Few pictures of the start of my Svitzer M Class, no name yet. I believe this hull was moulded by Tyne Models.
-
:-)) nice one Andy! Looks great so far.
-
That's a great looking hull,Keep pictures coming Andy.
Did chipchase Brian have one.
regards John B
-
Chip chase made the original mould, don't know if he built his on the original plug or a grip hull, very very nice model his is, I dont think mine will be to that standard, the winches are a problem for me, his were superb. I have almost finished the deck house, only the roof to add now, but am away from home for three weeks so at a stand still. I have looked at harbour models winch, they do a working one and a non working which looks the same without the motor, but they are not really like the originals. I have had a look at MMM ones and trying to adapt two to make a winch but I don't think they are suitable, though worth importing I guess.
-
That,s what i did got the Portgarth winch and Modified it :-))
-
If you can scratch build something, then have a look on the site below

Any chance of a photo?

I'll have a look at that. Don't have a lathe so it would have to be made from easily sourced stuff.

I've heard of that before.
-
Andy, it's actually easier than you think (I'm a complete plank when it comes to these things by the way) ... I'm sure someone will post a pic soon for you but all you need is either the electric screw driver modification, or make up a 30rpm (for example) winch below the deck, feed your rope up through a brass tube and over the top of the winch on deck, and hey presto you have a realistic (ish) winch.
Hope this helps mate
-
This is my one part MMM part bits and pieces, the drill is mounted under the deck.
-
That's impressive, nicely done, will get on to Brian and order one of those, what did you use on the aft deck?
Nicely built model, great detail on the bulwark frames. Did you fabricate the anchor chain stoppers or buy ready made?
-
I made them .do you mean the colour or the material on the deck.
The colour is Halfords red oxide with satin lacquer. the decks are all fiberglass.

Update photos.
-
Looks great Andy, coming along now!
-
Looking good Andy.
-
Little update, not got on very well, been away at sea too much, only getting the odd evening home. Have tried a different way of building on this one, sprayed hull before fitting bulwark frames, so I get a neater edge between the deck and bulwarks. Going to try making the frames and painting and fitting after. Sounds hard but maybe it will work out ok.
-
Looking good mate :-))
-
I shall be watching this build as I am building the Svitzer Marken. :-)) :-)) Looking good mate.
Regards Dave.
-
Progress is a bit slow at the moment, can't get time home wioth work. Vesselin Dry dock now for three weeks, so all at a stand still. Will keep posting as progress is made. I now have the winch parts from Mobile Marine models, winches won't be exact to scale, but hopefully will look the part.
-
Hi mate, are you building from plans, if so is there any chance you could scan the mast and send it to me.
Regards Dave.
-
Hi Dave,
Will be home at the weekend, will try to remember, you can email me as a reminder. The Svitzer Maltby is at Pembroke dock near to where we are on the slip. Havent had a chance to chat my way on board yet, will try before we leave Pembroke.
Regards Andy

-
Hi Andy, thanks mate have you done anymore on your build. :-))
Regards Dave.
-
No, not been home again, the wheelhouse is done upto top of main windows, will have to spray it next and fit windows and interior.
-
Looks like good work to me.
-
Photo update, one funnel, having a break from awkward wheelhouse windows.
-
Looking good Andy :-)) keep pictures coming O0 .

-
Hi Andy, how thick is the styrene you are building the wheelhouse from.
Regards Dave.
-
Hi Dave,
The lower wheelhouse or accommodation block is 2.1mm, and the wheelhouse itself is 1.8mm. I think this will give quite a scal appearance to the depth of the window frames.
I got the styrene from a local company who make industrial tanks from styrene, I'm not worried about weight with this model, after fitting the motors, the hull requires about 11kg of ballast to get her down to her marks. Because the hull is so deep, stability is not a problem, so long as the batteries and ballast are fitted low down.
I have now built second funnel.
Regards Andy
-
Hi Andy, I was thinking of 2mm for the wheelhouse but was a bit unsure if it would be stiff enough to hold its shape. But having looked at your photos of the wheelhouse built from 1.8mm and yours looks fine so I should be ok with what I have, keep up the good work as your build looks great.
Regards Dave.
-
Hi Dave, yes I found the 2 mm a bit too bulky and difficult to work with for the wheelhouse itself, funnily enough I was looking at the real boat in Milford and thinking about the mast, after all it is only supported by the thin side frames of the windows.
I haven't started the top windows yet, (been putting them off because of the fiddly aspect), but I will probably put two cross struts in of 2mm just under the mast going side to side just for extra support, nobody will see them unless they get on hands and knees. They will be as deep as the slope on the top reverse windows. This will also help the wheelhouse keep its shape.
I have been using the plumbers solvent, the type they use for cementing plastic waste pipes together, i find it easier to use and stronger than the watery stuff which evaporates in 2 seconds, and a lot cheaper.

Good morning Andy
I have just bought a hull for a svitzer m class tug
Do you have any close up photos of them

Hi Andy, I don't think there will be a problem with supporting the mast once the windows are fixed in place the wheelhouse should be quite strong. As for the plumbers solvent I had not thought to use it......but will now...as for the top windows have a go at making them out of card first that's what I do, Keep up the good work mate.
Regards Dave.
-
Yes, I make cardboard patterns first. My deck house is strong enough for me to stand on and I am tall and 17 stone.
I have stuck plans together using my plan as template, some have a very narrow bit of detail missing between sheets, but nothing important is missing. Will post tomorrow.
Regards Andy

Hi Martin,
Unfortunately I never got to arrange to get on board Maltby when I was on the slip at Pembroke Dock three weeks ago, no time!!!. There are some nice photos on chipchase thread here.

No, been away at sea again, really slowing down now.

Hello,
Fantastic job your doing, what scale is she.
Cheers

She is 1/32 scale, a nice handy size. Fits in the back of my car great.

For the third time!!, don't think this site likes Apple Macs, trying to post updates unsuccessfully.
Anyway been doing a bit more lately, wheelhouse ready for internal fit out, winches coming along and thinking of funnel vents. If photos don't post this time will try later on a PC.

Thanks for comments. The wheelhouse isn't fitted yet, just resting on top for photo and have to fit horizontal bars.
-
Bit more work today, finished large windows glazing, started cutting frames for bulwarks, not looking forward to that job, but once a template was made got on quite well.
-
Getting on well, just about finished all bulwark frames. Last batch sprayed ready to fit. and fairleads all fitted.
-
Coming on great Andy, looks great keep it going mate. :-))
Regards Dave.

Have been moving on this again, wheelhouse nearly finished, towing posts and one wink fitted, accommodation block sprayed, wheelhouse fitted so it can't slide off! :-)) . Will post pics in next few days.
