I trained and passed my ADI course parts 1 and 2 ( the driving exam ) nearly 20 years ago but could never go through with the final part, the teaching and exam RELATED TO  that area, as I was fresh out of teaching and having suffered an NB in teaching reluctantly threw it all away............but having spoken to a mate of mine only last week who is a senior Tester of both learners and ADI's in the north west, ( he used to be an ADI) he says the instruction has changed considerably over that period to now, and it will be changing again in March when the government reorganises the test, taking out certain tasks, and putting in newer ones like driving from point A to B using a portable GPS which the tester will rig in the learners car.........these changes will be relevant to todays modern driving tasks...............Blackpool and approximately 19  other centres around the country will pilot these new changes for the new test, and if successful, the rest of the 200+ centres around the country will adopt the changes, meaning that the ADI's will all have to embrace such changes.............more paper work and more stress and meddling by governments of the day..............and yet still no learner driving lessons for motorway traffic use.......................It's hard and stressful work being an ADI, more so at times than being a teacher, and I am using my old skills to accompany my daughter whilst she practices, but I don't think I could now even think about doing it full time. neil.

hi

I will not be doing this full time, now working part time so just after some extra income to help me and my family for the nice things in life.

Realise its not an easy job but in this day and age what job does not carry a bit of stress ?

If I pass great if I  fail well the earth will still turn and day will become night still  :-)

Training with a firm called smartdriving and if it anything its made me a much better , safer driver.

PS agree about motorway lessons, all you can really do at moment is make them aware about pass plus, most of new drivers I have talked to though still say paid enough not paying for more .

Madness really but thems the rules

Sorry to maybe take this thread a little off course here - but did I read you right Niel? That they are looking to introduce 'using a sat nav' into the test???

This cannot be real?  I know almost everyone does it, but surely the use on the test should be restricted to listening mode and not visual?

As a biker, I have enough worries about distractions for car drivers in the car - without them being taught how to use more!!!!

Try teaching the newbies how to drive the car safely and courteously first before throwing gimmicks at them... and definietley how to drive on a motorway.......... <*<

yes that's right carl.......the powers that be think it is more akin with the modern world..........also out will go reversing round a corner and the multi point turn and in will come such things as parking in a supermarket parking space, front in and reverse out............ %%

I'm a biker too, daily in and around Paris (things can get hairy especially on week end when you get the out of town/weekend drivers).

I think that teaching how to properly set up and use satnav is a good move. People will use those devices (either standalone units or their smartphone) so it is wiser to try and give them a few pointers as to where to install them and how to use them (as navigation aid, not some otherworldly voice to be obeyed at all cost).

Cars and driving habits change (although the basics like looking around you stay the same). Keeping our head deep in the sand won't help.

It's not an easy task to define the minimal skill set:
- too low and you get dumb*sses on the roads, obviously a safety threat
- too high and you end up rejecting way too many people and to some of them it might become acceptable to drive without a licence (*) which is obviously also going to be a problem

(*) over their first few years of service, about 10 years ago, speed cameras in France got tens of thousands of people to lose their licences (mostly speeding up to 15mph over the posted speed) because they were just passing speed traps a lot more often than before. The point-based licensing hadn't been updated and a string of minor speeding offenses - that were virtually unenforced before - would lead to a voided licence (ie: go back to driving school and start over). What happened next was a surprise to only the most naive: driving without a licence just skyrocketed. People have to go to work so even usually-law-abiding citizens felt they didn't have much choice.
Laws were changed so that minor speeding offenses aren't that penalizing anymore. And there's technology (Waze, Coyote ...) helping people.
