iris waiting and the Van Amstel appeared in the distance but were was to Tromp? In short there was a problem with the weather, pilots and tugs so on Saturday morning she went away at high speed bound Plymouth. So that was my visit up the spout. However, I and other did get a visit to HMS Portland and HNLMS Van Amstel and plenty of detailed pictures were obtained of both which will be available on DVD in due course, at a price to be determined in due course.

Other incidents took place during the late Sunday evening early Monday morning which involved the new Hoylake lifeboat (see top of this thread) on her first and second "shouts"

From LB....

'The RFA Fort Victoria eventually sailed from the Cruise Terminal but only for about a quarter of a miles or so before it was announced that there was a problem with the port shaft'

For those that perhaps are unaware  Liverbudgie   was admitted into  hospital last Thursday  with a suspected heart attack. He requested that I let you all know  that he will  have to curtail his Jolly Jaunts for the time being . Hopefully LB will be back to his old self  ASAP  but   a little bit of rest will be the order of the day when he is discharged   from hospital.  { this was posted last week but  the posts where lost due to an unexpected problem }.

I'm back home now - thankfully. Thanks for all the messages it will be a while before there will be any new additional JJ's but I do have a large archive of material.

My deepest gratitude to the medical teams and staff at Arrow Park University Trust Hospital, Wirral and Broardgreen University Hospital, Liverpool for their care and expertise throughout - I wonder sometimes if we really appreciate what we have in the UK regarding the NHS yes, it has its faults, what doesn't but, those are far, far outweighed by the benefits. So all you politician's of whatever bent you may be, a plague on all your houses for using the NHS as a political football.

and yes Derek there was one, which if I had been thirty years younger I would have gone on bende'd knee  %% %% %% to ask if she would do me the honour of becoming Mrs LB.

A lady friend is looking after me for a while so I don't have to do the cooking or cleaning, not that I did much anyway  :} thankfully, my sister, a senior practice  nurse in Stroud is 180 miles away!! The downside to that is that she retires in a couple of weeks (just had "conversation" with her >>:-( for going to Morrison's)

Lastly,  a huge thanks to Bowave for running around, collecting me this morning and other unexpected things as well as ensuring Fluffy Puss was fed and watered.

I made my first serious effort to at doing some exercise this morning, venturing to the paper shop for my copy of the Daily Mail.  No real side effects were encountered, but I'm a bit reluctant to lug a camera around at present still and I can't drive yet, apparently.

So, in the meantime I've had to miss all this lovely winter sunshine and try and get my head around some video editing software which  I have subscribed to. It's broken a habit of a lifetime do so and it hurts, it really does  <:( But as I have a camera, two in fact, which shoots video as well as stills I had shot some stuff last year but I had no real idea of how to edit it properly.

When I became tired of doing that and listening and trying to make sense of the tutorials on the subject I had a look at some pictures. I came across the file for the 2005 IFOS event. As some my know I had the privilege of covering this event for a certain modelling magazine; this enabled me to gain images which were denied to the public at large.  There are several thousand pictures in the file and only about .05% have seen the light of day.

So, instead of a JJ a Jolly sail might fill the bill for a while.  Others will follow if the is sufficient interest.

would you like me to respectively Watermark the unwatermarked photos for you?

May I suggest that you watermark or otherwise identify your work before you post. Otherwise posting on a forum like this effectively puts them in the public domain. You will notice that Martin watermarks his original stuff. Lovely photos by the way.

Recovery is progressing, I hope, but feel quite lightheaded and weak at times which I presume is caused by the pill's they have given me; anyway I see the Doc later this week for a check up.

Video editing coming along quite well also which, to date, is quite easy - once you've mastered the basics. So, I should reasonably proficient for my nephews wedding in September which I've been told I'm doing.

This class are Russian built and their gas turbines are notorious for smoking when cold, the Captain was really embarrassed by it; virtually all the people on the Round Tower were coughing and sputtering for ages after she went past.

All the pictures in this series where taken on the Solent and in Portsmouth which are foreign water for me ;)

Endeavouring to return to some form of normality after the events of two months ago but, it's not as easy as one had hoped. Climbing the stairs is the a bit of a problem at times and I find myself short of breath for no apparent reason at times as well, this is not helped by people telling me that I've lost all my colour and that I don't look well at all. (ones sister, a recently retired practice nurse though, this had changed a couple of days later).

However, whilst I've not been on anything like an extended JJ I have picked up the camera bag and put in the back of the car so that at least I can have a jolly drive.  To alleviate the carrying of said bag, I have thought of several scenarios, ranging from an electric chariot and trailer, This would have an extended use as a model transport as well thus circumventing parking and access problems at the NB lake to having a special belt made, to which I can attach a two wheeled shopping trolley and tow it behind me.  The latter has yet to come to fruition as, at present, I'm unable to find a manufacturer of such accoutrements.
Nonetheless,  I've been out with the camera and have come across the vessels below over the last week or so.

1) Lokholmen built in 2009 inwards for The queen Elizabeth oil dock at Eastham on the 22nd March.
2) Mersey Spirit. 1996, outwards for Irish Sea ports.
3) Willem van Oranje. 2011 currently dredging sand in the approaches to Liverpool and Liverpool Bay this is then pumped ashore and used as in fill for the new container terminal currently under construction.
4) Arco Beck. 1989. currently dredging Garston Dock and dumping in Liverpool bay.
5) Mississippi Star. 2010, a chemical/oil tanker inbound for the QE11 oil dock at Eastham.

To continue:

The following day the 24th March my JD resulted in observations of the following:

1) Sea Jack, 2003, This is a jack up rig and is currently employed in installing the piles  for the new sea wall for the new maga container terminal currently under construction at Liverpool. it is supposed to be operation by the end of this year, 2015, believe that if you will. she is seen here shifting her position by approximately 1 length.
2) DS Blue Ocean, 2007. A feed container vessel swing for the Gladstone Lock.
4) Anmi, 1992. Inbound for wherever.
3/5)Atlantic Conveyer, 1985. Built to replace a vessel of the same name lost in the Falklands Campaign. Now coming to the end of her working life she is due to be replaced by a new vessel currently under construction in China. At thirty years of age these five vessels have outlived virtually all their Contemporary's by a wide margin without any major problem or delay occurring.
6) Thun Galaxy, 2001, inbound for the Manchester Ship Canal.

Movement information principally comes from three sources Viz: Liverpool AIS, this also has a forum with more in-depth information and pictures and covers the whole of the UK and parts of Europe:

Marine Traffic is well worth watching and is World wide: http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/

I have a marine band scanner as well for more local information much of which is not available to the public as a whole.

Added to this is much local knowledge and contacts.

To complete the latest batch here are some images of 1) the Scottish ferry Hebrides arriving at Cammell Lairds for her annual re-fit and the dredger Willem van Oranje leaving the cruise terminal after bunkering, a crew change and the load of fresh vitals. these are followed by the larger tanker Sks Tanaro 1999, 109787dwt, inbound for the Tranmere oil terminal.

In reply to Derek query the building is indeed the Royal Liver Building, next to this is the Cunard Building though, originally built for the white Star Line, next in line is the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board building, latterly known as the Port of Liverpool Building though, all of the offices are now situated at the north end of the dock system. The three buildings are collectively known as "The Three Graces" these days however, this is a recent romantic concoction.

The interiors of all three building are quite magnificent and display the very best of "high" Edwardian architecture. When I was but a lad, I used to wonder around each building looking at all the models that were on display. In the first class booking hall of the Cunard Building there was a superb 1/48th Bassett-Lowke  model of the Queen Mary and I often wonder what has become of it. Most of the other have ended up in the Liverpool Maritime Museum were they jealously guarded from the prying eyes of the public.

To the present: The cruise ship season got underway yesterday with the arrival of  Fed Olsen's "Black Watch", 1972,  28,670gt. She later sailed for Vigo. It has also been announced to-day that at least one Disney vessel will be arriving at Liverpool at the end of May.

Thanks LB.....yes it is probably universally tragic in what has happened to some of our early heritage buildings........ I remember catching the steam train from Wollongong to Sydney some 60 years ago with my Grandfather.....[52 miles in those days]....I also remember walking with him in Martin Place where the Commonwealth Bank building was the biggest & tallest building in the city ...all of five stories

Built of huge sandstone blocks with polished granite floors and internal walls.....and many bronze polished plaques........Derek

I  refer once more to the Royal Liver Building. I would like to mention that clocks and watches do not have "FACES" they have DIALS, neither do they have "FINGERS" they have "HANDS"but, they do have "WINDING HOLES" in the "DIAL" so that the "WINDING KEY"can be inserted %%

A pretty grim, dank day for Easter Sunday but there was a fair amount of movement on the river which was worth recording along it was not too far away.
First into Birkenhead was the Lady Alexandra she is a medium sized bulker built in 2009.
She was followed by the RMS Lagona built in 2000 with a deadweight of 2,688 tons.
In the river and bound for Garston was the Victoria C which was completed in 2007, also inbound for Garston was the Noest; she was completed in November 1995 and is of 2,310 tons deadweight.
They were followed by the Arklow Raider bound for the Manchester Ship Canal, she was completed  in March 2007 and has a deadweight of 4,504 tons.
I also had my first real opportunity the record images of the Mersey ferry Snowdrop in her new so called camouflage scheme. Now referred to as the "Liquorice Allsorts Boat all that is now required is for "Bertie Bassett" to appear on top of the bridge and all will be complete.
I spied another interesting vessel making little headway against the tide this turned out to be a "luxury" yacht type vessel called the Sarinda. Apparently she has been in the Albert Dock for some years and was being moved to Heswall on the Dee side of the Wirral for conversion into a houseboat. I have since been recieved information that she is the former HDML 1392 and that she has a bit of history which can be perused here: http://www.hmsmedusa.org.uk/HDML_Boats_1350-1399.html
Images of a model of her can be seen here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/25721684@N00/9239632070/in/set-72157632269542118
After all that excitement I wondered off to the New Brighton pond were is spied this being towed around. Apparently, it had been found on the bottom as seen here.

from the Wiki people.......Clock face
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (February 2015)

"A clock face or dial is the part of an analog clock (or watch) that displays the time through the use of a fixed-numbered dial or dials and moving hands. In its most basic form, recognized throughout the world, the periphery of the dial is numbered 1 through 12 indicating the hours in a 12-hour cycle, and a short hour hand makes two revolutions in a day. A longer minute hand makes one revolution every hour. The face may also include a seconds hand which makes one revolution per minute"

 Hi LB,
Really like the photos of the Three Graces, not sure what you think but all the new buildings leave me gobsmacked as to how they got planning permission for that disaster at the end of Old Hall St that looks like someone has stuck two containers on the top. I can remember Tysons building the Atlantic Tower as it was originally called in the seventies next to St Nicholas church and at the time it was extremely modern and personally I thought out of place. I worked as a chippie on Whiteacre house which is the tower above the Echo office in Old Hall St Tysons were the Main contractor and the standard of finish to the interior was superb (1974/5 I think) with all hardwood skirtings and architraves with Sapele fire doors right through the building. They spent a fortune on the place sound insulating the concrete floors and double skinned partition walls which also had two layers of plasterboard both sides. The building was for Mersyside County Council which I believe lasted only a few years but don't quote me, the main man of which was quite short in height I got the job of building a raised floor in the corner of his office so that when he sat at his desk (19th floor if I remember rightly) he could lok out up the river without standing. I would like to know what it looks like inside now, when you pass the building it looks deserted.
Keep the photos coming, the tide doesn't come in close enough for ships here in Southport.
           Cheers, Peter. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

Lots of JJ's have take place of course but however, the time required to sort and adjust images is very time consuming and the files are big, 149MB in most cases so the point came when I had to double the memory to 16gig the processor is will have to be uprated in the near future as well so, basically, that means an uprated PC will have to be built.

People may also recall in another thread, that I was contemplating restoring my 1972 TR6. Well. I applied to Liverpool Community Collage for a place on the course and I have been accepted and I will going to see them and the workshops tomorrow evening.; so hopefully work will begin in the Autumn.

In the meantime we had a visit from some warships the other week and two berthed on the landing stage viz: USS Vicksburg and the Turk TGS Goksu. I've also been doing experimenting so here are the results of the USS Vicksburg sailing:

TGS Goksu was formally the USS Estocin (FFG-15). She was handed over to the Turks in 2003.

Some of the TGS Goksu (F497) getting underway.

She had arrived wearing this flag, which just happened to be ANZAC day, make of that what you will, and sailed doing the same thing a few days later.
Apart from that there is nothing much to report at present except that it's a nice sunny and clear spring day and sanity has prevailed. Now I must get on and sort out some image's for a certain editor who wants half a dozen set's of images for his gallery in his mag.

P.S. As you can see I've do some experimenting.
