Hi Guys not been on Mayhem for a while. We have been in Sydney and both islands of New Zealand taken lots of pictures of ships of all types while away will post them on my return home.

HI Guys just leaving our hotel in Manchester after a good nights sleep. Left Auckland on Tuesday at 3 15 pm arrivied at our hotel in Manchester at 8pm last night just under 24 hrs non stop pictures to follow next week take care.

Who did you fly with? It took us 38 hours from Manchester to Christchurch and 32 hours to return.

When we travelled to New Zealand we did a two day stopover at Singapore outbound and a one day stopover inbound which gave us the opportunity of a decent bed for a night's sleep.
Still a helluva long way by plane though and not an entirely pleasant experience but NZ was a fantastic destination which made it all worth it. I have never enjoyed driving so much and don't expect to again!

First leg outbound. Manchester to Dubai 7 hrs 2hrs in Dubai then 13 Hrs to Sydney. Five days in Sydney then on to Christchurch 2.5 hrs. Return leg left Auckland 18 00 arrived Brisbane 16 00 hrs left Brisbane 20 30 hrs arrived Dubai at 05 00 9 hr lay over in Dubai. Left Dubai at 14 35 arrived Manchester at 19 00. Total travel time excluding lay overs around 23 hrs flying time. New Zealand is a fantastic place to visit. We flew on the Airbus 380 and Boeing 777. During our stay in New Zealand we were about 7 200 miles from home I think we passed through 3/4 time zones. Airline was Emirates.

As mentioned earlier, NZ was the best driving experience I have ever had. Every time you went round a bend there was new view. Driving from Dunedin to Queenstown was so good I never wanted it to end! Definitely something to do before you die!
Driving over the Canadian Rockies was also unforgettable but I think NZ edged it.

Stan, you should have told us you were coming, we could have easily got you in to a lot of trouble and could even have involved some model boating! {-)

Just heading off that way. Three weeks in the Bilpin-Kurrajong area. Any model boating around there? Had hoped to get down to Melbourne and Whyalla to see friends, but it's such a big country, and we need to relax.
Emirates and Qantas with stopovers in Bangkok on the way out and Singapore returning. Qantas let you reserve seats on the upper decks of their A380s, the advantage being that there are rows of just two seats. Catch being that it's A$50 a pop.

I'm glad you enjoyed it Stan. As Colin said, New Zealand is a very beautiful country, especially the south island. One of my sisters and her husband lived there for over 10 years, and during that time my wife and I visited on four occasions - then they were inconsiderate enough to move back to Australia :o <:( {-) They lived near Geraldine, in South Canterbury, then moved to Landsdowne Valley, about 20 minutes from the centre of Christchurch. The two islands are very different, scenically, and the south island can be very cold in winter, but it is a spectacular part of the world. I once spoke to an Aucklander who told me that all there is in the south island is scenery :-) , and it's true. There are fewer people in the south island than there are in Auckland. The north island is also beautiful, but in a different way; the volcanic areas of Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe are awe inspiring.
From the perspective of a Britisher, it's a long way away, but the northern hemisphere is just as far away from us O0 and the long flight is, after all, simply a means to an end.

Couldn't agree more Peter. NZ South island has mind blowing scenery, never seen anything like it. But the North island also has a huge amount to offer with gentler but really attractive scenery plus the volcanic areas are just amazing. Our trip was unforgettable, nothing comes close.

We enjoyed both south and north islands. The maritime museum in Sydney for me was just the icing on the cake. and the bridge climb is a must if you ever visit Sydney. My internal clock is now getting back to normal still waking around 4am and feeling tired early evening.

Hi Sydney Maritime museum is great as is the one at Perth, puts our one in London to shame.
The bridge climb was heavily booked when I was there but my knees might not have been up to it.
However I did helm my son's sailing yacht under the Sydney Harbour bridge, on the way back the "Police" waterborne came along side to suggest it was time to put our lights on. Very polite as well.
Swimming on the Great Barrier Reef was also one of those boxes you have just got to tick.
I have since snorkelled in the Andaman Sea and that was impressive as well.

HI Guys just got some of my pictures back and I hope to post some every day. First group show some of the vessels moored in Darling harbour. A daring Class destroyer HMAS Vampire and I think an Oberon class submarine HMAS Onslow. Thirsty work all this walking about so before we started a spot of lunch was needed, more to follow.

Great shots Stan. I always go to the Maritime Museum whenever I visit Sydney, it's a wonderful place to visit, in a great part of Sydney.

Great photos of Voyager Stan - last time I saw her we were working together off Malaysia in
the Indonesian Confrontation when I was on HMS Aisne. She looks really smart for her age

The photos are of HMAS Vampire, a Daring class destroyer, and sister ship of HMAS Voyager, which was sunk in a collision with the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne. The accident happened on 10th February 1964, and 82 of Voyager's crew lost their lives. There were three ships in the class for the Royal Australian Navy, the other one being HMAS Vendetta.

Hi Guys just a few shots taken from one of the towers on the Sydney side of the bridge. Cruise ship is moored in the central quay area. One shot of the bridge climb up the right side down the left.

Looks like maintenance platforms that can be lowered and traversed
as needed for painting and such.

Spot on it is used for work on the bridge It can be lowered to I think right down to road level. Also it is used for fitting the fireworks on the bridge for new year and other events.

A few more A large cruise ship in Sydney Harbour. Harbour ferry. Road looking from bridge tower going into Sydney. All this dashing about up the bridge down the bridge climbing towers calls for long cool beer happy days.

I don't wish to hijack your thread, but I thought you may be interested in some photos I took way back in 1963, when the Opera House was being built. Sydney has changed greatly in the last 50 years, but I suppose that's true of just about anywhere. I took the photos from the top of the south eastern bridge pylon, long before the days of the Bridge Walk. The pylon was open to the public for viewing, but that stopped many years ago, probably due to Health and Safety concerns {:-{ Sydney Harbour is no longer a "working" harbour, as most cargo vessels now berth at Port Botany where the container terminals are located, but scores of cruise liners visit each year, no doubt bring plenty of tourist dollars with them :-)
I've really enjoyed your shots of my old home town, and I hope you find my photos interesting.

One thing that hasn't changed is the AMP building, which was the first tall building at Circular Quay.
Was scary working on that building back in those days, one hand used to hold on, with and the for work, wind whistling through the steel beams etc, gave you an idea of the dramas they faced in building the Bridge, no WH&S to worry about %% %% %%
