Title: Whirlwind Winch
Post by: Netleyned on February 21, 2015, 04:30:04 pm
I have a 6v Whirlwind Atlas in a Marblehead which has started to twitch
at each end of its travel.
I have had it out of the case with no sign of water ingress.
Thinking black wire on the lead  or something else?
Is there anyone still repairing these or shall I cut my losses
and get a new winch.
I like the winch and it is inline with the age of the yacht
Any ideas chaps?

No mate, not a power problem.
I have taken the winch out, opened it up to check for water ingress.
Dry as a bone.

a friend of mine says that if you take it to bits and spray the electrics inside with a contact cleaner.as the brushes can get dirty.....just a thought...a great winch....tony

That was in my mind Tony,
I I've got a few electro spray cleaners.
I shall have a go.

I was thinking it might be corrosion on a contact somewhere too.
I don't have a clue about the inner workings of a servo, but you mentioned 'at the end of travel' which are the least used/worn parts.

Could be muck on the pot track. The wiper will pick up minute traces of material from the track as it moves and shove it all up to one end or the other. Sooner or later it will interfere with the contact between the two. If you can get at the pot track then give it a good blast with contact cleaner and clean the dimple on the end of the wiper with a cotton bud doused in the same stuff.
Was it Dave Andrews who made these winches?

Yes Dave, it was Dave Andrews.
I cannot get into the pot as it is built like a brick outhouse O0
I have doused it in switch cleaner and run it end to end a dozen times
and it seems to be behaving a bit better.
It's a darn fine winch and I would like to keep it going if I can.
