Title: HMS Endeavour's long boat

Starting my first plank on bulkhead model kit, Thought it would be interesting to do a build log to see people's advice and comments.
I will be posting as many photos as possible of course!

The keel and initial framework has been laid, decks added and skeleton formed

I'very now rounded out all the sharp edges, had to resort to a bit of whittling to sort out the bows but got there in the end!

I've decided to use a method that involves wet fitting the first layer of planks to the bulkheads and letting them dry into shape before glueing them in place

The first planks have been attached! By use of lots of clamps and nails at the bow and stern, should I leave the nails in once the glue has dried or take them out and make it easier to sand?

It's best not to leave the nails in as they will rust.  Do not fix them all the way in as it makes it easier to remove them.

I believe the nails are made of Brass Ken so that shouldn't be a problem, thanks though!

Not in the rust department, so that's OK.  It does leave the problem of the heads and sanding thereof. The circular edge of the nail will prove irritating in the smoothing department as a circular join will appear between dissimilar materials.

You may have extra work  'sinking' them and subsequent filling the holes.

Most model pins/nails are a bronze brew & complete with anti withdrawal serrations...just like the full size ones

I do agree with Ken....in that finishing can be difficult, however filing each nail head with a second/smooth cut file will remove the bronze head without removing timber

If marked out accurately  %)  can make a model planked hull a joy to behold when the planking & bronze pin diameter are covered by a varnish or the like  :-))................Derek

Welcome to Mayhem, Ben. I'll be following this build with interest. I'm assuming it's the long boat from James Cook's HMS Endeavour, which has a very special place in Australia's history.

Thanks Ken and Derek for the advice, I shall attempt to remove the nails later, some of which I pushed a bit too flush with the planks, but I can always file those ones down.
And yes it is Peter,  though I hate to admit that I chose it for its size and relative simplicity rather than its fascinating history!
