Just tried to access the site and this is what I got.....
NOTICE: This domain name expired on 09/12/2014 and is pending renewal or deletion.Renew it now!
Hope not it wasn't a heavily used site but did have some good stuff going for it.
-
Same for me Brian. {:-{ I like that site, as you say there is some good info etc on there.
-
Hopefully just an oversight 8)

Didn't the same thing happen before ?

Yes, but not long ago it was mentioned that it might be going I thought due to costs.
Just remembered it was NOT the Tug forum with running issues but Paddle Ducks... So probably just a tec issue..
As regards costs, the basics are cheap its the space required Photos etc. where the costs are accrued
Yes you can link your photos from photo sites etc but when people leave, accounts are deleted so are the pictures and it makes threads look daft. Forums where pictures can be posted direct are the best in my view, but this does take up space, on here I think it is now 220kb which is more than ample for a good picture..
The tug site, Paddle Ducks, MB, the Warship forums all have a place as does Mayhem
-
Not being an internet guru, is it a major expense to run a forum? I mean, apart from paying for the domain name, what costs are incurred?
-
A domain name and basic hosting can be under £100 per year. Forum software can be free: but running a forum, editing, personalising and moderating it costs a pile of time. We should be thankful for what we have here: a mass of data from over the years, produced by an enormous amount of experts, and all for just about nothing.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Andy.
I'm certainly thankful for what forum owners do for us all, it makes our hobbies much more sociable, helpful and fun too.

Sorry NOT a great loss as Mayhem is FAR FAR BETTER
Dave
Sorry you feel that way Stav but there is a lot of guys across the water that give good info specially to the tug lads & not forgetting guys at this side that's put a great deal into the forum.

Agreed. I always enjoyed the Tug Forum with its international flavour- in particular the long running thread on NW US/Canada Logging tugs. It is very sad when we lose any resource.
I wonder where the Tug Forum posters will go now.
-
Lets see what happens, Hopefully it is just an oversight ..

As one of the Moderators on the Model Tug a Forum, I have to say that I am left somewhat in the dark about this. I do know that the owner has had some problems of late and has not been active on the site for some time.
Sadly, if I had to guess, I would say that the end has come! I do hope I am wrong and I will let you all know as soon as I hear anything.

cheers Barry, and thanks.........don't get on as much as I have been in the past, as am not building a tug at present, but would certainly know where to go when such knowledge was needed,............a great site I have to say and so very knowledgeable people on there for a specific type of boat, and contrary to certain views IT WILL BE MISSED.

It is always sad to see disappearing a colleague.
I am one of administrators of the French forum " LE BLEU "
I know the work which it represents .............
That of lost work ...................

poll you are right also we can't afford to lose the information as you all know we are literally a dying breed how the hell can the demise of this site be anything other than a great loss

So it is, that's that then %)

I Did offer to host The Model Tug forum here on Mayhem a while ago when they had other issues but nothing ever came of it..... {:-{
Hope they are back up and running soon.

Websites and Forum are usually 'Hosted' on "Big Boy" computers, usually air-conditioned warehouses full of computers,
'hard wired' to the internet. Obliviously you have to pay them for this privilege and the more reliable companies want
£100s of pounds a year.

They never answer ...............
Especially not in French ..........................
They are from British Columbia ....................... another planet ...............
It explains everything

Yes, the tug forum is back up and running. A slight admin problem caused the problem, so for those who want to, enjoy the site. For those that don't, you are also welcome O0

I have tried joining there twice in the last year and never heard back from them, and the site is normally not available when I try to go there lately. I hope they do figure it out, as a tug fan I would like to be a member there too.

When the site gets up and running again, send me a PM with your details. I will pass them directly to the boss who should then approve your membership quickly. Unfortunately I think he is away as I have not heard back from him yet re this current problem...

...and I thought it was my geriatric PC or even oldie me that had bumbled it again.

The Model Tug Forum will be back up,and running before long. The Boss has been away and the dreaded server made a mistake. We are assured things will be back to normal shortly... %%

Do we have any news as to when the site will be back on????

It appears we are in the hands of the server at the moment. It should not be too long.....I hope!
-
Thanks Footski, fingers crossed we will not lose this superb website

Mark
-
Hi Footski,
Hopefully the site will be back soon as all I get is "Go Daddy" and do I want to buy the site, weird. Maybe I shouldn't have become a site supporter.
Feliz Anio Nuevo,
Cheers,
Peter.
P.S. We lived in Rojales Costa Blanca for 5 years.
-
Peter,
We are down near Malaga and have been for nearly 16 years....lovely it is too.
I am assured by the Boss that all will be well with the site, but it appears to be taking longer than we expected.....I will send another message so watch this space...
-
I for one am awaiting its return. If there is another potential site owner out there, I think they should look for a new host.
I had a chat forum for a couple of years with plenty of hosted photos with it, the whole package was only £60 a year. It used up plenty of bandwidth but I never incurred extra charges.
-
The message has now changed to one that I get when a web site has gone.
I hope not.
-
I have had contact with the boss this morning and he assures me that work to re connect the site is nearing its end.....We just have to be a little patient.....

It doesn't seem to be quite right as I have put a post on it and it was there one minute and gone the next weird
-
Hi All,
Seems to be back to normal, just posted a topic.
Cheers,
Peter. :-))
-
Me too but seems a bit sluggish....
( Barry, ask the administrator to ask the hosting company to optimise the memory allocation and check the cache handling. )
Martin :-)
-
Yes guys we are back. A few gremlins to iron out, but at least we seem to be working well. Thanks for that information Martin. I will certainly pass it on immediately. :-))
-
Seems to have gone again.
Problems with pictures, smilies, sometime there & sometimes not.
I can only imagine the work and cost that goes into running a forum but there does seem to be a real problem here.
Is a real solution likely?
-
It's back again, again. I reckon they need to change service provider.

I have been in touch with the boss, who is still trying to get things sorted. I have no idea how long this will take, or even if it is possible. I appreciate that people are getting fed up of what appears to be no action, but I will report any news as soon as I have it.... :embarrassed:
-
Hi Barry
Thank's for the update I do check in daily
I do hope the boss can work thing's out as i am a big fan of the tug forum :-))

If there anything I can do, PM me.

Thanks Martin.
I have just had reply from the boss. The problems are being worked on, but they are expensive and complex. He does not want to close the site down, for what could become an extended period while it gets sorted.
The plan is to, hopefully get things done properly in about a week, but you never know whether his efforts will work or not, so it could take a little longer.
Sorry I do not have more good news.
-
I think the best solution to the problem would be to migrate the forum to a new host and close the old one down. If its taking the host so long to sort this problem out I would hazard a guess that a lot of what has been stored is unsalvageable,
However any good host would have a system of automatically backing up all content at least once a week but should be once a day in case of problems like this. I know from my time of running a forum I checked each evening manually to make sure that the auto backup had been done (belts and braces)
If the back up had been done its just a case of roll back to the back up date, ok you may lose a couple of days info, but it seems all the content of the forum has gone down the pan here.
-
You would hope so wouldn't you but web hosting companies have very little time for small player, like hobby forums and in my experience offer Zero help and advice unless you threaten to end the contract or attempt invoke penalty clause for downtime! >:-o

So how does running a forum actually work?
Who owns what?
What is the new server that Mayhem is using - a computer in Martins office or something else?
If you move provider - whatever they do - can you take the old forum content with you?
If everything is on servers owned by the hosting company how much sorting out can you actually do?
-
1. So how does running a forum actually work?
Smoke & Mirrors. Red Bull, alcohol, 'comfort foods', coffee, lots of kicking things!
2. Who owns what?
Whoever pays the bills! ( I "own" Mayhem in that I set it up and keep it running. )
The forum 'owner' always own the forum "data" and it's up to the owner to download backups or pay the
'provider' extra to do so.
3. What is the new server that Mayhem is using - a computer in Martins office or something else?
To have a website on the internet, it needs to be on a "registered" computer / system that's permanently available and
connected to the Internet ! You also need a registered URL eg. www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk)
You then install the Forum software on that computer (over the internet) copy all the content and run your forum from there.
4. If you move provider - whatever they do - can you take the old forum content with you?
Yes, the 'Forum content' always belongs to the "owner", like you own the content you send by email.
( Interestingly, anything you post on a forum, facebook, youtube, etc, etc is owned by that site hence the "Agreements"
when you first sign up! )
Moving large amounts of data between providers can be fraught with difficulties, not always compatible between systems
and Very time consuming.
Then there is moving the URL, the site "name" to new 'provider' and all the issues with that!
5. If everything is on servers owned by the hosting company how much sorting out can you actually do?
Depends on the contact you have with the 'provider', I have a "VPS" contract which means I can do quite a few technical things I
can fool around with but it can get VERY complicated and most of it is way beyond me!
There are at least 12 different systems and Apps involved with running the Mayhem site!!!
A 'new' provider will promise you the earth to get you business but their enthusiasm tails off rather quickly once
you've signed up!
Martin %% ( Edited )
-
Martin
Thank you for the explanation and your continuing enthusiasm. skill, sanity (possibly) :-) .
-
Hi Martin,
Re paragraph 5. sounds rather like Cameron, Clegg and Osbourne (promising the earth etc).
Well done for all your own hard work and time.
Cheers,
Peter. :-))
-
Well at long last, things seem to be back to normal on the Tug forum. All the old photos seem to be visible and posting new shots can be done quicker than before. If anyone sees any more problems, please drop me a line, so we can get it sorted out quickly.
Cheers and enjoy the site.
Many thanks to Martin for his help and advise...
