Title: Revell 1/72 Hermann Marwede
Post by: rsm on February 07, 2015, 07:00:13 pm
I picked up a Revell Hermann Marwede in 1/72 scale and thought I would have a go at converting it to radio control. I've used Raboesch brass props and 2mm propshafts, MFA 360 motors, Mtroniks esc and diesel engine sound unit and Planet radio gear. I also fitted a mini Raboesch bow thruster. The kit goes together well without too many problems.

I found a good picture of the original vessels propellers so I found some nice brass Raboesch ones that looked similar. I ditched the kit rudders and made my one from plastic card and brass rod, the rudder tubes are brass tube.

The power comes from a 7.2v AA pack from Component shop.

Have to make sure everything works ok as the rear deck is glued down.

I made a hole in the foredeck for access and another for the speaker. I used a small speaker from Maplin as the Mtronik supplied one was very heavy. I also made a speaker box under the deck.

The foredeck was glued down and the switch and receiver placed in a convenient position. I used some small neodymium magnets on the deck and superstructure to hold them together when sailing.

I marked the level of the anti-fouling paint, masked it off and sprayed it with Halfords spray cans. It was given a light rub down with 1200 wet and dry and sprayed with Vallejo satin varnish.

Lots of bit stuck together. Sub-assemblies left unglued to make painting easier. I haven't used any photo etch just the basic kit, so I drilled out lots of holes in the flight deck and companionway to make them look like mesh.

Everything placed together to see how it looks. Not bad!

I see that there are two rudders with two servos, for independent rudder control y/n
Two rudders not linked because of space limitations?????
Thank you

Because of the boat ramp it was impossible to link the rudders together, so the easiest solution was to have a servo for each rudder and link the servos with a y-lead to the receiver.

Right, as soon as you said boat ramp it all became clear, should have looked more closely at the other pics.
Looking good  :-)) :-))

Finally finished this off. Painted with Halfords "appliance white" paint and Tamiya and Revell acrylics. Final touch was some BECC flags. Just have to sail it now!

As 17-21 says, a very nice and neat build.
Does anyone reading this build have an Eduard main boat build etched set for this German lifeboat Hermann Marwede? I have the heliport etched upgrade [EDU53013] but just cannot get the main detail set for the ship and its tochter boot [daughter boat]. Its code number is EDU53014 and I know it's no longer produced, but someone might just have one languishing on a shelf or in a cupboard!! Please get in touch via a message and maybe we could do a deal - many thanks. There might just be another build coming along on this one, after the inspiration above.

Nice build!   :-))

I'm interested to see how this model performs on water.

I bought the kit (from Germany) but on examination, I didn't think there was going to be enough bouyancy left in the hull after fitting the running gear to correctly ballast it to make it stable - there's an awful lot of plastic structure way above the waterline.

I chickened out and sold the kit on.

I've seen a few YouTubes of this model but I'm not sure if they've had to add a keel - I don't ever fit them to my models as I prefer to keep the model as per original.

It should be OK without a keel, so long as everything is kept as low as possible, but some of us that build 1/12th scale lifeboats like to have some small ones for when we exhibit at shows and there is only a small indoor pool - even then, it's true, we have to let the waves from the previous demonstration calm down and level out! Only time will tell, but one of our esteemed members at MBA-Dover regularly builds very small plastic kits and motorises them and puts r/c in too. Two of us are also converting three of the Airfix 1/72nd Severn Class lifeboats.

Found these a while back on the Internet and thought they might be of some use to someone thinking of building this Revell model. The second one has a nice dramatic sky! There is also a great YouTube video of German Lifeboats in the Hamburg Harbour at their Water Festival - I'll try and find it again and post the 'thread'.

This is the video from YouTube, you need to go in to around the 26 minute mark when you will see 'Hermann Marwede' with a German Sea King rescue helicopter RV. There are other DGzRS lifeboats earlier.
