Title: newbe - building the HMS Exeter (1939)
Post by: diesel-chick on April 13, 2015, 08:20:41 pm
Hi I'm Tina, from Burntwood South Staffs. just starting out in building model boats. main hobby is rc cars and just thought it would make a change to get into boats
I've took on the mammoth task of scratch building the HMS Exeter (1939). brought the plans of e-bay, though they don't have much detail other than ribs, side view, plan view, crain, catapults, lower deck bridge and various other details. no mention of scale but it's 49" long. the material I'm using is balsa wood being easy to cut, sand ect.

Hi Tina

The scale is 1/140th you may want to scan the plans and re-print them at a more common scale so you can buy the bits. Maybe 1/144th (just under 48")?

Hi Tina.

This sounds like a brilliant project and look forward to seeing some pictures of progress.

Balsa can be bought in three grades with medium giving you the best balance between strength and ease of cuting/sanding etc.

It is not as strong as Ply but with a layer pr two of GRP, it can be very resiliant. I suppose if depends on how you are planning to build the hull.

Wow looking good sure you've not done this before?   :-))
Shouldn't worry about the scale I'm sure 1/144th fittings will look absolutely fine.

Welcome Tina. You have the most important parts of your build already -- enthusiasm and some knowledge of modelling. rc cars/ airfix all give a good grounding on fiddling with parts to make them fit, you'll get along fine.
