Anyone see the mistake on this photo?
-
Ah so, the old chinese amp thruster?
Jerry.
-
Sans one Thruster?
-
These impromptu quizzes don't last long around here do they {-)
-
Retractable Azimuthing?
-
Sorry Mcgherkin. The specs say two bow tunnel thrusters. The GA plans even show two tunnel thrusters, seems the chinese yard may have decided to save some cash {-)
-
So it's a bit of a HMS Ocean then!
-
The name as well as torpedo tubes?! :} {-)

:o :o :o Its there covered by a self sealing door O0 O0
or maybe only one but double signage so you would heed the message O0 O0 O0

it also has bilge keels.....tony

So what was the correct answer Brian ?
-
Guys..... >>:-( some may have been a little premature in assuming that a second [AFT] thruster :o was missing
From the sectional image posted [thanks Umi].......we see the conventional FWD thruster being indicated as powered by an electric motor
However just AFT of this we see a representation of a diesel engine through a gearbox to a thruster.....but it appears to be inclined downwards %%
More than meets the eye I would suspect...as this appears to be an Azimuth rotational thruster O0
Sceptics the lot of you......nothing wrong with Fried Rice...... :-)) ..........Derek
-
That's a retractable azipod Derek.
Ned
-
:-)) I think they ordered a super tanker :-))
-
1 x FPP retractable 13.5T thruster
Interestingly: Hospital: 1
-
How weird is that.
Umi's img looks to be exactly like mine but this one I have shows two tunnel thrusters...
-
Que dramatic music! :o
-
I've just checked all my downloaded plans, I have 3 sets of line drawing, two show it with the azimuth pod and one that I have been taking measurements from show it with the tunnel thruster. In all other aspects these plans are exactly the same!
-
Any dates on the plans Brian?
Ned
-
Sorry Ned, just back from the local bar and a warming brew!
All three plans I have carry the exact same info in the bottom right corner as per the image, so something is amiss.... owever I am not about to change my current build because of plans {-)
-
Guys...as I mentioned before.............
1. nothing wrong with Fried Rice...... :-)) ..........but the vessel is hardly pretty is she?...
2. warm beer in Spain >>:-(....don't they have electricity yet?........
Derek
-
:o :o :o
Isn't that what we modellers refer to as builders licence, so why not for the full scale model builder. %) %) %) O0 O0 O0
-
Am I being really dense :-X ............. Why would you need/want a retractable azipod?
-
I have never worked on such mechanical versions of black art machinery........if God wanted AZIPODS he would have given Noah one [or two] {-)
No sense in it being bashed about <*< by partially sunken containers
Could it be only extended [lowered] when being used as a 360 degree drive for continuous GPS function?...13.5 tonne thrust is not a small value.........
[ie., to keep the vessel on continuous station?].............Derek
-
I was also thinking along the lines of dynamic positioning Derek.
Ned

Almost certainly. You probably wouldn't risk leaving it down in general cruising (the extra drag would get expensive too) or use it in shallow water when docking, which will be why they have a tunnel thruster as well.

Reduces drag when you're not using it. It's only meant for low speed maneuvering and emergency propulsion so when the ship's plodding across the Atlantic or wherever it doesn't get used.
EDIT: Ah, we're onto two pages. Yes, DP also comes into it.
I've had the misfortune of working on one, although electric driven. The worst thing was everything having to go up and down a single ladder run, from the bottom of the boat to just above the waterline, as the compartment was watertight up to there in case someone ever knocked it off.

Ahhhh the fog clears and yes I wasbeing daft. Obvious when you think about it! :embarrassed:

I suspect she has a Rescue & Recovery role; what used to be known as a 'standby vessel'. (The GA appears to show rows of seats which would be a requirement for R&R.) If so, then she could spend long periods loitering when the continued use of the main engines would be inefficient. That's when the Aquamaster (if that's the make) azimuthing thruster comes into its own allowing the vessel to keep station with minimum fuel consumption and maximum efficiency. She may have DP or may not.
Similarly if waiting-off for backload over an extended period, the Master might well elect to save fuel by going to the azimuth only or, if needing a bit more oomph (technical term) while towing, the azimuth may supplement the main screws.

She may have DP or may not.
As a modern Anchor Handler I'd be amazed if she hasn't got some very sophisticated and accurate DP.

She may - she may not - the Ship's Particulars will confirm that. As an anchor handler it's not essential. However, if she spends a lot of time in the supply role, then she may well have DP for offshore, alongside, discharge and backload.

At least they are prepared and have a liferaft already inflated at the bow.
%%
-
Infatable liferaft
NAAAAA, they just need a long pole - they must have sold it to the mexicans and this is a picture of the party - its a pinyada (however you spell it)
