Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good sound system for my sub.
It is a surface runner and am looking for something loud enough to hear across the pond :)

Hi Nomad and welcome to Mayhem.
What an unusual request. I have not heard of a sound system being fitted to a submarine. My first reaction is that they are 'low in the water' vessels and that any speaker would be in risk of flooding ? but it may have been done before.

I have made a waterproof speaker for my mates RN Oberon class Sub. It consisted of two waterproof mylar speakers, back to back, bonded into a piece of appropriate sized plastic tube and waterproofed fully with silicone sealant. This was designed for a diving sub and to be honest, did not provide a great sound output. Taking into account the relatively small size of the speakers to fit within the tight confines of the model, and the lack of any meaningfully sized holes to let the sound out, it was not very effective. The sound unit fitted was Dive Klaxon from Jotika and sounded pretty cool...just within about 30' of the model!

I have a speaker on one of mine. Mylar cone speakers are waterproof enough as are piezo electric transducers ( good enough for pings and klaxons )of course you would not hear anything from shore when it's underwater, but yours is a surface runner. As mentioned sound isn't great and small speakers are not very powerful. Or you could get one of those waterproof Bluetooth speakers and connect it your phone but range is limited.

Knowing as much about submarines as I do about Pre-Ming dynasty Chinese ceramics, I'm bound to ask the idiot's question "What would a real submarine sound like from say 50 yards away?". Don't they run on diesel engines with submerged exhausts when they are surface-running? In which case you'd be lucky to hear much - if anything at all.
As a sometime maker of noisy things I was frequently asked for the engine sound for Bismarck or Titanic (steam turbines behind feet of steel plating?). My favourite trick was to be completely silent for about ten seconds and then say "Wanna hear it again?".
I'd save my money for something useful if I were you, Nomad.

UBN works (lurks?) in a model shop not unadjacent to Portsmouth. Don't forget to take a digital voice recorder when you visit, and bring the results to Mayhem next year. We could have a bash at beating the Guinness world record for hysterical giggling. Steve Dean may even do you a sound set for a P100.

If you don't wet the clay first, the handles will fall off...
I have been trying to remember if the old O boats made a bit of noise coming into Pompey harbour in the eighties, exhausting above water on the surface as they did. The modern Diesels and nukes make no noise at all as they slink into harbour.

I do not remember any noises coming from the Canadian Oberons running on the surface in and out of Halifax, FWIW.

Yes Oberon's were very quiet.........so quiet in fact one of our RAN Oberon's got close enough to periscope photograph the USS Enterprise in a war game off the north west of OZ many years ago O0
However, much to the displeasure of the US Navy >>:-( when the image was posted in a WA daily newspaper...as they had billions of US$ supposedly protecting & making the big E impenetrable...... :embarrassed:.........
As the wheel turns..... all appears to be forgiven :o.....our Minister for Defence at the time was Kim Beazley....who is still on a jolly as some sort of OZ ambassador to New York some 30 years later...........Derek

I reckon I have an idea that might work, and be loud enough to hear over the pond pretty clearly at a distance.
Got a couple of Mylar speakers and a small sound board kicking out 2X 10 watts.
I hope to use a load of sounds changing them with inputs to the board via a couple of micro switches so I can toggle them back and forth. Fingers crossed.

I spent a lot of time in the 70's taking young sailors
on adventure training on the RN sail training yachts
based in Haslar Marina.
On quiet Summer evenings you could hear surface
running P and O boats returning from a day's ,'War'
in the channel.The A boats also had an exhaust noise.
