Title: Size of typical Windermere launch
Post by: kiwimodeller on January 27, 2015, 08:33:01 am
Greetings all, I am hoping for some information about the size of a typical full size Windermere steam launch. I have a launch based on a Sovereign Models hull called Lady Sarah and with cabins approximately copied from the Miranda plans. The hull is about 43" long but without knowing what length the original boat was it is difficult to work out what scale she is and therefore what figures to order to suit. Any help appreciated.

I surveyed 6 of the windermere boats many years ago as they were slipped for winter overhaul. Branksome was 54.5ft long and 10ft wide

Thanks John, if I remember correctly something that I read several years ago Branksome was one of the largest of the Windermere boats. Is this your reccollection? Thanks, Ian.

Yes , it was the largest.
I have just checked my survey notes on Branksome and see that the length was in fact 50ft and beam 9ft. Think the plans I measured before posting to you [ that are half the scale of my original drawings ]have not been reduced accurately

Thanks for your help, it seems that at 43" the hull might possibly be at 1:12 scale (43ft original) as a 1:16 scale would mean that the prototype would have to be 57ft and I have not found any mentioon of Windermere boats that big. I can borrow a 1:12 crewman to check against the doorways etc. Again, thanks for the help. Regards, Ian.

Branksome was biggest . Why not stick to standard ship model scales , 1/192 1/96 1/72  1/48 1/24

Osprey of 1902 was 45' long, 8' beam - Swallow of 1911 was 45' 6" long, 8' beam - Viper of 1907 was 42'6", 7' beam. Your thoughts of 1:12 scale would be in order with these steam launches.

With the proliferation of Doll house Iteams in 1/12 scale it is the ideal size for our live steam launches.

Gerald.

Hi - my brother was one of the apprentices who rebuilt Waterlily at Vosper Thornycroft.  My other brothers and sisters would like to get him a momento for his 60th birthday.  Can anyone help ?  Are there any small models available of this launch, or one very similar ??
Many thanks
