Hi , The frames are cut out of 12mm ply, fairing the frames, my file saw a must but have to be careful with it. I actually framed her up in Dec last year, showing her with my previous build the "Wendy-J" that i proceeded with first, I did the names for both boats at the same time.

Some more of the build....She is sitting beside the finished "Wendy-J" same scale she was 52' and the "Charissa" 77'.
Start of her planking, used 3mm Obechi , I generally use Lime wood, but couldn't purchase any at 3mm at the time, i found the Obechi easy to use but a bit soft for my liking......

Glad you are enjoying it, these next photos are , the last stealer plank going in then the start of the ribs being installed, the first 4 frames I used 6 x 3mm  only had to steam half of those, the remainder of the ribs are of 6 x 2mm they all had to be steamed and let set before gluing them into position, then showing the fillers between the frames as I like to have the under deck area where the stanchion post sit , solid so no void areas when drilling and pegging the post in .
Found it easier to install a shelf for the deck beams to sit on. then view of the hollow heel section with the oil filler attached.

BB....I reckon you have a few of Santa's helpers to help you build  {-).......

Another superb build on the blocks [again]........keep us posted

Merry Christmas to you & all of our OZ neighbours......... Derek

PS....is this the real Charissa in real life?  %)

Hi Derekwarner, yep that's her, now a training vessel at Adelaide , but she spent most of her life Tuna fishing and fish trawling from Ulladulla, Puglisi  Family had her built and worked her for all those years.....

Hi Mark T, that's correct, they fit in nice and firm and glued ( that's how we fitted the studs when we built one of our trawlers yrs ago).
1....Both cabins before attaching the wave breaker.
2....Fitting the wave breaker upright studs into position.
3....Wave breaker studs fitted prior to the 1mm ply being fitted.
4....Fillers fitted between the tops of the up right studs before the capping attached.

Hi Peter thanks for that, I knew you weren't going to be at the lake yesterday, i took a punt on going over ,but with the weather, no one was there ( not to worry  {-) ).   Well next set of photos.
1...She has a raised (probably insulated) w-house top, so beamed the area prior to the 1mm ply skin.
2....Starting to lay the tapered strips around around the exhaust frame.
3....showing how the exhaust stack turned out ( 99 parts ).
4...Top of the cabin with the start of the 1mm ply skin.
5...Starting to make the pulling points etc for the mast and boom.

Title: Re: Australian Tuna Clipper "Charissa"
Post by: B.B on December 29, 2014, 12:50:51 am
Hi  Derekwarner , I used the black cardboard i used on the previous model for deck caulking seams, i glued (wood glue) 3 layers together then cut them into the width strips I needed and pre fitted them (very slowly bending them into the radius of the corners) into the shape of the window before glueing them in, then gave them couple coats of Estapol to seal them.
I did first attempt to cut strips out of plastic ice cream container lid, but wasn't sure how the plastic would hold in the long run ?...

2....Cutting out the mast stay straps.
3....Marking the water line around the hull.
4....Already had a coat of Estapol ( thinned with turps) applying the first coat of 2 coats of undercoat.
5....The top side of the hull also received 2 coats of undercoat.

Fantastic attention to detail - Its almost a shame to paint a hull that is so well constructed.  B.B how do you get such a smooth paint finish with a brush bearing in mind the heat that you are painting in?
Title: Re: Australian Tuna Clipper "Charissa"
Post by: B.B on January 02, 2015, 12:40:40 am
Hi Mark T,  I paint very quickly and bit of swearing ( if it doesn't go to plan  >:-o ), actually i did have more trouble with the glossing with this model than the others ,more area to paint and with the time of year with it's humidity (Northern QLD). Well some more of her.
1....The motor bracket and removable base.
2...The underside of the motor base, locks in nice and tightly into position (doesn't need screwing in , but it will).
3...Top of w-house with it's radar stand, radio directional finder, G.P.S and aerial frames.
4...My little cubby hole for items after painting them, so much dust in the shed.
 5...Bits n pieces after being painted .
6...Painting the 2nd coat of gloss on the inside of the bullwarks.

The only trouble Peter is you tend to find more stuff to put in them . Some more of the build.
1...Model with the top sides with 2 coats of white undercoat and the 1 st coat of anti fouling.
2...Battery and ballast box which sits just forward of it's position there down below.
3...Engine room set up with electrics installed. With the coating inside the hull, this time I used 2 pot Estapol ( 3 coats ), Bob Standen used it in his  model he is building at present, looked good so decided to try it instead of the resin I generally use, the only thing I found was when you have any thickness build up as in the bilge area's, it can form air bubbles, so after it had well and truly hardened i dug out those viod area's and after testing to make sure no reaction between them I poured resin into the bilge sections ( as I generally do ) as you can see in the photo.
4...Hull and mast ,rigging the mast and boom.
5...Fitting the mast stay straps to the bulwarks.
6...Painting the mast stay ladders .
Title: Re: Australian Tuna Clipper "Charissa"

Hi there some more of the build.
1....Ready to spray the 2nd or was it the 3rd gloss coat ? had so much trouble with particular brand of paint, I have always brushed the gloss enamel ,but being larger area and the higher humidity I decided to spray ( I thought why not ,I now know why not  >:-o ) I would normally go for Dulux but couldn't get the gloss finish in the Dulux so settled on British Paint gloss enamel  1st and last time. Even after a few days letting the coat harden ( well so I thought) if used bit of turps to say wipe a smidgen of paint off it would smear the gloss off it  <*< , even when taping over it to paint beside it ,it also took the gloss off with the tape ( never had that problem before).
2...Showing the model before painting the Royal blue  dog leg around the waterline.
3...all the mast stays to their correct lengths.
4...Mast, boom  pre fitted to the hull.
 5...With the model.
6...I installed a 12 V computer fan ,running it on a 9 V battery (running time bit over an hour) just to push a bit of air through the hull, I have one of the hatches on the deck with a slide out section , you can feel the air exiting quite well through it.

Hi There, some more photos.
1-2-3....Making use of something useless, found some of these left on board by certain members of the crew, as being Brass never throw any thing  brass, copper, gunmetal or s.steel away never know when you can find a use for it, now they are an Air Vent  not a Smoke vent  ok2 .
4....Cleaning up the solder after soldering the back ladders on.

5....View of the front and deckhouse.
6...Model prior to her ballast test.

Post by: B.B on January 09, 2015, 03:05:45 am
Thank you  bassplayer1.   Float Day.
1 & 2....First time she gets her bottom wet, the hull weighs in at 15 kg, as you can see she needs a bit of ballast.
 3.... Stern quarter view
4 & 5....At this stage she has 10 kg of ballast in her , then had to put another 10 kg to push her down another 10mm ( 7/16" ), probably closer to say 22 kg if you want to sit it just below the bootleg.
6... Used 205 tubes of super glue ( 20 missing from the photo) plus some Areldite....
At this stage still had remainder of depth markers and her name to attach....

Thanks Mark  T ,  I had the main Name re sized so bit of a slow up over the Christmas break.
1.... Name on the wave breaker and across the stern, ready to coat it with the clear Laquer.
2... Lucky i sprayed the depth markers first ( or maybe not) and not the names, as you can see what it did to the paint that i already had problems with,,,did I cry ? Nope but came close to it >>:-( <*< <:( , so had to take depth markers off lightly sand back and recoat the white and red ( with the paint that i wouldn't even use on the dunny door ) and also repaint the blue boot leg, so while doing this over 4 or 5 days decided to start making the fish trawl gantries ,as she worked on the Tuna then in the off season she would do Fish trawling....so will post those next time....

Thanks guys glad you are enjoying the build.  Some photos of the Trawl gantries for the model.
1 & 2...I didn't have any flat copper sheeting in the thickness i required so sliced a 1/2" copper tube (done a few of them so far) and flatten.
3....Cutting and shaping the 1/2" & 3/8" copper tubing for the goal post and braces, will solder together, I want it strong enough to probably tow a set of gear from ?
 4...Main gantry frame in position.
5....Ready to solder the strengtheners at the base of the Goal post legs.
6...The gussets ready to be inserted and soldered for the trawl arms to pivot from.
Title: Re: Australian Tuna Clipper "Charissa"
Post by: B.B on January 16, 2015, 03:08:03 am
Hi there, next lot of trawl gantry  photos.
1 & 2....Prior to soldering the short trawl arms 1/4" copper , then after soldered  before the pivots being slotted and soldered into the ends of the tubing.
3.... The 1/4" bar that the trawl blocks hang from .
4 ,5 & 6....The trawl gantries finished , the bottom section of the goal post from the rope cleat solid then steps down to 1/4"  for 3/4" through the timber base and into wooden blocks under the deck ,just for extra strength.
7...Coat of red oxide ( will be sprayed with black), it has 58 parts and weighs 520 grams, now to start on the trawl and net winches....

  Hi,
That's one seriously impressive boat! the quality of workmanship is superb, being a chippy I like the scarf joint on the hull planking very neat. I sympathise with you over the paint on the bow depth numbers I had a similar problem with a trawler I built but with lacquer, thankfully I had only sprayed a very small area but still had to repaint the whole of the hull (felt like screaming at the time). Great work keep the pics coming.
     Cheers,
           Faz. :-))

Title: Re: Australian Tuna Clipper "Charissa"
Post by: B.B on January 26, 2015, 12:21:57 am
Hi Derekwarner ,I'm afraid I am not smart enough to store it all in my head , scratch it down on the pad ,least you can come back to it later and some times hopefully improve on it. Well some more of the fish trawling gear for her...
1-2....making the Main winch drums & Net drum  out of 1 mm ply and copper bands for the strengtheners.
3-4...cutting out the outrigger bearings (for the winches) and all cleaned up.
5-6....The Main winch & net drum finished ,Estapoled and then primed  ,and the gantries with first coat of its finished colour .

Hi, some more with the gear attached.
1....Testing her propulsion (still needs more ballast to get her tail down)
 2...As a Tuna Boat.
Remainder of photos with her fish trawling gear, in these photos she had 17.5 kg of lead ballast , still needs  3 to 4 Kg to sit her down closer to the water line.
In the next week or so will be giving her a test in the local creek, thanks for viewing.........

Interesting BB...so being an old fisherman  O0 ....do you have a 10 kg fish scale.....just hook it up & let us understand the FWD thrust Charissa can provide on a fully charged battery

We could have a guessing competition   {-)
My guess is between 6 & 7 kg  .....

Sorry guys forgot to take the scales for her bollard test at her creek trials yesterday, bad enough carrying all the lead ballast. Well we tested her out yesterday morning in the local creek up here (picture perfect , not many marsh flies to contend with). Bob ( Old Shrimper) gave her the first test driving her while i took the photos , we were surprise how well she performed  using a 7.4 v Lipo battery , spinning a 100mm propeller, all up had to put 21.4 Kg of lead ballast in her.

Hi Brian, and the rest of you guys in FNQ.

Just been looking on the radar and you are already coping the wind and rain.

Don't recall what is there now as a safe haven but the old Cooktown, Bank of New South Wales Building, AKA Westpac Bank, has a decent strong room that should withstand any cyclone.

Good luck to you all during the night. :-)) :-)) :-))

Hi guys , here are some photos of trawling with the "Charissa" a week after trialing the "Meili-Lady" at Ballina  Old Shrimper ( Bob) drove her around while I took photos and video , used the trolley this time as put my back out lifting the "Meili-Lady" ( 61 Lbs)  and the "Charissa" bit heavier at 72 Lbs ,another nice morning ,water wasn't as clear for the underwater shots (Tide was on the run out so bit murkier, than the other day with the making tide)...cheers
