It's been a while since I completed a sub build, but here's X9 ready for painting. I hope to get the first coat of paint done today, depending on what time the good lady will be arriving.
-
Is Looking Great :-)) ,
Looking forward to see it in water O0 ,
MARIUS
-
Thanks Marius...I want to get it finished ready for the Norwich Sub Weekend in July.
-
Good Luck and Don't forget about the pictures . :-))

Hi Rich
She looks surperb :-))
At least you've got a good day for painting, its gorgeous outside today.
-
That's a tidy looking thing, looking forward to seeing it change colour :-))
-
So was I...went down the shop to get paint, common or garden silk black...none in stock. >>:-( Stopped off in the local garage on the way back...none in stock. >>:-( Someone somewhere locally must be building a big sub... <*<
-
Flat black and give it a bit if a buff up..you never know, a genie might pop out!
-
I tempted to brush paint it...having studied X24 closely at Gosport, that looks as though it was painted by a drunken man with a yard broom, so at least I could claim it's a scale paint job... ;D
-
Have you seen it since it's been restored.
All you need is a can of satin black from Halfords.
-
Is this in case George sinks his Tug and needs locating?.
-
Problem solved, thanks to Ian(IanPAL), the correct paint will be arriving tomorrow. Two cans of Halfords finest satin black aerosol...

I haven't seen X24 since we did the Gosport show, Andy...she was still outside then. Having said that, I have managed to persuade the good lady that she'd enjoy a day trip to Gosport. A day spent poking about in the museum, and the promise of a posh nosh and a night in a hotel seemed to work wonders on her...
Picture below shows X22 on the dive plane of X24.
-
You can easily lose three or four days in Portsmouth, plenty to see and do and lots of nice places to east out.
The submarine museum is also much improved on how it was years ago.
-
Gawd, I hope she doesn't read that, Andy...it'll end up costing me a fortune! <:(
-
Rich, I know if she reads this, you simply, accidentally, hit return before typing "but she is worth it".
-
Hi Tom,
Yes, she's worth it...this one is a keeper. ;D
Best wishes to you and yours...
-
Yes, I noticed that yesterday when I walked into your flat Rich, all the little touches that only a woman would add. Little things like cushions on the sofa {-)
I'm expecting proper ashtrays when I come down next, no more coffee jar lids :P
-
And get off here and get spraying that X Craft, before she comes over later and has your b*lls for earings mate. :o
-
You're too perishin' fussy...proper ash trays? Good grief, man...
Yup, just plucking up the courage to start spraying it, mate...need another coffee and a smoke first. :embarrassed:
-
Spraying has commenced...think I sprayed the camera lens on my phone as well. :embarrassed:
-
Two coats of satin black later and she looks a right heap of junk...just how I wanted it to look. Couple more little bits to do, then some weathering, rusting, etc, then she's off to the fitting out dock as soon as the radio box arrives from Adam at Mountfleet Models.
-
Very nice...get the rust coloured paint out...don't get carried away...and don't forget to get it wet at some time :}
-
Cheers Skip...I'll be weathering her this week. Hope to have her fully operational for the Norwich weekend, with a bit of luck and a following wind.
-
Hi Rich
I see you have been building what is the size of it as it seems to looks quite small, looks like some think i could move about with out to much trouble. I have been on doing that Engal Gato that the missis got me but have been doing a lot of modes to it, hope you are keeping well.
Sub John
-
Hello John,
Hope you're getting better, mate...yes, the X craft is an ideal size for me nowadays...41" long and weighs in about eight pounds. No more big boats for me, I'm afraid.
Nice to see you're still with us mate...you coming to Norwich this year?
-
Norwich! Get it ready for mayhem. Ian needs to blow things up!!!!@
-
I'll have the Akula for Mayhem, with operating torpedoes... ;D
-
I'll have the Akula for Mayhem, with operating torpedoes... ;D
That is of course as long as you don't drop it while getting it to the car ok2 :P
-
Shush now...don't be tempting fate %)
-
HI Rich
The sub at 41inc is a nice size to get on the back seat of the car and plus if it only weights 8lbs it's not going to be to much of a problem for you to pick up. I don't know if i have done the right think in getting this Engal Gato after having this op but saying that I'm doing around 5 miles plus a day on my mountain bike and yesterday i dug the garden, so it just goes to show what a bit of time can do recovering. I have been thinking about taking the big sub to bits as i think it will be to much for me to pull about now but Pauline says NO but we will see what happens I'm sick of it being in the way in the garage it takes up to much room. The Engal sub looks like a bit dropped off it sat at the side of the big sub
All the best Sub John

Having looked closely at the 'scopes on X9, I decided that I wasn't happy with the night 'scope, so off it came and I've made a whole new one, much closer to scale.
In the process of doing so, I managed to knock over a bottle of cyano over the deck, which rapidly removed the paint...now it looks even more battered and worn about than it was. Oh well...I put it down to a green crew and berthing damage.
The good news is that Ron Perrott is building me a module for the boat...proper job.
-
The Cyano damage could be hidden with some careful weathering
-
It has been already, E2V...paint is drying as we speak.
-
Thanks to my old mate Andy (tattooed) a large portion of lead sheet arrived, and has now been cut roughly to size and placed into the hull of X9. The module will sit on top of the lead, same as it does in the Sheerline boats, and will leave the keel open to allow water to flood in.
Once the module is fitted and the boat is trimmed/ballasted properly, then the lead can be bonded into the hull.
-
with the cyano damage I would have weathered it into the deck.
and as for the lead......another church with water damage will be reported!
See you at Mayhem I Richard!!
-
Cyano damage is now sorted, I plated over it and shall say it's a recently repaired piece of accident damage.
And no, the lead didn't come from a church...in fact, no chapel, church, cathedral, monastery, or any religious building was harmed during the ballasting of X9. %)
